Found a couple of screenies comparing directx 9 with 10.

The landscape/water was pretty darn good but when I saw these faces, well. You be da judge

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif that's some impressive stuff! Probably the first truly convincing reason to upgrade to Vista I've heard in a while!

One thing that's been chapping my $$$$ is how everything's becoming proprietary and intrusive. From the Government, employers, and the $$$$$$$ consumer goods that I buy, it's getting more and more ridiculous. As far as the topic at hand, I only began buying computers with the advent of Windows 98. I ran Windows 98 until I was forced to upgrade in 2004. The first thing that I hated was having to call up Eckbar Binjabe to validate my Windows XP installation. You see I reformat every three months whether I need it or not. In short order, the number of times I've registered Windows XP is easily exceeded the number of times they think I should have. Change a hard drive, ram, or some other hardware and Windows XP frequently wants to be revalidated. XP has become the insecure date from hell! I have two computers and two retail copies of XP that I've legally purchased. Rather than reward me for purchasing two rather expensive copies of their software, Micro$oft punishes me. If this product were a woman, I would have dropped her years ago. I can't believe that I'm letting myself be abused like this! I could care less about what the graphics look like, I'm very tired of intrusive and proprietary software. Hopefully I won't need a computer by the time I'm forced to upgrade to Vista. Computers have become the bane of my existence. Isn't it odd how technology is evolved to make our lives easier yet it's done nothing but enslave us to it???

Im with fork on this. Even though it's very pretty it's the same story repeating itself with MS;
1997: "DX6 will revolutionize gaming!"
1999: "DX7 will revolutionize gaming!"
2000: "DX8 will revolutionize gaming!"
2002: "DX9 is new best!"
2006: "DX10....WOW!"

And even though the API was utterly **** to begin with the games were soon being developed in DX. Recently though Carmack has said some positive stuff about DX9/DX10 but the main issue still remains - DirectX is a vendor lock-in strategy and DirectX10 does it much better than earlier releases. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

No, it will be openGl game, so... Hm, but it'll be interesting to see fsx on that settings running smooth http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It really hits the "yadda yadda" factor for me. Mukrosoft's 'Beads for the natives' stuff. Sure those are some beautiful images - especially the DX10 forest scene - but what difference does it make to how I enjoy what I've got now? I mainly play a DX9 flight sim - and the next two flightsims I'm considering, KotS & BoB, are likewise DX9-based.

All the rest of the eye-candy-desktop, digital-rights-management, file-security BS just leaves me cold. Vista seems to be designed for people who want to 'drive the vehicle but never look under the hood'. So be it, that's their privilege. I prefer to have some knowledge & control of the internals.

In a years time it may be different. I think I prefer to wait until the up-coming problems have been solved and a hacked version is available http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif and I'll only buy a license if it's a real improvement over XP Pro.

isnt the ms flight sim shot a artists impression and not an actual screen shot?

Dx10 has support for the shader model 4 standard, its like in il2, the shader 3 water looks way better than 2 but runs like ****

...And every pretty baubel that has to be rendered is taking cycles away from an accurate FM, DM, physics model, weather model, ballistics model - basically the things that make a flight sim "feel" real. I'm all for a pretty view - but not if I have to exchange it for flat trajectory bullets, "rails" FM's, and an airspace that is static without wind, turbulence, or weather (present company excluded http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif)

I've yet to see game graphics that come close to looking like the propaganda clips we saw back when DX9 was released. There still hasn't been a game that looked like the demos that came back when I got my original 9700Pro. I'm not holding my breath on the claims made by the "bullshot" clips you see about DX10.

Those images have been around for a while now.

DX10 isn't even complete yet so how is it possible for them to have screenshots?

According to M$'s developer's blog we are months away from FSX even being DX10 ready and that's only after you install the patch they are promising. To be sure DX10 will probably be nice but the simple truth is there are no games/sims yet that have been written for DX10.

IL-2 will still look the same since it was written for DX9 and won't receive any DX10 upgrade.

A little intro in DirectX..
The only difference you're ever notice is the ..

+ Texture resolution - The bigger the BMP/jpg/etc file is.. the more detail you'll see.
+ The lighting effects have been there for a few versions of DX??.
+ I think the big improvements will be in more efficient coding. You'll find in every computer product that the coding is inefficient mainly coz of the moronic rush to get it sold... err windoze is a glaring example.

Now taking all of the above into account, you might find that your current graphics accelerator card, that has enough Vram will not have a problem... problem solved

The second pic, the one with the water is an artist rendition. These were in PC gamer months ago. I have yet to see some good FSX shots rendered in D10. Probably because there is not a system that can come close to maxing out FSX's settings yet. The game was released a year ahead of its time. Perhaps Crysis or Alan Wake will prove better.

Not really, new shader models continue to evolve, in this case SM4. Obviously the jumps these days are not as huge as the jumps 5 years ago.. we're hitting diminishing returns. But there is still progress.
And SGI is virtually bankrupt http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
