Did you see the rudder input on those Corsair take-offs?

P.S. Thanks for the link!

I uploaded that vid, I'm pretty sure I actually got the link off this very site a year or two ago!

I think it might be available for download from Patricks Aviation site as well.

Wow. That is excellent footage. What a terrifying thing to do, or even be around. You see how close the prop came to the camera on the Corsair that almost nosed over the side of the deck, right near the end?

fantastic insight into just how challenging carrier ops were.
they didn't seem to have to skim the water when taking off, like we do though http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Notice the Corsairs taking off with ease from starting points even with and FORWARD the tower. Oleg hasn't got the F4U right.

Negative! He has the Corsair and most planes right (within limits). What he has wrong is the weather. Those aircraft are taking off/landing into at least a 15-20 knot wind.

Do this. Create a mission. Make the carrier go faster than it can historicaly (by about 15-20 knots!) Try a takeoff into this simulated weather. Watch the planes leap into the air!

go to your Temporary Internet Files folder

for example : C:\Documents and Settings\Badsight\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

that video is in flash format - it isnt an mpeg or avi . you will need a Flash Player to view the file

Yeah, wind on the deck is not modelled in IL2. Escort carriers topped out around 17 knots, the big carriers could go faster, but they all turned into the wind, so over the deck wind speed would be in the neighborhood of 30 knots.

And yes, the Corsair needed right rudder trim (at all times) and the pilot had to keep his foot on the rudder during takeoff to prevent the aircraft from turning to the left.

Oh, and notice that even with hard landings, the real aircraft do not bounce like those in IL2.

Those landings with a sinle gear down must have been nerve wracking to say te least...luckily most of the pilots were only tossed around in their cockpits, they seemed fine, looking around assessing the mess they just made

Mine often end with no evidence that I or the plane I was flying ever existed.
