Thought I'd ask you guys as you'd give me the straight dope, and the darn @#$% search function is STILL broken. Not really able to afford big equipment outlays currently, I am going to save up for that monster rig for BoB. However I was looking at some deals on webcams and as I'd like one for chatting (folks live in Vancouver, Sis in New York) and sending pics I thought as I may get one anyway what about seeing if I could get some Track functions (and would get a "real" one next year with my big rig).

So any comments, experience with Freelook and 2Cam (or whatever it's called)? Looking at Logitech Quickcams btw. Don't need anything fancy as 6DOF doesn't work with PF anyway. Thanks.

cam2pan is something i got for $10 USD. it works okay w/ the game and works better for me in M$F$2004.

setup is pretty easy, but the instructions and details are not well explained. there is great customer support, and you can get in touch w/ the guy who wrote the program.

definitely worth considering if you want to save some cash. there is a demo that runs for 5 minutes that you can test out. the older version runs longer, but only works for something like 15 or 29 days. the newest version goes only 5 minutes, but you can exit game and click on- will register later- to continue flying. too annoying to use though.

i have not used trackIR due to cost, but i imagine cam2pan is not as good. check it out.

Freelook works reasonably well in the dark, having a bright LED attached to a head-band. Pros: smooth panning, minimal lag (30 fps)
Cons: regular de-centering and poor dead-zone handling (snaps to the middle when you don't move your head for long).
I have a tracking turn off/on button in the joy instead of bomb-release, so I can work around the problems quite easily with some practice.

An LED, with a battery you mean?? I can't play in daytime either?

Yes, exactly. A dark LED without battery is not very useful. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I use 2 AA-sized batteries, also attached to the headband, including a small switch. Flying 4 times a week for 2 hours on average, the batteries last for about 3-4 months.

I rarely have the chance to fly during daytime, but it is possible, provided that you play in front of a dark background. Light sources, and light reflections within the vision of the webcam will cause jumps and rough movements.
The equatation is: the stronger the LED light (must be "bright") => the lower camera signal gain => less background disturbance => smoother panning.

If the above scared you, don't even try to set it up, period.

But if are not scared so much, maybe I can post a track for you, where I use Freelook. So you can see what you may see as well.

Here is a 2.3 MB ntrk file (http://web.axelero.hu/rnzoli/quick0205.ntrk) that will completely give you the hang of it. I haven't asked your network connection, but I hope you can download it somehow somewhere. I chose a long track, so that you can get used to the different movement of view. When you play it, make sure leave the option "Manual View Control" off, so you see everything how I saw it.

NB. This is a mock dogfight with my friend, identical planes & loadout, wing smoke on, unlimited ammo, vulnerability off, everything else on. Don't let your attention be hijacked by the mistakes we do http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
