Hi

How do you guys imagine the RAF would have coped if facing the same onslaught that the Luftwaffe faced from the US Eighth Airforce Bombers and Fighters?

The Same conditions ie High alt interceptions US having the Jug, Lightning and Mustang. RAF facing them with Spitfire, Typhoon maybe even Mosquito.

The RAF would have the same advantage the LW had in terms of Radar warning and directing but had no problems with fuel shortages. I am just curious as the RAF was blessed with good high alt fighters for point interception and the Hispanno cannon would be effective against US aircraft of all sizes.

I think there would be the introduction of Spitfires with 4 x 20mm cannon sooner and also the Introduction of the Griffon engined Spitfire Mk 14 and Tempest sooner. The RAF would be able to cause havoc by having dawn intruders and night raids against known US airbases and supply depots. I am looking at this mainly from a British perspective - how do you guys view this scenario?

Everyone would run out of fuel in the mid-Atlantic. Or is this the Commonwealth defending Canada for some reason?

To answer the question we would need to know, where are the USAF flying from? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Haha, this is funny. Yet it is also thought-provoking.

This is the kinda thought that eventually leads to the invasion of a foreign land, so it's a little disturbing. (Im from the american side of the pond)

I think that if fighting would have occured in say.... 1942..... carriers would have been sent first to the British mainland, and all would have been sunk, or heavily damaged. The bombers (TBDs, TBFs, SBDs) would have all been decimated. The Wildcats would soon be 0 in strength. The Brits would have taken minimal losses.

If this would have happened any other year, the same results would happen. There is no way that US-Japanese fighting would have been a factor in deciding expirience, since a lot of expirience was gained from the RAF, then givin to the US.

No war with Japan would have meant slower development of late war (as we know it) planes. Hellcats and Corsairs may have been rushed. Mustangs might have actually been navalized to keep the carriers out of RAF range (yeah right).

A US offensive on the UK would have only been equal to a small effort of which the Germans would have just spilled in. Also, the Brits would have that added expirirence of just fighting the Germans.

Sounds bad..... I hate to think of such a thing, with the current state of the world.

I think it was a hypothetical question,, which means you can use your imagination.. I.E. The mighty Eigth turning up on Blighties coast in the same sort of state that they made landfall over Holland when bombing Germany. Carnage, is the one word which comes to mind. Would the Raf have done a better job than the Luftwaffe at defending their country? Who knows,, Do you!
