hi all,

I suspect that we all have a similar taste in films...or maybe not.

Have you seen any recent films that would be worth us as a community viewing??

Today I saw 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang'. Featured Downey and Kilmer and a very attractive lady who's name escapes me.I'd give it a score of 9 out of 10. Similar to 'Pulp Fiction' (my top film of recent years).

I'd also recommend 'Layer Cake',a British Gangster movie.

And also 'LA Confidential' but that is going back a few years...and also 'Heat'.

Best Regards,
MB_Avro.

Road to Perdition -
This is one movie that really surprised me. Without a doubt not your typical gangster movie. This is more of a thinking mans movie as well. Beautiful cinematography and acting of the highest caliber. I love movies like this. This is NOT an action film.

Being a fan of Steve McQueen here are three of my favorites.

The Thomas Crown Affair - Better than that modern version.

Le Mans - Quiet and intense and the best racing cinematography you will ever see.

The Great Escape - This is just a fun and enjoyable movie and a true classic.

The Last Samurai - I can't believe Tom Cruise is in this movie. Brilliant and atmospheric
I must say I am shocked. Highly recommended.

Master and Commander - I love this movie. It's like Gladiator on the high seas.

These are just a few of the movies I like.

Of the movies which are currently running in the cinema I reccomend Brick, The King, Waiting. 16 Blocks and Inside Man are also very watchable. I'm also looking forward to seeing Down In The Valley, it looks interesting.

I haven't seen X-Men yet, but the Davinci Code is so-so, MI III is a decent action flick, but not as good as the first two, Prime is a run of the mill comedy, Love + Hate is good from a British movie industry point of view, sorta thing, but it's quite hollow I thought, and Friends With Money sucks.

I liked this film a lot too. Even got the soundtrack which suits a lot of my artwork. But, I did find the film a little too sorry for itself and Tom Cruise should have been killed in the end. That would have been the correct ending to suit the theme. But of course being a Hollywood film, he isn`t allowed to die, which ruined the very end for me.

Xmen III I saw today was way better than expected because it ended completely unlike I expected. I thought Hollywood couldnt make it follow the comic of 20 years ending, but it mostly did. A nice surprise.

If you read the twenty book series by Patrick O'Brian you will see that this film is just a pathetic travesty. We call it 'Russell Crowe in a boat with a stray hobbit' around here. It'a shame to see the best ever evocation of the Georgian Navy twisted out of shape in this cynical way as just another 'hot' actor's showcase.

"Gladiator on the high seas" - that says it all. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Log off. Go to shop. Get 'Band of Brothers' DVD set. Report back in 12 hours or so. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

No contest, best war movie ever. Yes, I know it's a t.v. series. Any arguments? Good. Carry on, chaps.

Good point about the O'Brian books btw, Brando http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

'Lucky Number Slevin' - was OK but I fell asleep throught the last bit, there seemed to be too much rambling dialogue and not enough story.

Maybe others will like it. Sort of a gangster film, but not much action.

Got Band of Brothers from that new CEX (buy/trade) shops. The kids in their don`t really seem to know what they`re doing.

The Band of Brothers DVD was the US version, so wouldn`t work on the PS2 and when I stuck it in the PC DVD it changed the DVD version to US which meant I`d have to change it back every time to watch Brit DVDs, using up my precious `5 points and you`re out` regional setting.

They also sold me 1 gig of Ram that didn`t work... took that back too.

Took it back. Will get Band of Brothers at end of next week.

But yes, it`s an excellent series and I actually enjoy it more than SPR.

"Band of Brothers"- the best TV series ever! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif
The boxed DVD set stands pride of place in my collection.

The last film I went to see was "King Kong"...not the 1933 version I hasten to add, and I thought it was very good.

There doesn't seem to be too much in the way of must see films at the moment but I am looking forwards to "Miami Vice". Saw the trailer and it looks like classic Michael Mann who is THE top director for me.For those unfamiliar with his work check out:
"Heat"(1995)
"The Last of the Mohicans"(1993)
"Collateral"(2004)
"Manhunter"(1986)
"Thief"(1981)

He also made "Ali" and "The Insider".

He was the creator of "Miami Vice" the TV series.

No-one does crime and action to the same standard. His attention to detail is phenomenal. He was supposed to have been making "The Few" with Tom Cruise-the BoB film about Billy Fiske. If he does I think it will not be fiasco that many here are predicting.

Saw the Da Vinci Code. A thriller than doesn't thril and is totally predictable from the outset.

Looking forward to the next bond movie. Dunno why people are fussed about a blonde Bond, Moore was bloody ginger!

I'll have to look into those books. I was never interested in the old naval battles until I saw this film. Love those old ships.

Have to agree there. The whole Dan Brown thing is quite over rated. The only lasting thrill I got from his work was in the Angels and Demons book as the pissingly bad B-grade description of the dashing hero as he is dangling from the window of a tower in Rome:

"As Robert Langdon clung desperately to the window ledge, he thanked God for all those extra hours spent on the nautilus machine to give him his upper body strength and vice like grip."

I liked Master and Commander, however I have the ability to sit down and watch a film and know that it's there for entertainment purposes and is not supposed to be a direct representation of anything that was at one time real.

It's why I can watch SPR and not cringe too much at some of the silly "Hollywooditis" that it suffers too much.. (P-51's bombing Tigers, unarmed Medics charging MG42 nests)

Back on topic..

I thought "Kingdom of Heaven" was a good flick, very visually pleasing and didn't drag itself out too long.

"Troy" was good as well.. The fight between Achilles and Hector had some great choreography(Sp?).

Again, I have to look a little beyond any hisorical innacuracies, or deformation of mythology that may occour in such films.

Rented "Dawn of the Dead"(2004) last week. I'm a huge fan of the 1978 Romero original....the remake doesn't even come close. No humor, no politics...@#$% did these people even bother to watch the original?

There are a couple gore scenes that are well done, other then that it's a real let down. In Romero's version it takes several months for civilization to collapse as the zombies takie over....in the remake everything goes kaput overnight thereby missing the entire "society goes berserk" feel

Top Gun.. best war movie ever.

Convincing dialogue, realistic action, and a genuine love story.
