View Full Version : How many video cards have you been though with IL-2?

triad773

I recently got an nVidia GeForce 9800. I think (maybe) it will be the last card I get specifically for IL-2. As I was replacing this card (and mobo) I thought

How many video cards had I gone through trying to get that better eyecandy?

I know it has been at least 6 for me. How about you other enthusiasts?

The last I tried was 172 aircraft in a mission today with no or few studders- that would have made my last mobo and video card machine into a slide show.

Was wondering what others' experiences were?

Thanks for sharing your experiences http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

This poll is FUBAR... you need to start all over and put as options 1,2,3,4,5 etc.. this couple... few .... that is no joy man... (Hate to sound harsh but.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif) So if you want this poll to do anything but waste space on the forums edit it and reformat the question before anyone posts in it...

Umm... that reaction was unexpected.

Hey BC if you think this is messed up, then please delete the thread and PM me what's wrong with it.

I just thought it was best to give people a few choices and they could post something.

I'm pretty happy with what I have and was just thinking of how many times I'd replaced the video card.

Looks ok to me.

My first was an onboard GPU when I had a second hand Dell 400ish mhhz computer. Il-2 sat on the shelf above it until I could buy a new PC about three months later.

Next was an Nvidia 5200. Budget card of choice that saw me through to PF and it's first patch aircraft. Was getting very tired by then.

Nvidia 6800GT came next. Followed by an ATI loan card when the 6800 blew up (only had to wait a few weeks, but it put me off ATI & Il-2 as a combination).

18 months ago I got a tidy little cheque from an art gallery that bought some of my stuff for their permanent collection. It let me get a new quaddy with an 8800gtx. It still has room to grow, and should serve me well when Rise of Flight gets here.

I can see BC's point, however badly put, one man's "few" is another man's "many". For a poll you need quantitive options, not some subjective thing that will be different for each person.

The poll idea is good , but the wording and options are just wrong and un-votable.

I have personally gone through, including my current setup:
Onboard graphics by MSI (32mb ir I remember rightly)
Nvidia TI4200
Ati Radeon X800Pro
Nvidia 8800GTX (x2 in Sli) (Present setup)

I had to add a PCI Nvidia MX100 with 32mb of video RAM to play the original on my eMachines 900MHz computer. Since then, I've had the following in my machines (not necessarily in this order):

AGP NVidia ti4200(64Mb Video RAM)(I went through a couple of these)
AGP Nvidia ti4600 (64 Mb RAM)
AGP ATI 9800Pro (64Mb)
AGP Nvidia GeForce5800 (with a TV Tuner and 128Mb)
PCI-E GeForce6800GS with 256Mb
PCI-E GeForce7900GT with 256Mb
PCI-E GeForce8800GT with 512Mb
PCI-E GeForce9800GT with 512Mb (for perspective on how costs have come down, this one cost me $50 USD less than my first ti4200).

One of my current mobos is Crossfire capable, and I'm considering the possibility of going to a pair of the new ATI cards, but it depends on how much power I'll need when BoB comes out.

cheers

BC`s right. those options are far too vague.

You should have put (as an example).

1. 1-2

2. 3-4

3. 5-6

etc.

I bought 7, I think, 2 of which were non-starters due to lack of research. First was a really old Voodoo3 (wow) which actually worked on IL2 badly. Then TI4200 and a few more before my present GTX 8800 768 meg job.

Comparing first to last really brings it all into perspective. Strange, how things have changed. At the time I could barely afford the Voodoo and wondered how I would ever get another graphics card.

This is my 3rd upgrade. Began playing original IL-2 with the integrated graphics of my motherboard, and on up through 2 other ATI cards to my present X1950.

Including my original card? 5.

GF ti4800
ATI 9700
GF 6800GT
ATI 1650
ATI 4850

I've also built 2PCs other than the original in that time with these cards. (don't tell M$)

I can't say they were specifically for IL2 as I was hoping (and got) better and faster rendering for my editing software.

Maybe this summer it will be my 6th card, but that will obviously for BoB/RoF/Black Shark.

LMAO, the computer industry just loves the disposable income of gamers. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Started with a GF2 GTS and upgraded once due to 2nd PC needing a vid card about 4 years ago or so. I bought a used Ti 4200 128MB for $20.00 and have been running it ever since.

I have no need for eye candy. My only requirements are that the game runs smooth and allows me to be as effective online as possible.

Still running a raggedy old XP2600 (333), 2GB DDR333, 80GB - 8MB Cache HDD, 17" CRT with .25dp and an X-52. I've optimized my PC to run the only game I play online, this one.

Currently planning out my new build for Spring/Summer of this year that will take me into the current technology.

Hey I thank everyone for their input here and any additionally as well. I really do not know of any other 'game' I might have gone through such lengths to play, over time and thought it would be interesting to see how others faired.

Albeit the verbiage of the original post was not all it could have been, I am glad to see the result shows a variety of experiences.

From what I can remember:
- one ATi AGP card I don't remember when I got Forgotten Battles
- then the stock ATi 9550 on a pre built rig, shortly followed thereafter by a
- 9600 ATi AGP card, but then the fan starting making a very irritating noise after 13 months!
- X1650 ATi 256 AGP 8X (flakey card- it died after a about a year)
- X1650 ATi 512 AGP 8X (quirky: must have been the mobo combo with the power cord that didn't jell too well)
- 9800 GeForce nVidia 512 PCIe2. Not sure how IL-2 could get much better http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I just don't know what other thing you'd spend such money on (besides another woman http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Yeah I can see how that makes sense. You and BC are correct: the poll verbiage is too vague. And I often deal with editors all day http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif (not to mention being married to one http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ).

I'll try to see if I can make things like that more succinct when posting in the future.

I play this game since April/May 2007 and it's my third card now.
Started with a NVidia 6600, switched to a 7600GT a year ago and because of a heating problem while playing IL-2 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif I had to buy another one and I am still happy with my 8600GS. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

I think a total of 6:

Nvidia MX 440 (on my lousy Dell 8100 I had when the series first came out, total slideshow even at low settings)
Nv Geforce Fx5500 (thought the upgrade would help for Forgotten Battles; nope, should have gotten a better model)
Nv Geforce 7800GT (decent, but it bit the dust after 18 months)
Nv Geforce 7900GS (replacement for 7800GT, gotta love the EVGA warranty)
ATI Radeon X1950XT (loud and hot, but good performance. premature demise due to leaky CPU waterblock dripping on it)
ATI Radeon 4850 (fantastic performance for only $150)

No no not at all.. I am so sorry if I sounded like I was ****ed or upset.. not at all... All I meant was that .. the options you gave were kind of vague... it would have been better to put a specific number in the poll.. that way people could look at the poll results and say... hmm interesting most folks have gone through 2,3,5 or whatever number of video cards with this sim.. as opposed to ... a few... or a couple... etc... I apologize if I made you feel as if you did something wrong... other than what I said.. and even that.. hey.. it's your poll..

Exactly!!!

D@mn.. let me take those shoe laces out from between my teeth....

Again... sorry triad.. no offense meant at all..

and for the record... let's see...

ATI R9000 128 - Originally bought for my CFS3 upgrade but I bought IL2 @ 2 weeks before CFS3 was released.. and by the time it came out, and I tried it for the first few days it was a done deal for me... I was hooked on IL2.
ATI R9800 Pro 128 - The first upgrade specifically for IL2
GF 6800 GT - Prone to overheating
ATI HIS X850 - a gift from squaddie who got a 1950XT
GF7950Gx2 - The first foray into PCIE, got it used from a forum member for a good price.. unfortunately it died within the year... with no warranty etc.. I had to get another card.
GF9800GTX got it for $140 the week before Christmas... The last card I will get until the big upgrade..

I have had about 5 PCs (so it must be 7-9 cards http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif)
My latest card is a 9800gt 512mb and it will have to do for some time due to the current finacial environment/situation.

Hmmm, let me think.... OK

for IL-2 Sturmovik, an ATI Radeon 8500 with 64Mb memory (!)

A few months into Forgotten Battles, I went to Perfect with an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro with 128Mb memory,

which received an Arctic cooler ducted fan around AEP.

I bought an HIS x850 Pro 256Mb when PF was in,

and started into water-cooling just before '46 arrived.

Then I bought an HIS x1950 Pro 256Mb a year later, also water-cooled it -

followed by the 512Mb PCI-E version of the x1950 when I changed to 939 pin mobos

Now I'm using an AM2+ mobo, and the same card is still running well.

5 cards altogether then and, interestingly enough,

every one of them is still in regular use.

From the 9800 onwards they are all being used by fellow-fliers of IL-2 too!

Note, none of the above were just to improve this old game. The Nvidia 3200 Ti saw the last card that showed any big improvment.
No card showed any gain after the Nvidia 7950.
The 8800s were slower, the new 280 water cooled cards are no faster than the 7950s
in this sim.
I guess this old game is just to old.

Note to all you newbs, VooDoo 3dfx was the inventor and first user of Sli. I had one (two and a master, three cards in all) in 1998.

just three

- severely overclocked TNT II which eventually melted
- Radeon 9500 PR0
- current card is an X850 PRO installed about 2 or 3 years ago

I doubt I will ever build another dedicated gaming rig. I lost interest in playing IL2 with the hacks and mods (I now only skin) and PC gaming for genres other than flight sims (or WoW) is starting to quickly be overshadowed by the consoles.
