OK I got a new PC for Xmas http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Means I can play Il-2/FB/AEP and Pacific Fighters faster‚‚ā¨¬¶

BUT! Instead of installing all the games on my new computer then the patches, then copying all my custom settings, campaigns, pilots, tracks and QMBs to their appropriate folders I just copied the 'Ubi Soft' directory from my old machine to the new machine.

It works, but I have a nagging feeling that I shouldn't have done this becuase some *.dlls, drivers and other do-das might not get installed and the registry wouldn't understand the programs.

In a nutshell should I be worrying or not, is it OK to do this or not?

Install for sure. Entries are made in the register with the install. Also, over time, the install becomes corrupted. (thats just the way computers are) I usually reinstall mine every 4-6 months after copying the information I want to put back in.

Some game updates/add-ons rely on registry entries to update correctly. While a copied install will probably play fine at the current version, updates may be an issue without a fresh install.

You'll want to back up:

Paint Schemes folder (if you have custom skins)
Missions folder
conf.ini file
Users folder
Any other folders you've made changes to (Samples for AI voice packs for instance...)

Thanks for replying - I thought you would say that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

What I eventually did was a bit of a bodge. I installed Il2/FB/AEP from disc onto my computer then I moved the Ubi Soft directory it created to the Recycle Bin (being careful not to empty it). I then simply moved my old Ubi Soft Directory in its place.

I guess this method is still not the best thing to do, although the registry will know about the programs as you said it won't know about the updates.

What I will have to do is move the bined version back, apply the updates then carefully copy all my customised settings back - what a chore http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Actually I think not! I only have to upgrade Il-2 and FB/AEP, from what I can see in the update patches is that all they do is copy newer files to the Ubi Soft folder overwriting the old ones. They don't actually update the registry or put any files any where else.

So my install from disc move to bin, then copy with my old version should be fine - Yippee! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I mean they are never gonna do updates for these old programs now are they http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
