Hi guys

Flew an excellent coop at the weekend, intercepting B24's raiding at low level (i think based on Poletski) (congrats to mission builder- excellent mis find at airwarfare.com)

anyhoo- me and pal took me110 with inevitable big gun armament of MK108S and MG151/20

the B24's just soaked up a sustained volley of fire- I was dumbfounded- clearly they were damaged but kept flying despite repeat attacks

really hard to cause significant structural damage

i would go as far a too say that after 2 years of FB flying they are the toughest planes ive tackled.

anyone else experience this?

true to life?

great mission- action packed

Yes! I was gonna start a thread asking the same question, just last week. I didn't go through with it cause it seems like there were too many posters pms'ing in a mass collective. I didn't want to be called a "whiner". http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

But hey, you are the sacrificial lamb so here I am. Yes, you are so right. I use them as target practise for that very reason. I believe the P-47 is its offspring. Those B-24's, whether realistic or not, can take a heck of a lot of punishment in the game. I'd like to add, they are my favorite bombers. Unlike that Hurricane Guinea pig, they put the turrent on the nose. I really wish we could fly them, I'd be the nose gunner rather than the nose picker. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

OK, flamers, dazza started it, not me. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

But I fully agree with him anyway. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

Dunno how it compares with the Ruskie Pe-8 as its been a long time since I have had a go at trying to down one of those in anything other than an FW. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

But the B-24 is definitely the toughest of the American heavies. (Modeled ingame that is)
I just completed VPMedia's RHAF campaign where you had to go up against both types fairly regularly in G-6's and later G-10's.
I too found them to be very sturdy and able to soak up plenty of 30mm nose-canon, and still continue to fly.
The B-17 in comparison tends to fall to pieces quite easily, especially the tail assembly and horizontal stabilisers.

Best method to drop them I found is to come straight down from above aiming for the outer wings/engines.

I€m currently uploading my latest campaign journal with plenty of screenies of damaged bombers, which you can compare the two. (Should be finished and ready to view in day or so)

hahaha! Yeah flame away- i have asbestos covered ignorance to protect me!

I read all the 'this plane is wrong because' or 'this is unrealistic' threads with interest- i love finding new stuff out- but personally i dont have a clue about relative performance of planes- i just love the game regardless.

i really enjoyed that coop tho- precisely because the B24's were so tough.

seemed more realistic to me- but then i have nothing to base that comment on.....

PE8 goes down far easier if i remember- but rear 20mm cannon is lethal!

I agree that they are tough, but they go down quite easily with some MK108's off an Fw190A8/9. MK103's are even better, but they do sloppy your plane down a bit. With MK103's you can do long range stand off attacks from dead 6 since the 103's have a longer range and straighter trajectory than the 108's. With 108's I like to get in the thick of things and just use slashing attacks. I dive on the formation, make a shot at one of the trailing bombers, then pull up and fire off a burst at one of the lead bombers as I'm zoom climbing. It's very difficult to get hit by defensive fire this way.

After I last posted in here I fired-up the game, 8 B-24's(empty) and unlimited ammo for me. Flying the K4, I used the MK108 and landing flaps. I would only fire at less that 300m.

These things are tough, as for the fuselage but the wings are sometimes weak. I did fire 2 diect shots into the engine without effect. The blast made the plane turn a little but it always straightened out and stayed on course.

One was really interesting. More than 30 rounds into the fuselage. I meesed up but hitting the rudder and to two remaining survivors bailed.

The B-24 is the toughest bomber I've seen in the game but a quick bust from the machine guns will set the engine on fire.

I did notice something I have been noticing more and more often. Oleg needs to work on the DM(surface). Shoot a plane once, a well placed hit at close range, then examine the damage on the plane. It's not consistant with where you hit. I shot the left outer engine with out doing any damage, but the right side of the fuselage was damaged. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Last time I shoot down a 323 was IL-2 before that first patch. Was great target practice and pretty easy to kill. I haven't tried since then.
