You looking for online or offline?

That would be an important difference to clarify.

Offline, get a copy of Rowan's Battle of Britain and then visit http://www.bob-ma.org/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=MostPopular to pick up the open-sourcecode modifications that include improved weather, flight models, and other goodies. I just picked up a copy of the game from Ebay for $8 and am having a blast with it.

Online, there isn't really much that compares to IL2 for quality. Warbirds, Aces High, Targetware all have their warts.. and don't really measure up to IL2. If you're looking for something a little different like a persistent 24/7 world that includes a ground war, you could try WWII Online, but be warned that the flight model isn't as complete as IL2. The trade off is that you do get a pure ballistics model for each round fired and a full-time ground war with real players to support.

When Oleg kicks out the pacific theatre later this year with aircraft carriers, etc... I'll need a bedpan and an IV-drip because I won't leave my computer for weeks.

Weeeee!

That's sort of scary http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Its either scary because there's fans that dedicated to a game OR because there's fans that dedicated to things of the past.
Either is fine by me, just felt like proding you http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Do you have just il2? or do you have the forgotten battles one as you get twin engined planes in that as well or do you want more modern ones? there is a cracking WW 1 just out recently but i cannot remember the name http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You might wish to give Combat flight simulator 2 WWII pacific theater a go,There are quite a few people that enjoy it...I myself enjoy both,Each has its positives and negative aspects.Forget cfs1 and 3' 1 is pretty long in the tooth and 3 can't compare with either of the two mentioned above in playability or graphics.cfs2 also enjoys very heavy support from the flight sim community as does the IL2 sims Which almost everyone feels is second to none.As it now stands I myself would buy any sim by Oleg Maddox that even remotely pix my interest..

Being strickly a prop type person i still find it very hard staying away from the lastest jet sim offering Lock On!

Ace's High and WarbirdIII are a blast even if they don't measure up graphic wise to IL-2.
Ace's High usually has about 200 to 500 ppl online at one time. and Warbird used to. Now depleted Numbers have cause ppl to look for greener pastures. Graphically speeking imho Warbirds is nicer looking, but since warbirdIII has come out with problems with the turnover from warbirds 2.77 ppl left and went to Ace's High. Both can support lots of ppl online...

There's nothing like seeing all those ppl online in a combat sim. and there is no greater thrill than to shoot down an a real person online rather than AI.

If only IL-2 FB where able to have that many playing at one time.

Here ya go: http://www.hitechcreations.com It's called Aces High. It is an excellent Online SIM! We have 500 + players in the Main Arena every evening with 300 + on a Sunday morning. The SIM is played world wide. You can fly any of 60+ planes and drive many Vehicles, or patrol in a PT boat. You can "man" the field ACK or shell the shore from Crusiers, Battle ships, and Carriers. You can chose to take off and land on the Carriers. Literally everythings there but the infantry. The flight models are very acceptable. There is In-Game VOX that works! The AH server is generally Lag free and game play is very smooth. That said, understand that the graphics CAN'T be as good as FB with that many people online. That's why the multiplayer here at FB is at best, difficult. It's hard to find a server playing your kind of game with good pings and no lag.
Aces High has a FREE download of the entire game (34 Megs) and 2-weeks free online play come try it. It's then 14.95/month for all you can fly or if purchased in 6 month chunks its 12.45/month

Aces High is my Main SIM for online combat.
Forgotten Battles is my Main SIM for beauty and reality of flight. My dream is that someday there will be a SIM that combines the best of both SIMs
GL,
If you want more info/help, E-Mail me at duff4r@cableone.net I am the XO of one of the larger Fighter Groups in AH and would be pleased to have you join us during your trial 2 weeks.
My best S~

Uuuh this is the wrong forum to ask that kind of question. Some derive pleasure from MicroSoft's CFS3 (especially with the commercial "Firepower" addon), although there are many here who hate that title and to be fair there are numerous reports of difficulty getting their computers to run it smoothly. CFS2 (Microsoft Pacific Sim) although older than CFS3 is still being sold at relatively cheaper cost and still has community involvement as well. I never got the CFS series, and now that Maddox games may be putting out a Pacific or Carrier based sim (nothing really official - just hints so far) I will probably not get CFS2.

Bargain bin golden oldies like Janes WWII fighters and Infogames European Air are OK if you don't mind older graphics (they are quite old now, but have community upgrades),

I tried Aces high a long time ago and thought it was kinda neat the way you get very stable online gameplay with a huge amount of people connected, but there is no offline AI AFAIK and at least then the cockpits were not super authentic, but they did have things like adjustable views and Fuel tank switching, fly in a B17 (all gunner positions), tank and AA gunner, etc. that FB doesn't have.

Sure........ there are lots of WW2 airplane games out..none as good as IL2FB and none in my opinion that qualify as a flight sim.

I liked a flight simulator called "B-17 Flying Fortress, mighty 8th" very old but still good fun and very cheap

"The Chilean Airforce" (FACH) The 4th oldest in the World...

fulanito_chile, I agree. B17 II will let you bomb like no other sim out there. We fly it every week in v8th Ops. Too bad Atari won't update it or someone make a "new" B17.

Now if the bombsites in FB work the same as B17 II's we'd have a "complete" sim. But I'm afraid that will never happen in any of the US bombers that will be in FB in the future.

The only one of those other sims I flew online was CFS 1 & 2 there my handle was basically the same as it is now except for TRT_99Bearcat or AHRT_Bearcat or RT99th_Bearcat. The others I flew offline.. and you forgot Fighter Ace....they didnt move me enough to pay to fly so AFAIC they werent all that. IL2?? Well since then I have spent thousands to get this thing runnig the way I want it to if I include all the hardware changes and FB. Air Warrior, Flying Circus & DOA I am not familiar with..but I know they cant be this good or else everyone would still be flying them. I also never got a chance to fly EAW.. which I have heard a lot about.. but now I figure why bother.... Im not going to go backwards.. not oine inch. CFS3 I have but never got it to run right.
