Gidday, 3 quick questions.

1. Could the A-20, Blenheim and B-25 make it from the UK to Northern Germany?
I read that the Blenheim bombed targets in Germany early in the war so I figure that's a safe bet.
In Heinz Knoke's account he mentions B26's and I think A-20's attacking convoys. However, his unit moved about a bit, from Northern Germany down to the Netherlands, so I'm not sure about this.

2. Did these guy bomb from around 5000m?

3. Did they use box-type formations, too? I would imagine they did.

Thanking you.

12th August 1941.

Blenheims of 2 Group were detailed for a daylight attack on two power stations in Cologne. The escort was provided by 66, 152, 234 and 263 Squadrons.

263 was the only Whirlwind squadron involved - supplying fourteen aircraft, flying out of Martlesham Heath. They turned for home approximately 4 miles north west of Antwerp and followed the course of the Scheldt at very low altitude - seeking targets of opportunity. They spotted and attacked some barges near Walcheren, sinking one and damaging two others. No losses. Three damaged.

Thanks LF. That was the one I had heard about. I'm looking more for info for late '42, or during '43.

Is the Whirlwind actually available now, or still in WIP Purgatory?

1. Yes they could. All types. It's not that far from England to Northern Germany.

2. Depended on the type of mission, the B-25 and A-20 were also used for low level attacks. Common altitudes were about 10000-15000ft, probably not much to choose between the three types.

3. I doubt it, but it depends again on the type of mission and also on the date these took place.

This place is spookily fast for a game that is so old.
Thanks JtD. That was the go-ahead I was looking for.
To the FMB!

It's so good that it's being considered for official adoption according to rumour. Archie Calvert is 'our man on the inside' - he'll have a much better idea than me as to what's going on, but long answer short, we're still waiting for God's aeroplane to make an appearance in Il-2.

As JtD noted, twin-engined bombers would have little trouble making Northern Germany. Lots of info on Whitleys (leafleting) and Hampdens (Dortmund/Ems canal), but little on Blenheims to hand - I'll dig around the library here and see what I can find relevant to your query.

Don't put yourself to any trouble, LF. It's just a quick mission or two for variety.
I'm using the A20-C right now actually as I think it rather dashing.

Which map are you using OP?Ive tried something similar on on of the mod maps (1:1 "Battle of France"?)The furthest I can get to is Munchen Gladbach which was hit by Bomber Command in the early/mid war years .Map is totally unpopulated with buildings though. Also most of the Bomber bases were further north than the section of England on this map...(although some of the Blenheim bases ARE on it...)

Hey ytareh,
Actually it's just Kurland standing in for Nth Germany. Geographical accuracy does not phase me.
The Allied Mediums are just going to be appearing in a few missions as targets for my 109 packs.
I could never do a realistic length mission like the one you described. That would take all my precious free time - two little girls really eat up your time. Out of interest, did you just run out of map, or was it fuel or something?
Thanks very much again for those books. As you said, even getting through a fraction of them is hard to do.
