Why horrible? What else should they do with it?

- can't fly due to operating hour limit reached
- can't be renovated because it would cost more than a new Airbus
- can't be put into a museum because it is not old enough
- can't be towed into the metal recycling plant because the door wouldn't be big enough
- can't be buried because it is too big for a landfill http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif
- can't leave it where it landed, because it takes too much space
- can't move it somewhere else due to environmental hazards
- can't be dismantled manually, because it would take lots of manhours.

So? This is part of the life-cycle of every aircraft manufactured. Only some of them can escape this fate becoming an exhibit/collector item.

There are a few companies that specialize in the use of salvage parts for building things other than aircraft. Last year on the TV there was a show about a custom furniture business that made stylish tables out of old wing and rudder sections.

I don't see any passenger seats in that photograph. I imagine they are often taken out and resold. There must be some sort of market for refurbished non-critical parts.

I would think a poor country's state-run airline could save some money buy purchasing an airliner without any seats and equipping it with newly upholstered seats from a scrapped jet.

In case of buying or renting a second-hand airplane, maybe. In case of a new airplane, the pricing and warranty strategy from the manufacturer will prohibit this, IMO.

The life of a passanger airliner often degrades to becoming a freighter, before finally retiring. In those cases, the seats are also removed. Could this be the case for this bird?

Theoreticaly a good idea, but...
Do we have enough trailer parks for all such birds, when huge piles of aircraft are rotting in the deserts already?
And how does this big 747 gets to a trailer park? On the road (trailer http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)? Disassembled? How much disssembly, transport and re-assembly cost?
When it get's there, who will maintain this big bird, meaning corrosion prevention, painting, tires etc.

And the final, decisive question: who will pay for all this? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
