Purpose:
Determine the best mix of options for *my* optimal gaming experience. What it isn't is a "my rig is better than yours" discussion (I know I'd lose that one!). Simply some interesting info if you want to get a few more FPS out of your machine. As always, YMMV.

The computer:
> Shuttle SG51 micro
> P4 2.8 OC to 3.02
> ATI Radeon 9800 128 meg oc to 411.75/317.25 (324/290 stock)
> 1 gig (2 x 512) dual channel PC3200 memory
> Onboard audio.
> 19" Dell monitor (crt) at 100hz 1152x864 and lower, 85hz above
> WinXP SP2, all latest patches.

Game settings:
Open GL
Default ATI 9800 video card selection in il2setup.exe
32 channel sound/44100 sample rate, audio enhancements and hardware acceleration
All settings max/perfect landscape (except app overrides to "Excellent" landscape in 1600x1200)
MissionDistance=0
3dgunners=1
HighGore=1
NoSubTitles=1
NoChatter=1
NoHudLog=1
NoLensFlare=1
TypeClouds=1
Sky=2
Forest=1
LandShading=3
LandDetails=2
Water=0

Test methodology:
> Fraps set to capture exactly one minute and auto save to a file (no display during capture)
> Playback of "black death" track from start to 60 seconds in

Results:
2005-12-05 23:35:35 - il2fb
Frames: 4035 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 67.250 - Min: 39 - Max: 133 - 640x480x16
2005-12-05 23:01:34 - il2fb
Frames: 3030 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 50.500 - Min: 28 - Max: 84 - 640x480x32

2005-12-05 23:26:54 - il2fb
Frames: 3461 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 57.683 - Min: 33 - Max: 123 - 1152x864x16
2005-12-05 23:19:00 - il2fb
Frames: 2295 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 38.250 - Min: 27 - Max: 54 - 1152x864x32

2005-12-05 23:29:49 - il2fb
Frames: 2657 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 44.283 - Min: 30 - Max: 72 - 1600x1200x16
2005-12-05 22:58:06 - il2fb
Frames: 1369 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 22.817 - Min: 13 - Max: 33 - 1600x1200x32

Conclusion:
I used to use highest audio settings, and 1152x864x32 screen res. After testing, I found that I couldn't detect any real difference in using 16 bit color or default audio over the max settings. 1600x1200x16 with default audio worked best for me with a much better look and 6 more fps to boot (remaining game settings constant for all tests).

Backing down the audio settings should help for those who have on board audio since the CPU actually processes the sound. I don't think it has a big impact for those of us with sound cards since they relieve the CPU of this duty.

It was only 2 fps anyway, so the audio is pretty immaterial anyway. I had and Audigy2, but it was horrble/buggy and no better performance so I took it back. Mostly it was just surprising what a huge difference the color depth made to performance.
