I stickied what was to be the last version of this in May of last year. For those who don't know - there is a NEW version! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

Since it's inception, I've never left port without it. SH3 Commander is a superb piece of modding. Simple to use, and greatly enhances your game play experience. Personally, I say it is an essential component. After a conversation with the good man himself tonight, I am pleased to post this at Ubi for everyone to enjoy. Jscones - Good to see you back! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

His own words:

Iambecomelife and Sailor Steve have managed to coerce me out of retirement for one more enhancement to SH3 Commander, which quickly turned into two, then three...

Anyway, here is SH3 Commander R3.2...

"The Complete Super Deluxe Thallium Commander's Special Ultimate Edition"

or "ComSupDelThalCommSpecUltEd" for short.

Key features:

* ONE INSTALL FILE including the complete SH3 Commander 3.2 plus the latest SH3 Patrol Log Editor plug-in. No more need to download three separate files!
* No more MIA officers! Simply open the Crew Manager and any displaced officers (like the one you always leave in the Repair compartment ) will automatically be found and returned snugly to where they belong.
* You can now dismiss or replace crewmen through the Crew Manager. It will cost you renown just like it does in SH3, but your replaced crew may come with previous experience. Just a warning though, don't annoy BdU too much.
* If you have the "Use real ship names" option selected you may notice a number of changes when you generate Personnel Files:
o details now exist of the cargo carried, crew onboard and crew lost for each ship sunk. This simulates data gathered from survivors, radio intercepts and post patrol briefings. Thanks to Sailor Steve, bigboywooly and iambecomelife for the data.
o better matching of a ship name to the ship class sunk. Sailor Steve has spent every waking minute mapping real merchant ship names to their corresponding ship classes. So now, for example, if you sink a C3 Cargo you will get a real C3 Cargo name rather than a name that may have belonged to a T2 Tanker.
* Personnel Files now display as intended in non-IE browsers.
* A tip screen that randomly displays over forty SH3 Commander usage tips. And by God you will read every one of them.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v642/antsmith/sh3cmdrgold.jpg
Example of a patrol log with cargo and crew details - in Mozilla Firefox! Other entries added via the SH3 Patrol Log Editor, now included in the SH3Cmdr package

Installation instructions:

1. Click here (my FileFront) or here (Wolfehunter's FileFront) or use SH3 Commander's "Updates" feature (these are the only "official" links).
2. Select a folder into which to save the installation file. Remember this folder!
3. Once downloaded, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder selected above.
4. Find the file called "SH3Cmdr32.exe" and double-click on it.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions and install SH3 Commander. If you are using MS Vista then pls pay particular attention to the Information screen!
6. Once installed, select "Start->All Programs->SH3 Commander->SH3 Commander User Guide" and at least skim through all 30 pages. It is imperative that you do this IMMEDIATELY after you install SH3 Commander, otherwise SH3 Commander has been known to demagnatise your fridge magnets, kill your guppies and otherwise make your life hell.
7. IF YOU RUN NYGM then after SH3 Commander is installed you will need to reinstall the specific SH3 Commander cfg files that ship with NYGM. Pls follow the NYGM instructions that you would have followed previously to (re)install those files.
8. IF YOU RUN GWX then after SH3 Commander is installed you will need to follow the BELOW instructions, as they are different to what is written in the GWX manual. IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS YOU WILL LOSE SOME OF SH3 COMMANDER'S NEW FUNCTIONALITY! In addition, your computer will likely turn itself off and refuse to let you use it again.
1. Either re-download or use Windows Explorer to find your copy of "GWX3_Commander_Files.exe".
2. Double-click on "GWX3_Commander_Files.exe".
3. Install to a TEMPORARY folder - it does not matter where as long as it is NOT your SH3 Commander folder.
4. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to where you just installed the files.
5. DELETE "..\Cfg\Ship names.cfg".
6. Move the remaining files from "\<your temp folder>\Cfg" to "\SH3 Commander\Cfg", overwriting the existing files.
7. Pray to Jesus, Allah and/or Buddha that all has worked.

If these instructions sound condescending to you, then they are not meant for you. Pls note that I DO NOT provide support for individual mods; any questions regarding compatibility or use with individual mods need to be raised with the respective modders. I also DO NOT provide technical support on how to download a file, use a mouse, open Windows Explorer, fix MS Vista etc.

Excellent news!

Thank you Jscones and everyone else who contributed http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

I particularly like the inclusion of crew losses for merchants: more human elements = more immersion http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

There is a detailed manual in PDF format that is installed with SH3 Commander. Here's the introduction from the manual:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">
Introduction

SH3 Commander has been developed to serve several purposes. It:

<LI>provides an historically-based framework around Silent Hunter III, such as adding Commander retirements, crew inward/outward transfers, and crew medal availability based on real criteria;

<LI>removes static gameplay behaviour by allowing changes to be made to game files based on the career date - ship skins, aircraft roundels, sensor settings etc etc can all be changed as the war progresses, just like they did in real life;

<LI>reduces gameplay certainty by supporting randomisation of any game setting in addition to simulating real life events such as malfunctions and sabotage;

<LI>extends Silent Hunter III by giving your Commander a true identity. SH3 Commander builds a full profile of your Commander, including date and place of birth, enlistment date, promotion dates, and other key attributes, which are all including in the Personnel File feature. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

It's a standalone application that you run before playing SH3. You run SH3 Commander to set up a new career, continue existing careers, or set a single mission.

The application provides useful settings (which you would normally set just once but can be changed at any time), career management and reports, and crew management.

I think most of the interface in SH3 Commander is self-explanatory, so here's a quick visual tour:

Hi VikingGrandad. It's nice being in the Atlantic once again. Two things. Does GWX have to be installed beforeCommander ? And secondly, I've added the mods from SubSim and the mods from this website. Will there be some conflict with the two ?

Hi Miechiel http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

No, you don't have to install GWX before SH3 Commander as SH3 Commander also works with the stock version of SH3 (i.e. without GWX).

Hi. Viking. I went to SubSim.com and got the page of downloads for SH3. There's quite a few. So, I downloaded them. And then in the Community Help of our website in the mods, there are a few. I was wondering that since some of the mods are similar, will there be a conflict with them working together. Up until now, I've been running a vanilla game, and it looks rather interesting with the mods added. Any thoughts ?

The simplest and biggest difference you can make is to install a supermods such as GWX3. After you've installed that, there's plenty of mods that are compatible with it... Just check the documentation that comes with the mod http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Got the new tablet PC, got SH3 installed, have GWX 3 Gold burned to a disc, now the links to "Commander" seem to have disappeared!
What the frak?
VG did such a stellar job with his presentation, everyone's comments and etc is inspiring.... so now what?
RJ, .... I know you're reading this.... turn on the link, be a pal!
Hey you!... yeah, you... call RJ and tell him to not leave me dangling!
OH, by the way, is there some thread with a workaround for the "Starforce" issue I have encountered with Vista Home Premium? Kudos to the Kapt. that can point me in the right direction.
Otherwise, I'll pull this forum right over and put in XP Pro if I have to! I mean it, don't try me on this!
I'll do it!

But, seriously, My guess is that somewhere in the thousands of tips, helps and "de-structions" (directions) that have been posted here, the answer surely lies waiting.
Shout when you're shallow!

PS in case it matters: HP tx2510us, Touch screen, ATI Radion 3200, AMD Turion 64 X2 dual core 2.1 GHz, 3Gb ram, handles SH4 great!

I'm getting the real ship names, but no cargo listing or crew losses. And still mildly annoying when a real ship name doesn't show up in the patrol log when the ship type exists in /data/sea/EnglishNames.cfg and the corresponding ship type code is listed in sh3 cfg file ship names.cfg.

Updated to 3.2 SH3 Commander and the GWX3 files for 3.2. While I'm reasonably certain I followed the directions correctly, and my computer has not turn itself off, anything could've happened.

Time for a reinstall?

I could be mistaken, but I think it doesn't retroactively change ship entries.

So, the patrol I did two weeks ago appears as it did, but when I finish my next patrol, it should have the additional data. I hope. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I believe you are correct - but this is the 2nd patrol of a new career with gwx 3 and sh3 com 3.2. I guess I'll see what happens next patrol.

Update: *Looks sheepishly* Hmm...if I had followed RJ's instructions to the letter the cargo and lost crew would have been displayed. A word to the wise: Do NOT install GWX3_CFGfor_SH3Commanders.exe as it contains it's own ship names.cfg.

Amazing what can happen when you follow directions!

You are correct. You can use the patrol log editor to manually update the entries as I have done. Using RJ's entry as a guide and cross referencing the cargotyps with individual ship class entries I've made an acceptable updated patrol log.

Can somebody tell me how to make the Niebelung radar work correctly? It's supposed to be mounted on the snorkel so I can scan while snorkeling. The radar range for all radars is no better than visual. That needs to be tweaked to allow the radar to detect a ship before visual contact. Any suggestions?
