View Full Version : So how fast should the YP-80 roll?

That plane is a blast now. Maybe too much fun. lol

The feeling of speed is extreme, the vis is good. It looks cool, turns well (I hear too well, but, IDK one way or the other), is fast, accelerates and climbs well, and has phenomenal roll rates.

Even at 200-250kph it's roll is about that of most other planes. From 250-500 it's almost too fast to control. I don't know how fast it really is (don't feel like going through a proper testing procedure lol), but.....damn.

Is it right?

Anyone know of any campaigns for it? (thought it might be a bad idea as it would be quite jading. lol)

My grandfather flew the F-80 in Korea. Granted it was a heavier aircraft than the YP-80 we have, but he says that even if the plane could have rolled that fast, which he says is practically impossible, he wouldn't have wanted to anway because he would have gotten so sick "they would have been cleaning my vomit from the gauges for the next three weeks"(his own words).

Now YP-80 feel like a F-16 IMO... It looks like playing a gun-only dogfight in Falcon 4.0 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It shouldn't roll at all... at least in this game. It saw no real combat. It played zippo, nadda, none role in WWII.

Just went for QMB and did the 80 vs. 4 other 80's
seems like a korean war sim, eh?
Fun, got two, one splashed, two bailed and the last sucker drilled me when I was blacked out.
Hmmmmm anyone see a Korea map i.e. the mountains?

Hawg, I hosted a "korea type scenario" in 2.0. None of my usual interesting and thought out (if convoluted at times) explanation behind it. Just US vs VVS. All planes from all years.

Was a blast. I forget if I gave the VVS the lend lease planes or not. What I think I did was let them have the 39 but not the 63 because of the change from ally to enemy, or something like that.

I need to redo that and get it on a better map.

I'm kinda surprised that nobody wants to talk about this. Unless the fact that it's a jet is the issue (nobody flying it because everyone is afraid of jets. lol).

At 490-ish it rolls like it has JATO bottles on the wing tips. Seems that it can't be right, but, I don't really know.

I see what you mean about the roll rate, it is very fast indeed... I was doing consecutive barrel rolls at around 500 kph with 95% power and it is impressive, no inclination to stall and little loss of speed, despte the fact I was using as much control deflection as I could (well, at least it was impressive until I blacked out...).

I don't know if its within the capabilities of the aircraft or not, but as BigBear84 said it is certainly outside of those of a real pilot.
