Can we have any flavour of pie or is it just one?

From the uncreative kleptomaniacs at City Interactive comes the first-person shooter Sniper: Ghost Warrior. Or to use its proper title; ‘How not to use a ghillie suit’.

The story is by no means original or easy to follow. You play as Gunnery Sergeant Tyler Wells, a US Marine scout sniper who sounds like Alex Mercer after eating nothing but throat lozenges for 6 weeks. You’re paired with some redneck spotter named O’Neil (who sounds like Swagger’s spotter from the movie Shooter) who ends up getting shot at the end of the first mission (again, just like in Shooter). Your mission is to go into a fictional South-American country to assassinate General Vasquez who’s forming a coup d'état (gee, that’s never been done before) and sure enough you do so in the first mission. At first you and your spotter have a hard time trying to identify your target because his head is blocked by the upper portion of a window frame, a problem that could easily be solved by going prone to drop your eye level another few inches but I couldn’t do so because the game scripts you to stay in the same position! So wanyay, I aimed down the sight, pulled the trigger and hit the bugger right in the spleen – the bullet cam confirming my 100 yard kill as I watched my target ragdolize on the floor behind a cloud of arterial spray. But then the entire compound managed to deduce my exact position - even though I was equipped with a suppressor on top of a cliff - and my superior (codenamed ‘Mother Two’) apparently wasn’t watching the bullet cam and began complaining that the target is escaping to his jeep and I must chase him down. Look missy, I know a dead <STRIKE>parrot</STRIKE> target when I see one and I’m looking at one right now. He wouldn’t escape if I stuffed him in a cannon and launched him to Azerbaijan; he’s bleeding demised. He’s passed on. The target is no more. He’s gone to sleep with the dead. He has ceased to be. He's expired and gone to meet his maker. This is a late target. He’s a stiff. Bereft of life, he rests in peace. If I hadn't severed his spinal column with a .308 he would be pushing up the daisies. He's rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex-target!
To which the developers reply “Well we’d better replace it then,” so you have to kill the exact same guy again at the very end of the game for no apparent reason.

From there the game only keeps going downhill faster than a German Spitfire piloted by a depressed hippo, being full of other predictable plot points (such as the mandatory nukes) and the final mission ends with a cliché shot of the good guys casually walking away from a large explosion in slow motion. And then there’s the short epilogue mission at the last minute where you re-snipe the guy you were meant to kill in the first place; it’s almost as if the developers went “F***, we forgot the main antagonist!” The graphics are passable, most current PCs should be able to run it on high settings with little or no difficulty. But the visuals of the lush jungle were copied directly from Crysis so they can’t be given any points for it. For a game that’s supposed to focus so heavily on stealth the developers seem awfully keen to keep you in the sunlight as much as possible. You don’t have a lot of time to stop & admire the scenery anyway as the game keeps pushing you forward relentlessly. The NPC animations in this game are really jerky as well (except in cutscenes) as your spotter completely fails to grasp the fact that a ghillie suit only works if you’re not moving, judging by how fidgety he is and how often he gets detected by the enemy... which is why he usually hangs back in an OP while you move ahead and do all the work.

The player animations aren’t that smooth either; Tyler’s reload animations make me think I’m playing an epileptic coming off a severe nicotine addiction. And for some reason Tyler can’t seem to hold his pistol straight, making it hard to aim properly. I’m wondering how the hell he managed to pass scout sniper training in the first place, his sprinting speed is more of a slow jog and he gets puffed out really easily; his heart rate goes from 80bps to 115bps after crawling less than 2ft. I thought snipers were supposed to have outstanding fitness, but then I remember Tyler is actually a designated marksman – not a sniper as the game tries to have you believe (there’s a difference, go look it up). There’s even one point in the game where Tyler unprofessionally drops his radio down a gorge because it wasn’t secured to his LBV properly, which leads to another mission where he has to infiltrate an enemy camp to steal one of their radios so he can call his mummy.

There’s nothing original about Sniper: Ghost Warrior. Everything gameplay-wise about it has been done before and done better; the knife/melee takedown is exactly the same as COD (albeit less effective), you switch between your primary & secondary weapons by pressing either ‘1’ or ‘2’ (just like in COD), you’ve got throwing knives that kill instantly (just like MW2) and claymores for setting up ambushes (except you never get an opportunity to use them). You switch between different characters & gameplay styles throughout the campaign (again, just like COD, although it feels a lot more disjointed and confusing in S:GW), all the sniper mechanics have been copied from every (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sniper_Elite) single (http://au.gamespot.com/pc/action/sniperartofvictory/index.html) sniper (http://au.gamespot.com/pc/action/worldwariisnipercalltovictory/index.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gssimilargames&tag=similargames;img;2) game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_sharpshooter) ever made (right down to the hit indicator being represented by a circle that fades the more you move), as I’ve mentioned before the visuals & settings have been stolen from Crysis (although unfortunately they didn’t steal Crysis’ non-linear level design), even the footstep noises & cave ambience were – ironically – stolen from Thief II. They’ve even implemented that whole laptop/intelligence collecting thing from COD4 which, so far, seems to do bugger all. The only thing original I can think of is that you also have a grappling hook to help you get up onto high ledges, but you can only use it at a few scripted sequences throughout the game so it’s pretty much akin to using an elevator. Less in fact; at least an elevator is faster, smoother and you don’t have to hold down a button to move up/down.
Oh wait – Battlefield 2: Special Forces had the grappling hook first, and you could use that pretty much anywhere. No points for City Interactive.

The game switches between clunky CQB and mediocre marksmanship at irregular intervals, and you never do either for long enough to get a good feel for them; once you get used to sniping the game will suddenly switch to CQB mode and vice-versa. The CQB sections of S:GW are terrible; the aiming is poor, the guns sound & feel like airsoft toys and the controls are clunky. Not to mention your allies can barely hit anything, which the enemies seem to take note of so they will fire on you – and only you – whenever you step out from behind a bit of cover. As such you take damage rather easily, but you can also heal yourself just as easily by injecting yourself in the esophagus with a syringe that’s the size & shape of an inflated condom. And medkits are absolutely everywhere, so you never feel challenged at any point. The hit indicator is the same as in most shooters, but instead of only showing up when you get hit it flashes on the screen whenever the enemy opens fire, which can get quite distracting. Most of the CQB scenarios take place at the same time as the sniper parts, meaning you’ll often have to replay sections of the same mission but from a different, more boring perspective. I thought the whole appeal of a ‘sniper game’ was to be able to play as a sniper, what the hell were the developers thinking when they decided to shovel this in?

The sniping is probably the best part of the game, although it’s not as satisfying when all your targets are within the effective range of a Kalashnikov. As with other sniping games, wind & bullet drop off come into account when taking a shot. On Easy-Medium difficulty there is a little red circle on your crosshairs that indicate where the bullet is going to hit, so it’s essentially just like aiming a magnified red dot sight in other games except now the reticule drifts all over the screen. The assisted aiming is disabled on the hardest difficulty, but the game doesn’t train you very well – or at all – on long-range shooting so I can’t imagine playing the game without the assisted aiming turned on. The ballistics aren’t very realistically portrayed either – the AS50 having about a 5-mil drop off at 300m – so forget about using your mil-dot reticule for rangefinding and calculations because it won’t work (I tried). Tyler’s breathing is also a factor when taking the shot; if your heart rate is higher (after running, or indeed moving at all) the scope sways a lot more which makes it harder to aim. At least that’s what the manual says, I didn’t notice any real difference except the sound of Tyler’s breathing – which sounds like he’s breathing through a freaking fire hose no matter what. There was also a feature in the training level of being to penetrate thin materials such as wooden fences & sheet metal to hit enemies in cover, which worked fine in the tutorial but in the actual missions bullets seem to have the hardest time trying to penetrate a flimsy canvas tent. There are only 4 sniper rifles throughout the entire game – all of them semi-automatic – which further supports the idea that Tyler is a designated marksman and not a sniper. You mainly use a suppressed SR-25 and a camouflaged MSG90, with a few Dragunov SVDs scattered here & there for no apparent reason. Despite the AS50 being featured so prominently on the cover art and in screenshots, you only get to use it for one brief section of one level. Reminds me of the flying machine from ACII... Your kit inexplicably changes between missions, even when you haven’t left the area yet. For instance: you start off one mission with an SR-25 as you infiltrate an enemy-controlled lighthouse, and then once you get to the top you’re equipped with an AS50 (with an unrealistic 10-round magazine) for no apparent reason. Where was Tyler keeping that, City Interactive, in his pocket? There’s one particular mission where this gets even more arbitrary; you start off with some C4 in your kit, never needing to use it, and then after a loading screen about halfway through it suddenly disappears and you need to find some more in order to take out some artillery units. I WAS JUST LUGGING AROUND ABOUT HALF A DOZEN KILOS OF C4, WHERE THE HELL DID IT GO!?
About the only thing the game does well is the bullet cam. When you score a headshot the camera occasionally tracks your bullet’s trajectory from the muzzle into the tango’s cranium in glorious slow-motion. Okay it’s been done before in almost every other sniping game, but S:GW has the best bullet cam I’ve seen so far, and it never gets old. Although it’s not perfect; there are a few instances where the bullet cam becomes quite annoying when you have to take down two targets in quick succession, but at least there’s an option to turn it off.

The AI in S:GW is very inconsistent as well; switching from hypersensitive to incredibly dense with no middle ground. At times every bad guy in the South Pacific can deduce your exact position when one of them so much as smell your farts, while at other times soldiers won’t seem to notice you blowing away their captain while he’s giving a lecture right in front of them – even with an unsuppressed weapon. The enemies’ health changes throughout the game as well; at the start of the game they all seem to be made out of rice paper & butter and would only take 1 pistol round to the foot to kill, while later on (during the CQB bits) enemies would take 4 shots to the chest before they would even flinch. The level design is incredibly linear as well, which is especially frustrating in a game such as this. There are loads of scripted moments which guarantee failure and the game keeps pushing you forward relentlessly; I remember one mission where I was supposed to take out a target escaping on a boat while a whole platoon of enemies was rushing up behind me jamming lead up my arse, which made it hard to concentrate on the shot properly and resulted in too many retries for my taste. This is where those bloody claymores would’ve come in handy, if they bothered to give me any for that mission!

The game is plagued with invisible walls and clipping issues, severely limiting exploration and breaking any sense of immersion you might develop. There are even a few instances in the game where you just start losing health for no apparent reason as if you’re being attacked by the Pripyat Poltergeist. I later found out this was the game’s way of saying “Get moving you pillock, double-time!” which is another lazy effort on the developer’s part. There’s also wildlife featured in the game (just like in Crysis) but they don’t seem to do anything. I remember one part where I was crossing a shallow stream and didn’t notice a huge crocodile right in front of me until it got scared and swam away... looks like gynophobic Afghanis aren’t the only ones afraid of Bush. (http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5118/bushj.jpg) The music is downright annoying, consisting of the same 10 second loops which fail to capture the clandestine nature of the designated mark- sorry, “snipers” mission. I turned it off because it became too damn annoying, although I turned it back on about halfway through the game to see if the music had changed: nope, same obnoxious loops. I did it again at the end of the game and was shocked to still hear the same bloody track – it’s almost as if the developers were being annoying on purpose. The campaign is only about 4 hours long, which on reflection I should probably be thankful for. At least that’s what everyone else keeps saying... I wasn’t counting the seconds. I have the patience of a Russian sniper staking out in a 5 star suite, but I couldn’t put up with this game for more than an hour at a time so I lost track of my overall play time.

So in summary: Good bullet cam... that’s about it. Now I love sniping, in fact out of any combat-oriented roles sniping would always be my #1 choice, but this game does so many things wrong that it was a pain to sit through. The only reason I’d recommend buying Designated Marksman: Clumsy Barbarian is if you were in a game shop that dared to sell it and you needed to lose $50 as quickly as possible. But I’d suggest saving your money for a less boring, more fulfilling videogame... like Microsoft Excel.

EDIT: Oh yeah, another thing I forgot to mention; you can also hold your breath for steadier aim which also acts as bullet time by slowing down the game world. Again nothing unique, but it lasts for so long and regenerates so quickly that it might as well be unlimited. It's akin to the slowmo ability in F.E.A.R. so it's way to easy to abuse.

I played, and think that Sniper: Ghost Warrior is the worst game I have ever played!
The only thing good about it is the kill cam, thats it. The one thing that really irked me is how the hell can a AK-47 shoot 500m (and still be accurate) and kill you?!?! Stupid...

can anyone please give me a summary of what this means, I'm really confused http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

"In Hunter mode, one player will take the role of an assassin while other players play as guards. Before the beginning of the mission the player will have to choose his class - there is no information how many classes will be available, but each class will have different animations and weapons. After the player has chosen his class, the radar will show him the area where his target is located and the number of enemy players that are searching for him. After the player has found the location where the victim is hiding they must then locate their target. There aren’t many skins for the NPCs so the player might find several identical people on the same location. That will make his job a lot harder because he should kill only one person, and if the player accidently kills an innocent person he will lose his contract. Therefore, observation is the key to success in this mode."

Edit - I had to make a stupid Cinderella story at skool in 30 mins and then I've had to type it out whilst being x-tremely tired so... I thought I may as well post it here:

Once upon a time there was this hot hobo chick called Guns ‘n Roses™. Her mum had died during childbirth, Guns ‘n Roses™ (Guns for short) had gotten bored of waiting to be born so she’d cut her way out with her knife.

Guns’ dad was very weak but her step-mother was very strong, she was covered in muscles and made Guns do all the easy chores and tried to make Guns really fat, whilst her daughter lifted weights all day long and was only fed good, healthy food.

Guns’ only friends were her father’s AK-47 grenade launcher /w red dot sight and her father’s old, rusty BTR.

It was War-tober and the annual festival of War was coming up. All the young women were tanking out their bodies while all the young men were learning to cook and do chores.

Guns was banned to go to the festival by her step-mother because she was too tank and would win all the awards at the festival and then be able to choose the fattest, smallest dude there.

Days passed by and then her step-mother and step-sister left for the festival, Guns tried to go with them but was not allowed. She got so angry she went into the workout room and put 200kg on each side of the bar and started lifting because she was so agro! Her friend the AK-47 saw her so agro and was pleased, he saw that the veins in here eyes were popping one by one!

He told her that she should go to the festival and suddenly she was dressed in ripped rags with a Rambo style bandanna instead of her posh robes, her belt was a .50 cals machinegun’s bullet clip and her shoes were empty magazines with grenade pins as laces. She’d also been given a crew cut.

Guns drove to the festival in her father’s BTR which suddenly had deep indentations and scorch marks. As she drew near she fired a whole round into the air.

All day she tried out and won every single event, eventually she was up to the weight lifting competition. Guns was at the very front of the queue but behind her was her step-sister!

225kg got put on each end, then 250kg and then 300kg. Her step-mother finally looked at this preposterous person who was obviously cheating because she was beating her daughter. She was very surprised when she recognised the “cheater”. It was Guns! The step-mother, enraged by this decided to pick up the bar and throw it away but it was too heavy. Guns, taking advantage of this picked up the bar herself, kicked the step-mother over and tried to force the bar on her step-mother’s throat but the weights were too big so she simply forced the weights through the earth and into the ground, trapping the step-mother.

2 weeks later Guns had taken over her step-mother and step-sister’s cave and lived there now whilst her step-mother and step-sister were forced to beg her and do all the easy chores and grow fat!

Months later The-Fattest-And-Chubbiest-One-Of-Us-All had heard about this feat and came to her village to seek this amazing person! When he arrived at Guns’ village her asked very nicely whether all the women would please try to lift a total of 600kg.

Guns ‘n Roses™ came out of the cave and did the feat, therefore marrying The-Fattest-And-Chubbiest-One-Of-Us-All and beating up her step-mother and step-sister.

'Dracula dies from a heart attack, right after catching his favorite vampire series in TV. He goes to heaven where he's allowed to choose 3 qualities to have in his next life.
Dracula thinks really hard, and finally makes up his mind. First, he says, "I still want to be able to suck blood. I also want to have wings. Oh, and I want women to want me."
Woosh- he was promptly turned into a sanitary pad.'

well, since sarcasm generally requires a tone of voice, trying to comment sarcasm makes you either look like an idiot, or like your stating the bloody obvious.

The fact that you think sarcasm requires a tone of voice speaks miles about your ability to spot and comprehend it, which makes you the last person to claim sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.
If you do claim that, then you acknowledge that you don't have the intellect to notice a sarcastic remark if its form is soundless.
And if you acknowledge that, then that would elevate sarcasm as a form of wit, since I doubt you're ready to call yourself stupid.

omg! Call of Duty is in my newspaper (The Age's Green Guide)

It says Modern Warfare 2 is the most popular game in the world and 40% of people who have COD games don't play online (r thy haveing sumting rong wit ther rains?)

I know ppl will ask for me to post it so here it is:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Originally posted by The Age (hehe):
CALL OF DUTY PULLS OUT THE BIG GUNS
The team behind trigger-happy Black Ops has its record-setting prequel in its sights.

THE long running Call of Duty video game series received a well-deserved gong last year, when the sixth instalment in the franchise, Modern Warfare 2, became the most successful entertainment launch in history, pushing total sales of the series to more than $US3 billion ($AUD3.27 billion).
No stranger to the franchise, Santa Monica-based developer Treyarch has been handed the daunting task of producing this year's successor in the series - Call of Duty: Black Ops.
"Without having a ton of pressure on us, I don't think we'd be making the kind of game we are" says the game's executive producer, Daniel Suarez.
"Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest-selling game of all time, with tens of thousands of fans still playing it every night. So yeah, we really set the stakes against ourselves but I think that's where you'll see how our offering in multiplayer really exceeds expectations, at least in my mind"
Six months after Black Ops was announced, the team has unveiled its plans for the game's online multiplayer options.
"With each Call of Duty game, from year to year, players tend to expect certain things" Mr Suarez says, "like more maps, new weapons and other cool stuff. So, we can change the way people interact with the game and what types of things players can do differently that are going to make the experience feel bigger and deeper."
Compete, customise and create are the three key pillars Treyarch has used.
Compete, which entails the highly competitive online skirmishes in the game, sees the addition of a Combat Training mode, which Mr Suarez says was a happy accident, after the team's early reasearch revealed as many as 40 per cent of Call of Duty players don't play online because they found it too hard and complicated. The research also found that players wanted to be able to explore maps and try out new weapons without the threat of being set upon by other players.
"This new mode is specially designed to be played by yourself against a bunch of computer-controlled bots, or you can even have some friends join in," Mr Suarez says. "What's also great about Combat Training is players can change the variables to suit, like winding the difficulty setting right up, and then, all of a sudden, it's no longer a mode just for new players but experienced players, too."
Another mode appearing for the first time is the competitive Wager Mode. It includes four game times with strict rules and adding more tension, players must pay to play using the in-game currency, COD Points, which are gained playing standard online, multiplayer games.
An example of these rounds is One in the Chamber, which sees six players start with only one bullet and a pistol. If players miss their first target, they must continue with only a knife. However, each succesful kill earns one extra bullet, making for cat-and-mouse-style tactics.
Mr Suarez says each new idea for Wager Mode had to meet a specific criteria to be considered.
"When we'd sit down to test new ones, if players were sitting there on the edge of their seats, about to throw down their controller, freaking out when the game was done; and if spectators were all screaming and shouting in the last few seconds of the game, then we knew it was going to be perfect for Wager Mode" he says. "If that didn't happen, it simply didn't make the cut."
Treyarch has also overhauled the options for players to customise the look of their in-game character and their weapon load-out, with Black Ops's enhanced create-a-class mode. Clan emblems can be designed from scratch and placed on clothing as well as being carved into the side of weapons. New apperance optons included face paint and a variety of camoflage options. Players can even personalise the crosshair for their crosshair for their weapons, with a skull or smiley face.
Treyarch's third and final pillar of development, create, centres on giving players the chance to record, edit and upload highlight videos of their gaming, using the new Theatre mode, which automatically captures each player's past seven days of matches.
As players go in battle in Black Ops, a new Player Card will not only show everyone their game stats but also a series of videos. "This not only offers players a chance to showcase some of their favourite take-down moments but players can study opponents' videos to see the techniques they use, such as what weapons they prefer and where they camped out in maps," Mr Suarez says.
Whilst Treyarch hasn't revealed every detail about Call of Duty: Black Ops, the new features so far suggest the bar for the series is about to be raised to lofty heights again when the game launches on November 9. http://blackops.digitalwarfare247.com/images/wallpapers/wallpaper-27/digitalwarfare247-27-promo.jpg </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Yeh, I dunno what I've been thinking... I'm converted. lol

I wouldn't mind watching it if they banned snipers from sitting in the crowd and players got an automatic red card for diving. I like watching local football games cause there's plenty harsh challenges and the ref is usually such a fat barsteward he's to far away to see what happened.

scythe we all think you are very special but most UK teams are owned by people in other countries now. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

that's why new rules came in saying they have to use a certain number of English players in the squad (hell even our Scottish keeper is classed as a international player lol)

Well if you're Jewish isn't it mandatory? I don't have a clue, I'm just assuming it's mandatory.

GT5 should be so good, I've actually ordered the expensive edition.

Did you see the footage of the rain and snow trailer?

not yet but the graphics on what I have seen are great, I just hope they put as much work into the physics side.

that rain effect on the window as it comes out of the tunnel is great, but as I said shiny graphics only go so far, you need somewhat realistic handling on the cars.

Well yea...after a hand full of games that I've loved I'm just assuming that they have got the gameplay down right.

It's mandatory if you are traditional and/or religious..

But because I'm hiloni, I can choose to do it or not..

yeah but look at forza, the second one was a decent game, but despite all the bragging by MS about forza 3 being the most realistic simulation game on this gen of consoles it was terrible (glad I waited a month and picked it up for £15 when shops were struggling to sell it)

That is MS and Forza. I have faith in the GT games. I only played the 1st forza and it bored me to death (not literally)
They are pumping the Forza games out just so they can brag that they made 3 in the time it took to make GT5. The quality suffered.
Plus I assume they are trying for a more ****** mainstream crowd with the rewind feature. Its like Forza The Sands of Time

Geez is that the new Mercedes? Looks like it from the lights...what did they do to it?
Is that just a oddly covered up test car or something else
