A very good read on the "road" to Rabaul!
The Solomans Islands, steping stones to Rabaul.
Why we need these maps....

TULUVU‚‚ā¨ôS AIR WAR by Richard L. Dunn ‚© 2003

On the "other" end of New Britain Island, near the the southwest tip, and two hops from New Guinea, the Japanese constructed the wet tropical mud Tuluvu airfield as an emergency airfield, and yet the author tells a fascinating story of how this one little airfield was in the center of the air war. In a way it makes sense for a forward airfield to be between the larger friendly and enemy air bases and so be near the major battles over the nearby contested sea transport lanes.

Always amazes me how these aircraft looked even when freshly captured. I kmow some may have been out of service, even then, for a year or so but look at the grass growing up around them as well as the paint.
