View Full Version : Your Opinion On Bombbay Doors

11-23-2004, 09:30 PM
Hello Everybody,

I would just like to get your opinions on the bombbay doors. I'm sure you all have noticed that during a bomb run they open, release bombs, and close quickly. I think it is unrealistic and could be improved. So I was thinking about maybe getting another key command called "Bombbay Doors Open/Close". Of course it would be a user defined key. I think it would be nice to open the bombbay doors myself a few miles before the target and then closing them soon after releasing the bombs. I just think it would add a little more to the game if we had to open them ourselves. It would also be nice if we could have seperate pilot & bombardier positions. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Thanks for your time. I am looking forward to hearing your opinions on this subject. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif =S=

interesting idea and all, but i could find some better things to do with the developers coding time than this project.

A legitimate feature to ask for, since the early bomb bays could take a relatively long time to open and caused air resistance.

A good idea but don,t forget some hydraulic sounds and sounds for retracted undercarriages as well for the wheel-wells!(,,Cloink,,)

Would be a nice feature.

I too would like to vote for CDM.

Very good idea.. Can it be done ??

This is one of the small details that for some reason never get put into the game it seems. Although opening canopies, another small thing, really adds to the immersion in the game.

It would be great to have, to make this sim that much greater.

I'm highly in favor of having control over the doors.

But, I suspect the coding difficulty might be in opening/closing speeds, which may not be all that easy to do differently on different aircraft.

Hello Everyone,

WoW! I wasn't expecting this kind of response. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I definately would like to see this feature added. I personally think its the "little things" that make an excellent game. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I don't know what would have to be done to get it in the game, but it would really only be for the flyable aircraft with bombbays. But would also be usefull for the other aircraft that are being made flyable. On the other hand, they have added new key commands in a patch or two before (I think). Maybe somebody in contact with Oleg and Crew could bring this to his attention. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif =S=

P.S. Maybe I will send it to the bug report address if more people respond. Its also for suggestions aswell. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You most definitely should have to control bomb bay doors. Those things added a LOT of drag to the airframe.

In the cockpit you might not hear it, but you can bet there's a lamp somewhere that will light up to let you know they're open.

It might also be a factor that bomb bay doors can't be blown/torn off in FB or PF. They also do not have their own hit locations.

So they would open on demand, but high speeds would not affect them, nor would bullets hit them.

Its also questionable as to whether the doors affect your FM at all. The doors are open for such short periods in FB/PF, that they may not have bothered to model this. So they might open on demand, but wouldn't actually slow you down or anything.

Correct, it would have no impact on gameplay. However, opening and closing the doors may help some pass the time in the long Pacific missions.

Try the A-20 or B-25 with parafrags. They open, a few bombs drop, then they close, and the rest of the bombs fall through the closed doors.

Hello Guys,

Well theres a good reason to have this little feature. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Even if they haven't modelled drag from the bays, who cares. Bombers are slow anyways. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif =S=

Not all bombers are slow. SB outran all German fighters until Bf~109B. But the doors are open for such a short time its not worth coding for player control of doors.

well I love opening and closing the canopy so much I can only imagine how much fun it would be to open and close bombay doors all the live long dizay.

you know what would be even cooler? people using the search feture. I know of atleast 2 other threads on this EXACT topic.

Hello LEXX_Luthor,

I wasn't refering to aircraft like the SB. I was actually refering to the large 4-engine bombers like the B-17 & B-24. Plus it isn't historically correct for the bombbays to open, release load, and then close. In aircraft like the B-17 they were opened a few miles before they released their bombs. This was so when the bombardier callibrated the bombsight to make for more accurate bombing. Expecially with the Norden. So "if we do" get more 4-engined bomber like the B-17,B-24,and B-29 we'll be able to use the bombbays as they should be used. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif =S=

P.S. I am going to send this link to the bug report address as a suggestion. If it gets incorperated then cool,if not then oh well. It was a suggestion. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Yes the bomb doors should be opened and also the bombs should be armed before making the bomb run because that is part of doing the job. One thing I found interesting is that the bomb bay doors on Betties were left behind at the airfields. When I looked at the betty in this game from outside view it had no bomb doors. This is good modeling.

Open the bomb bay doors hal.

Hello Everyone,

Well I did send an email to Oleg about this. Today I received a reply from Oleg. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Here is what he said.

"You started for nothing. Always better toask at first developers. We will
not work over that feature in PF. Sorry for us it is currently impossible.
So maybe in BoB only."

So I guess we will have to see if this is done in BoB. Oh well,it was a suggestion. Was worth a shot. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif =S=

I think Oleg made that exact reply to the muzzleflash issue back in the day...so.

Perhaps Oleg now will make them openable enough to squeeze a squirral throu http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif
