I ran accross the information of U-234

http://uboat.net/boats/u234.htm

The Commander was Fehler, and isnt that German
for Mistake/Error? It sounds like a mistake
and the Japanese on the boat killed themselves.

If that is the case, I suppose there have been funnier names.

My favourites are:
Kptlt. Sarto BALLERT (shoots around aimlessly)U 1166
Kptlt. Horst ELFE (fairy) U139
Kptlt. Herbert ENGEL (angel) commanding U666!
Oltn. Gerth GEMEINER (bastard) U146
Kptlt. Hans HUNGER (hunger) U336
Oltn. Ulrich KNACKFUSS (broken foot) U345
Oltn. Hinrich MANGELS (lacking) U1200
Oltn. Johannes UEBEL (woe) U883
Oltn. Karl WUNDERLICH (dotty) UIT-22

By contrast, the crew will have been proud to sail with
Oltn. Hans-Heinrich HASS (hate) U2324
Kptlt. Ulrich HAMMER (hammer)U376
Kptlt. Johann-Otto KRIEG (war) U142
Kptlt. Juergen KRIEGSHAMMER (war hammer) U8
Oltn. Guenther UNVERZAGT (never giving up - indeed, U965 sank off Loch Ewe 30 March 45)
And of course there was a whole wulfpack of "Wolf" (and variants).<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
