whats the tactic of your choice?..besides not..

I prefer to just man the gun myself and at long range i do the most damage to the weapon platforms especially if the enemy is attempting to broadside my boat from a distance. I've never sunk one because i prefer to keep my crew alive if possible and eventually the enmy will try to close and ram...has anyone sunk a destroyer with little or no damage to their boat ?

I have sunk a few Hunts with no damage to my own boat, but they are about the weakest of the DDs and you should be able to take out it's front turret pretty fast. After that it is turkeyshoot. But it does requite quite a few hits.

When fighting escorts I sail slowly almost head on (small target), engage at about 4000 meters. Beyond that you miss too much, closer and the escort might nail you very fast. Before it gets within 3000 meters I have usually put a good number of hits on her. Usually setting some fires. That also slows her.
I always start out with HE to get the range and bearing of the gun, then switch to AP.

Beware of Black Swans and Rivers, they might look tempting but they can take a serious punch and still plow you under. And the real DDs shold simply be ignored. I learned that when I engaged a V&W and consistently hit it from 3000 meters and until it rammed me. I expended all my AP ammo her and she had no problem ripping me to shreds after the ramming (suddenly she had a her broadside to me while my gun was pointing the other way).

I would never even dare to fight a Tribal or J-class, those 4 big fast guns up front will turn you into Swiss cheese in no time. And their hulls aer strong enough to take a good beating.

i tried to take out one of those River destoyers the other day with my deck gun (which i always fire myself) and boy did he put a hurtin on me. when he'd fire back he'd hit the conning tower right behind me and everything would get all blurry, sound would get real quiet too. in real life, if that happened just ONCE, yeah i'd be hightailing it inside and crashdiving. anyhow i kept firing and hitting but he just kept on coming, eventually rammed me over the engine compartment AAAAALMOST flipping me completely sideways. i will NEVER take on a destroyer again with the guns! no way no how!

I just tangled with a Tribal, for those fighter pilot types i got into a luftberry circle with it and finally blew every gun off of the thing but was unable to sink it after expending 150 shells on it at various locations so i tried ramming it and that did nothing , then it got the upper hand and started ramming me which just kept rolling my sub over in the water(the gunners boots must be glued to the decks, they never fell off),, i finally disengaged with 22% hull integrity and hit C and made it back to port with a ded officer (my wp) and 5 ded sailors..ok so i guess from other post that they can be sunk...eventually..i guess i should have put the last 30 rounds into the hull/waterline

Ive taken on flower corvettes with the deck gun it usually pays off, as they arent much better armed than your uboat, Ive sunk a few and smashed up plenty of others.

Flowers are blind if approched from the rear, you can sneak up behind them, then pop away, those few seconds it takes them to turn around (before they can open up with there only cannon on the fore deck) buys you just enough time to slap them with some almighty AP shells..., flowers can only take a moderate beating 5 or six well placed shots will reduce it to a burning wreck.

Ive actually gotten up to 400 meters behind a flower whilst surfaced in heavy fog in 44! and he still didnt see me! so shoved a falke up his @ss heheh http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

All great fun duking it out with a escort http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Sadly, it should only take 1 hit to make the u-boat un-submersable, well at least in a two direction way http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I sink destroyers all the time J class, C class V&W's My personal record is 7 in a single mission. I use the "here I am, come and get me" technique. I run one the surface untill he spots me than I go down and set a couse for a head on collision, I run a flank to make sure he knows where I am, then at about 550M I shove a torp up his nose. At that distance you can't miss. Or somtimes I'll use a stern torp to give the illusion I'm tring to run away. hehehe the hunter becomes the hunted. I also have never taken any damage with this method.

I only take on flowers, sneak up behind as they have no rear gun and open up as soon as they spot you. Usually no problem unless you have your deck gun unstablized (realizm option) and you happen to get 5 hail mary shells that miss by 2000 meters. Then things get tense. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

Just last night I made hell for the British at Gibraltar, at least their Hunt squadron.

I bagged myself a cargoship near a squadron, then came running a single Hunt I, I aborted my dive when I saw what it was and did a surface battle.

Nice! He closed too fast for me to follow properly. I sent shots under the waterline first but when he closed I tried to get his gun as he was getting closer and closer (straddling me), but I kept overshooting hitting the bridge. Finally he exploded after some 18 105mm AP shots and about 6 HE, the bridge was entirely black.

Then came his buddies, including a Tribal, knowing that I didn't have a chance I fled. A couple days later I met the same squadron, gave the Tribal an electric fish and engaged the last Hunt on the surface. Another victory for my snipers.

But beyond the Hunts I don't think we have much chance against DDs.

I made a DD single mission battle between a Tribal and a Type 34. So far it is 4:1 in favour of the Type 34. They are nasty... In the Tribal victory it was entirely engulfed in flames, in one of the Type 34 battles it had basically had everything but the guns shot off. And in a night battle (extremely wild action) the Type 34 was almost sinking (stern under the water), and a couple times it was dead in the water.

I also made a Type 34 vs C class... At first it seemed to be a no contest fight as the C class suffered a hit to the ammo bunks (thought it would blow up) and lost the two stern guns, but it consistently hit the Type 34 under the waterline and eventually the German ship was dead in the water but the British was sinking.

Trust me they are tough little ships.

My patrol record of escorts sunk (both guns and torps), 15, 9 DDs, 2 Armed Trawlers, 2 Elcos and 2 Flowers. But that was a dedicated patrol (I engaged every escort I met).

In WWII a U-Boat scored one hit on an escort type a corvette. That is the score for the entire war.
I could engage any destroyer at range and usually win (Though I never engaged a Tribal or J but sank every other class.
Now I play at 100%
I have reduced the deck gun's load rate so it is suicide to even fight an armed trawler because that is reality.
There is nothing wrong with your playing this like a game at all. But, when you decide to simulate being a real Kaleun you may want to mod your game to be a sim.
Just an opinion.

hmmm i play at 100% since i started since i'm kinda one of them "like the real world freaks"
was very frustrating the first 15+ missions till i found the wazzo and comm pages on sending fish into the enmy proper and revisted the trig 101 book in the garage.

Will try the surface attck options posted here..that is as soon as i get 1/2 proficient in identifying the DDs n stuff..since i hardly see them.. i usually dive and run away like a widdle gurlyman when i do see them(i like my crew).

Bonny, I agree. I try very hard to evade destroyers and that is real. If I get one that runs right in front of me or those few months where the homi fish have not ben counter measured (early 42) I will take them out but our jobs as Kaleuns is not sinking escorts, easily replaced, but the war material and playing real may sound snobish but all that go 100% find the challenge so much more satisfying.
Those depth chargings where you can not cheat but feel all locked up are so cool.
As the gsmers tire they may try 100% and like us wonder how we could have wasted our time playing when simulating is just much better (IMO!)
