Hand it to the press to get all the facts right.

Don't be hard on the reporter. He forgot to convert from US to UK metric. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

No, he forgot to check his facts. The difference between a 27mm gun and the mighty GAU-8 is huge!

And didn't we3 go through this same issue here in the states about 40 years ago, when they biult the F-4 Phantom? ever since then, every new American combat jet has comew equipped with the M61A1 Vulcan cannon, or something bigger.

They still teach the infantry how to use a bayonet, even though the last time they were used as the primary infantry weapon were the Napoleonic Wars. A gun on a combat aircraft is no different. You hope you never need it, but it's there if you do.

I was being sarcastic. As far as I know there isn't a 27mm gun in the US inventory.

Exactly. I don't know why these clowns still have their jobs. Every two bit military aviation history buff on the planet knows about the F-4 Phantom gun fiasco.

The Brits and the USN never did put internal guns on their Phantoms, But to take a fighter that's designed to have a gun, and remove it to save a little money, that's like ordering a fleet of new cars without a spare tire because you'll never need them, just dumb.

1 Politician > 1 moron
2 morons = 1 politician
1 Politician + 1 politically correct dummy = 10 morons +1
If the above statements are true how long does
it take to formulate an extraction date from Iraq.
If your answer is 125nm over 6 then guns are definetly needed on the Eurofighter Typhoon.
Simple quantum physics. If in doubt ask Megile

This story reminded me of Guy Gibson's ENEMY COAST AHEAD where he took off on his first war mission in 1939 and observed that nobody had ever taken off with live bombs before.

I remember seeing an interview of a Battle of Britain Pilot who said that pre-war aerial aerial gunnery training consisted of firing 100 rounds into the North Sea, kind of hard to miss.

The Bureaucrats and Engineers that design and procure combat aircraft have declared the dogfight dead since the end of WWI. They've been wrong every time. The Techno-geeks are at it again, this time their trying to eliminated the pilot with these UCAVs that they're developing. I have a feeling though, that if these things ever do go to war, they won't last longer than it takes for the enemy to engage with a manned aircraft.

No matter how sophisticated the damn things are, some ******wood has to climb into it and actually fly it. That ******wood is called a pilot.

There was an item on the news a few weeks ago where a Brit para had taken some video of a fire fight in Helmand province using his mobile phone, an A-10 showed up and let rip with its GAU-30 and the effect was astonishing! A whole stand of trees just disapeared. No wonder they like having the Warthog on call.

Maybe they'll think about retro-fitting ADEN 25mm to the Harriers. The ADEN 30mm project was binned.
