This morning i saw a great documentary about the christmas ritual (The tree ,exchanging gifts etc) and its origins.

The docu explained how the christmas tree and the song "Silent Night,Holy Night" made its way from Germany to Britain.

The ritual of celebrating christmas with gifts and a christmas tree was brought into the British Royal family by Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha who knew it from his own childhood in Germany.

He married Princess Victoria of Kent (who later became Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Queen of Prussia)

Queen Victoria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_victoria)

But the real breakthrough came when famous english writer Charles Dickens described the "pretty german toy" in his book "A Christmas Tree".

They also showed the direct connection between "Silent Night" and the christmas tree with the christmas truce of 1914, arguing that both things made the truce possible in the first place.

Later the christmas ritual made its way to the USA and had a rather problematic start there as english puritan immigrants who didnt liked it at all and already tried to fight its spread in Britian, now tried to prevent its introduction to the "New world".

They had the opinion that the ritual involving a decorated tree and gifts was paganic but as the german immigrants vastly outnumbered them it became a basic part of american culture nonetheless.

They traced the USA wide success of the christmas ritual back to german immigrants selling christmas trees in New York. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Excellent post as usual Cel http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif I have learnt something new today, I never realised who we have to thank for the tree http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

But,I have to agree with Karl_Doenitz though. Although I admit Christmas is a magical time of year and I loved it as a kid and not just for the presents it has become a monster of self indulgence and greed. It has become far too commercialised where only profits matter. The true meaning of the festive time is overshadowed with shopping. Shopping is the new "pagan ritual". I'm not being a "bah humbug" I've just become very cynical and have realised how bad Christmas has become. Christmas is never a good time for those who spend that time alone.

As I work in the retail trade as the delivery boy I have found out how much waste is generated over this time of year. So much food is thrown away in skips which would make the hungry turn red with anger and green with envy http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

From a personal note it's not a good time of the year for me, but I try my best. So I will end this on a happy note - Merry Christmas to you all & stay safe http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes, I've seen a similar program. Isn't the tree itself though, borrowed from a pagan ritual?

Speaking of the christmas truce, I recommend the movie Joyeux Noel, about the christmas truce. It's in all original language.
