View Full Version : Whose Uniforms looked the coolest/dorkiest in WW2?? - WW2 Fashion Show...

I always thought the Germans uniforms looked by far the coolest atire in WW2, especially the SS... The US and Brits late war also looked OK.

Unfortunatley the Brits early uniform pre 1944 looked really dorky as far as I'm concerned. An enemy should strike fear into their opponents and that WW1 tin hat just looked sooo sad http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'd rate them like this

Coolest.

1. Germans (SS in particular)
2. USA army after 1943
3. Brits after 1944 Para style helmet and baggy green uniform.
4. Russians post 1943 - looked pretty **** cool although Im not a fan of those soft style hats they wear (navyish in style), the helmets look good tho.

Dorkiest.

1. French, **** that hat looks like a big belle end. Not scary.
2. Brits Pre 1944, that brown baggy suit and daft WW1 helmet, who would be scared of anyone wearing that?
3. Italians, never a fan of their uniform, but its not as bad as the top 2.

And thats it for my 'Fashion Show of WW2' Totally pointless I know but I'm interested in your thoughts all the same.

On another note, I'm sure the UN armies thought the same about the Germans cos they all use that style helmet now. (Nothing to do with the extra protection round the neck at all http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)

Any comments?

Coolest?
IMO, the finns:
http://www.chez.com/barbarossa/gallerie/si39.jpg

most "uncoolest"? the US.. dunno why but they look to "un-matched" and "leisure" style for my taste.

also the russian uniforms looked nice witht the long boots and the uniform "tight" on the bofy with the small collar on top http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I recall Patton wanted US tankers to wear a uniform he designed, a leather uniform with pink stripes. Maybe somebody has a better description of it. This would probably have been the dorkiest uniform if it had been adopted.

Nazi women don't do it for me either. We'd argue all the time about politics.

I've noticed however that a number of threads, either involving women or uniforms seem to turn that way. I just 'accidently' stumbled across some pictures I thought someone might appreciate. heh

1) Nobody, but NObody would be captured alive wearing it

2) US tankers wouldn't EVER bail out of their tanks again

I note that the choices are extremely limited.

US Marine Corps dress uniform is/was easily the best. That is class

German uniforms were marvels of sinister and/or effective design. Can't hold a candle to the USMC dress uniform though

The greek uniform with the pom poms on the shoes, the head tassel, the poofy ballerina's white skirt and panty hose were carefully designed to allow greek soldiers to track and corner sheep at the edge of cliffs where the sheep are more inclined to push back.

The uniform was not just for looks. It was funktional as well.

The American service uniform looks good, and so does the Russian naval service uniform (anyone remember Sean Connery from €œHunt for the Red October€?). They are bout strict and sombre in line, giving a disciplined and masculine impression. Personally, I like the standing collar and somewhat sparse cut of the early 1900-style uniforms. The Norwegian service uniform also follows those lines, and was actually used by the Royal Guard during the battle of Norway, spring 1940. I thus nominate it as WWII€s best looking combat uniform. Here€s the Norwegian crown prince Haakon Magnus wearing it:

http://www.vg.no/bilder/bildarkiv/997128127.jpg

The Germans generally looked good, and so did some of the Russian uniforms with pullover tunic, riding boots and long boots/puttees, as long as the soldiers where slim (usually not a problem during WWII€¦). Also, a fit soldier with the British battle dress (the early war outfit) had a certain elegance, though the €œchapelle de fer€ was of medieval design. The uniform looked good with a boat-cap.

On the bad side are the Americans, wearing baggy, zipped uniforms with a multitude of pockets. As mentioned by contemporary writes, they made war look like work. Very functional uniforms, but they made the soldiers look like badly dressed plumbers. Unfortunately, functionality prevailed, today most armies are dressed along the WWII US lines.

Finnish soldier in Winter War. As the war broke out some of troops could only be issued with a national insignia for their fur hats, other equipment being mostly their own civilian clothing, hunting rifles, etc. This soon caused the nickname of infantryman "Model Cajander" (named after the Prime Minister Cajander) to be born.)

Dress Blues
The famous blue uniform of the Marines with a standing colar. The uniform is similar to the one worn by Marines in the Civil War. The "sky blue" infantry trousers are adorned by a red "blood stripe" down the outside seams on commissioned and non-commissioned officers. This uniform is worn with medals (without medals it was at one time called Undress Blues). Current usage refers to Blue Dress A (with medals), Blue Dress B (with ribbons), Blue Dress C (sky blue trousers with khaki shirt, field scarf and ribbons) and Blue Dress C (short sleved khaki shirt and ribbons).

If you like helmets here are a few from my collection.

German WWI M1916 after restoration. The liner is an exact reproduction made by Prarie Flower Leather Company on actual German machines from WWI. It even has the helmet pillows stuffed with real horse hair like the originals.

US GI M1 fixed bale all original with the soldiers name tapped to the inside of the liner with medical tape. The leather liner strap is a repro as the original is cracking. The soldier's name is Paul Ferse.
