<Rudeltaktik raises his bottle of Beck's to the forum, whilst the crew of U-52 cheer noisily in the background>

Fellow Kaleuns, Leutnant z See Rudeltaktik has the happy task of reporting a British C2 sunk off the cost of the Outer Hebrides.

What is remarkable about this insignificant contribution to the war effort compared to the work of the tonnage kings? Well, is that it is the first ship I have ever sunk with completely manual targeting http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And, by heck it feels good! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

<Rudeltaktik puts the bottle to his mouth and drinks deeply>

Ah well, better enjoy the beer and the celebrations whilst I can! FdU is gonna keelhaul me when he realises I used 6 eels on that tub! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blush.gif Maybe I'll improve next time!

Playing GW mod with manual targeting, no weapon officer assist. A whole different game than I played before!!

Congratulations! I converted to realistic manual targeting a week ago. I found that obtaining a correct target speed has been the most difficult part of the whole operation. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif It is frustrating, as I cannot manually select a speed. Make a mistake here and the torpedoes end up in the ocean. Even if you surprise yourself and hit the target, with realistic sinking, it takes ages for the target to show any effect. You can forget about hitting anything in rough seas. If that is what it was really like then it is a wonder that anything was hit.
Occasionally, I have used a different method of attack. When I could not determine the correct speed of the target I used a €˜shoot from the hip€ approach. Provided the target is under 1000m away and more-or-less abeam of my stationary submerged U-Boat, I found that it was better to turn OFF the Input switch in the Torpedo Data Computer. I then manually moved the Bearing indicator to an estimated point ahead of the target and fire.
If I realise that the target is a coastal or smaller ship, I try to get ahead of it undetected and lie in wait submerged and abeam of its route. When the ship is 1000m or so away, I quickly surface following the ships route and use the heavy deck gun to take out any weapons and hit the water line as it passes. I haven€t failed once and I save on expensive torpedoes. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif
