I don't know why this is a black project but here you go:

(Text which came with this picture)

It has been secretly built by Skunkworks as a heavy-load carrier. To gain more span to act like a wing, the P-791 is three pressurized lobes joined together. It uses four air cushions as landing gear, located on the outer lobes. It appears to have four propellers-two at the tail and two on the sides. A hybrid airship derives most of its lift by lighter-than-air gas, the rest by its shape and span.

The thing is, why are they building it? Air planes out perform Airships in every respect expect keeping station above something. And then Helicopters are better unless your lifting something VERY heavy?

Maybe because it's a cheaper way of transporting things???
The running cost of helicopters is not exactly low cost...

Airships have a lot for them speaking, actually. Economics, for example, also the ability to carry heavy loads over huge distances and deliver them pinpoint. in military use, they are sitting ducks, but if the enemy anti aircraft capabilities are fought down properly I also see a lot of potential.

That aside, airships always fascinated me. =)<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Never discuss with stupid people.
They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I hope they bought the concept from the Brit who developed it some years ago ( I know he presented the concept to some US army brass in England yers ago )

Otherwice it looks like a total ripoff.

On that note, airships can carry way more load cheaper than any ac or helicopter..as long as they dont use helium, wich is extremly expensive. Thats how i understand it anyways.

Cheap(er) heavy lifting, maybe? Can be made to run on hydrogen cells, solar paneling etc.
My bet goes for: As a carrier for armed Predator drones. Like USS Akron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Akron_%28ZRS-4%29) updated http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Octobriana pulled her LA-7 up and away as another of the Rodinas' enemies fell screaming to his doom.&gt;&gt;

Blimps are used in several ways.

One thing was the skycrane. A Blimp can lift way more weight than a helicopter and offers a more stable and unproblematic platform, expecially for construction.

The downwind and turbulences caused by a helicopter can be extremely dangerous for the construction workers below. The picture above shows an even more stable platform, as the 2 bodies are more stable around the long axis. The same principle as a catamaran.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
