When I started flight sims about ten years ago, I didn't know much about airplanes period and I found that by learning everything I could about airplanes in general and combat airplanes in particular I could better understand how to use the various parts of the airplane to my advantage.

The great thing about Il2 is that its difficulty is scalable so that a new player such as yourself can turn off some of the options such as stalls and black outs to work on gunnery and tactics. As you get better you will wnat to start reintroducing these options which will give you another challenge and generaly make the game more fun.

Do a lot of QMB. Find a plane that you like to fly and just cruise around in it for a couple minutes to get the feel of the plane. Then add something to shoot at, make things easy on yourself at first to gain confidence than ratchet up the difficulty by making the enemies ACES instead of VETERANS or whatever.

I would also recommend finding a squadron. They can help train you online and give you pointers on tactics and flying in general.

Good tips here already but I'll just add some encouragement. Don't give up. I've flown real floatplanes in the past but have still found the IL-2 series to be a challenge. Always something new to learn. You'll find a lot of useful tips on this forum too .. believe it or not.

Try hitting the Sturmovik Essentials link in my sig. Visit some of the sites. Some of them are already mentioned.

Also, new simmers should start with an easy flying plane. Gladiator(J8A) or the Hurricane are two good places for new simmers to start with this sim. And, of course, there are a number of other planes. I-153, La 5 ect...

The only thing I can add to the links already provided here is the "Joysticks & FB" link under my signature picture.

I would say spend allot of time in Quik Mission Builder with full easy, but turn on stalls and spins.

Open the config, and look for a line called "Arcade" change it to Arcade=1.

Then have fun, man.! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Setting arcade=1 does two things:

When your bullets hit an aircraft, an arrow appears embedded in the aircraft to show the location and angle of the hit. If the bullet is an explosive cannon round, the path of the major fragments is also shown. Hits on other targets are shown as yellow dots. After about 30 seconds each hit arrow or dot will fade. This feature is a great help in analysing your shooting accuracy.

You get really cheesy comic strip style thought balloons showing what the crews of aircraft are thinking/saying when they get hit.
