I was thinking of buying Splinter Cell; double agent, but then i read that a video card with shader model 3.0 was required. My current card is a Msi FX5900ZT, VTD 128, and i understand that this has the shader model 2.0 ...
I got scared when i thought about the following:
Is there any possibilities that SHIV would require a card with the 3.0 shader model, or would it still be playable on my card? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Do i have to buy a new card....?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I do not believe a new card is required for SH4. I understand it to be the same engine that runs SH3.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Double Agent needs a model 3. card? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif Oh no. Guess I'm going shopping then. AT least then I'll be covered for SH4.

Question - at what point did shader model 3 come into GFX Cards? someone here will know...<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Well, I'm guessing Seth you're like most of us who haven't upgraded yet, and are on a motherboard with an AGP socket for the GFX card. I used to have a GeForce 5700LE, then moved up to the 6600GT and was amazed at how much better my framerates ran, and I had more range to tweak resolution etc. So, just my opinion, (I don't know where you are, but in Sterling ??) you can get a 7600GS, even better than the 6600GT series ans still in AGP format for about ??100 - a bargain = todays 'latest' technology, but with yesterdays motherboard socket format and it will have shader model 3 and 256mb of memory. Dang! I'm even tempted to get one myself! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Thanx mate! I live in norway, so the prices here would be around the same price (1100-1400 Nkr). that is actually a good bargain. does the 7600GS have the 3.0 shader?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

KaleunSeth,

I would say there is little choice. Being with an AGP slot, the most powerfull replcaement is the Nvidia 7800GS card (~$250).
Can your CPU feed properly that video card crunching power? It would not make sense to spend on such a product without taking full advantage of its ability. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/typing.gif
edit:The same applies to a 7600GS and it has shader v3<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

That's a good point Minoos. I have an AMD 64 3000 754skt, which I know is pretty outdated now. Best I could go for on my ASUS K8V SE 754 skt Deluxe mobo 'I think' is a AMD 64 3800?

Would my current 64 3000 be enough to enjoy that 7600GS at it's best would you say? I'm really tempted by it, as I agree with AGP now your options are limited, but it'd give me a couple more years on my existing rig I'm thinking (even if, worst case, I had to upgrade that 64 3000 if that's what you'd recommend)A lot cheaper than a new mobo, be it AM2 or skt 939, a new GFX card and CPU.

I'd appreciate your thoughts!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Thanx alot, mate! I'll look into this!

My specs:

AMD Athlon 64 processor
3200 ++
2.01 Ghz, 1.50 GB RAM
Video card: Msi FX5900ZT VTD 128

I dont know if the CPU could deliver the juice needed, though...<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

KaleunSeth,

Your spec can match the 7800GS. Don't expect to have wonders in SH4, it will be great but not the best.
The 7600GS would be a little short for splinter or SH4

RJ, my advice seems difficlut to follow.
I cannot find any ASROCK 939Dual from a UK vendor.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
