Yup this is a highly flammable topic but....

....There are certain planes, you know, the big cannon type where the umm "pilot" flies about blasting everything in sight, the eh, "Thug Plane" let's call it. With the latest patch (and no, this not a patch whine, I think on the whole it was a great improvement) the P-39, alas, has entered the realm of "Thug Plane". It is now flown by an assortment of knuckleheads who actual think that they are good cause they can blow stuff up. I mourn the loss of the P-39 as a plane that required finesse and skill, whos pilots were brave indeed to take that thing up.

So.....long live the P 39, new Thug Plane of Choice!

There are other planes of course that are Thug Planes, but I leave it to you, gentle reader, to decide which.

And now....discuss, flame, whatev' http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Please be so kind as to not knock the people flying the P-39 who were flying it waaaaaaaay back in IL-2 days.

I'm gonna have to resume flying the big gun Yaks just to mess with peoples heads (and airframes).

Remember, none of the big gun birds have a lot of ammo, so unless they're good shots (making them not thugs, but stone killers) all they're gonna hear is 'click-click-click' after their first attack.

Veteran - Bermuda Triangle Expeditionary Force. 1993-1951.

My vote goes to the Bf-109G6s and later. Big gun, climbs fast and turns real well now.

mllaneza. No man, I am not knocking those who flew it before. In fact, I am one of them. I salute those who flew it when it was a beast, when it required a deft touch to tame it. I just point out, that now, there are certain "squads", that have taken to it all of a sudden. You know the type of squad I mean, the hyena type, that hangs out over airbases, pounces on planes at low alt and no speed and so on. It's the fact that these chowderheads are NOW using the 39 that makes me want to toss up my leafy greens.

Keep flying it pard, I'll fly it too, but so will the "Thug Pilots from Hell" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

That is the way the FW is now to a great degree. Back in the day it was like the P39...only a few flew it. Now the A9 is everywhere (big gun fever?) and when the TA152 arrives, I bet you won't see many 109's or FW's at all because of it's performance ability.

Is the A9 a thug plane?

Maybe...I'd like to think not. I have a rule of thumb for what I see online which is pretty simple. If more than half the players are using it, it must either A: be brand new or B: must have some FM advantage over the rest.

Cynical perhaps, but reasonably accurate I think.

Perhaps the P39 has undergone the same evolution in FM that the 190 has and has now reached a point where it is not uber, but more flyable than it used to be while still requiring skill to get the most out of it.
This makes sense to me in a lot of ways and explains the relative distribution of the P39 online compared to other types of planes.

The Yak9K has got to be a piss off http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, that 45mm airborne howitzer thing, i love taunting bombers with that plane- i like to let the fly, stay just out side their gunnery range, then as the get to the target dive in and put a couple of 45mm's in them http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

I have to admit, yesterday I was getting really tired of A9s, K4s, G6/AS, Me 262s flying around scaring the pants off of me with those HUGE cannons!
In my poor little P-40 or P-51, I couldn't destroy an aircraft without a 262 or 190 diving down and firing a million 30 mil shells all over the place, and leavin the enemy as a smoking crater.
I haven't seen many P-39s around anymore. But, last night's server had around 6 262s, 3 190 A9s, and at least that many big gun 109s buzzing around.
I could be wrong, but weren't the big gun aircraft mainly used to kill bombers?

Kind of a shame to read this as a new guy to the game.. I've always been a Luftwaffe junkie and I like the 109's and 190's... now I'll feel tainted by flying them :/

Don't feel tainted by flying them, they just have a bad case of "cannon envy."

Yeah I agree, don't feel tainted. You paid your money, fly what you want. Great pilots fly the big cannon crates too. I was just bemoaning the loss of the 39 to the forces of the knuckleheads.
