Some of you know about my paternal grandfather. He was in the 5th Marine Division and fought on Iwo Jima. I wanted to do something very special for he and my grandmother this Christmas and give them something they have never had before. He never had a photo taken with my grandmother in uniform and never had a photo taken with all of his decorations. I thought that I would personalize it with his Purple Heart and the famous Flag Raising and I hope that they will be truly surprised when I present this to them tomorrow (Sunday the 23rd). I will post back here after I give this to them and let you all know what they thought of it.
I finished the portrait at the end of last month and finished cutting and staining the frame last week. The frame got 10 coats of polyurethane. I cut the glass and matting last week and then I put it all together. I apologize for the reflections in the glass in the photos. It is the best I could do with the lighting.

Yes, hand drawn. Using only a .7mm mechanical pencil, a blending pencil and a kneaded eraser. I am proud of how well the frame turned out as well. To get each angle to come out at EXACTLY 45 degrees takes a lot of work...even with a good miter saw. Even then I made a couple pieces of scrap before I got it right.

Excellent work... your spacial placing gives the drawing a nice unusual touch, although it's seems minimal, it fulls the whole canvas http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

It is obvious that a lot of thought and I would imagime a great deal of time went into making it, and it looks fantastic as a result. I bet your Grandfather will be chuffed to bits with it.
