View Full Version : Size of Planes

Out of curiosity I put planes from different nations beside each other in FMB, just to see how planes compare in size. This is how fighters look:

http://home.online.no/~geibli/planes01.jpg

I had a few surprises when i lined them up next to each other. The "Zero" for instance. I always thought of it as a small and nimble aircraft, but hey look, it's bigger than many aircraft. The FW-190 was huge disappointment. I always thought of it as a big and heavy fighter, but then again, I was wrong. The Mustang is bigger, which I thought was a relatively small aircraft. The "Stuka" is huge and the BI-1 is just a little dirt on concrete. The Gladiator is surprisingly big, and the Hurricane too. I can go on and on... One thing is for sure, I was right about the P-47 and P-38. I guess there's something to this saying: "Everything is big in America".

I did the same thing with bombers:

http://home.online.no/~geibli/planes02.jpg

Look at that big awesome thing in the top left corner. Germany wins!!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Well, thank you for your attention.

I never realised how large the PBN/Y was. It looks almost as big as the B17. And the Zwilling looks tiny by comparison.

WTG Raven, that is really cool.

I saved them for future reference. The big shocker for me is the La5 next to the 109!

Cool, I was just thinking about this last night. I got a model of a stuka and P38(both 1/48th scale) and they're about the same size but that's just apair of models. What's weird though is that the He-111h is bigger then either section(the left side or the right side) of the He-111Z

Very good job, but I'm kinda surprised that you put the P-38 with the bombers and the HS-126 and Il-2 with the fighters http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif
And also to see that the C-47 is almost as big as the B-17!!!

this is very intersteing. I'm most suprised the mustang is so big.

Yes, I put a few bombers with the fighters and vice versa. Just for comparion. P-38, P-47, Stuka and IL-2 are on both pics. The P-38 is almost the same as Pe-2. Just to show how big the Americans are. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Doesn't that Cr.42 look just a *wee* bit big next to that YP-80? It looks as if some of the relative sizes are off.

Much of this is old news to those of us who came to this via scale modeling, but I applaud the idea and its execution. Good on you, Raven_Hill!

For those of you surprised by the relative sizes, think about a couple of things: range and payload, which in the case of fighters, includes guns and ammo. The Zero's size is a function of both its range and the structural strength required to handle carrier landings.

American fighters had to be able to make it to the next Air Force base, with a reasonable expectation that any model could make it from the manufacturer's plant on one coast to a major base on the other coast without requiring major maintenance, something unthinkable for most European military a/c...

cheers

Yea. A great visual study Raven_Hill. Often when I draw aircraft it`s then that I notice it`s size. The P-47 was a big shock when I did that one- it IS HUGE for a fighter!

You use the term 'fighter' loosely I assume :P

Actually, not telling YOU anything new since you have been around for a long time, but for those that haven't, and have only toyed with the many different planes we have; NOTE: Only a master can make a P-47 a fighter. Same goes for the P-38 and P-51 too.

Take something and measure the length of the fu****e on the H and compare that length to either side of the Z. They are very close to identical on my screen. It reminds me of some of those optical illusions out there.

Another factor that may contribute somewhat to misperceptions in sizes is the fact that not all planes are visible in a true plan veiw. The larger the angle of the fuselage relative to the ground, the smaller the plane appears to be here, to my eyes at least.

Finally, it is interesting to compare the trends in wing shape and design among nations here. The Germans clearly seem to favour long span wings with short chord.

Nice FMB work.

P~63 looks alot bigger than P~39. Wow!

Somebody here used to have a Ju~87 pic sig with little ant people standing near the nose and the thing is a HUGE airplane. Surprised alot of flighty simmers lol.

I never really thought of Fw190 as a large fighter. Medium perhaps.

Something is wrong with the scale in these pictures... just going by the Zero's wingspan. Using the the grid in the background as a reference, you can see that the Zero's wingspan appears wider than some other aircraft that actually had a larger span.

I see small errors, but all seems quite ok. What bothers me much more, is how scale is visible from distance. F.e. me109 is bigger from lets say 800m than p47, that should be fixed... sometimes fighters are bigger from distance then bombers.

Excellent idea Raven. Your "class photos" put a lot more life into the aicraft than mere length, wingspan, and height numbers. For example, the Spit and Zero may be similar in dimensions, but compare the round Zero fuselage to the Spitfire's anorexic look. Thanks for the comparison.

Did I hear anyone say bigger pics and printer friendly? I cranked up my hardware and took new screens. The new size is 1600x1200 (300dpi). You should get a pretty good print even in A4 size, but the best result will be 13x10cm.

Edit: Damn UBBCode. I'm not used to it. Just copy and paste the URL. It should work.

Well, it's a error... the Zero (A6m2) has a Wingspan at 12m and a length of 9m. The wingspan of the P47 is only 50cm greater.

The zero was not a small plane, but is was a light plane. This, and his great wingspan make it to a superb turnfighter.

As a Kid I was able to go to W P Air Force Mus,and I was pretty good with all my planes and stats, while we walked though the hangers, was able to tell all the different models and types, as you got to the door to enter the next part, there was a FW-190 hanging from the roof, and you all but had to walk under it to go though the door, so of course, you are pretty much looking up at the belly of the plane as you open the door and step though, right on the other side of the door was a P-47

MAN, what a shock that was, and did that ever drive home the point on how big the 47 was

I mean 30 plus years (closer to 40) and I can still remember it
