View Full Version : Getting the most out of a mission

Okay, so I deleted the first career I had and started over. Why? Because I sank about 20 neutral ships and didn't know they would give me negative renown. Oops. Yeah it's in the game manual, but I only read the parts of the manual that I thought I wasn't clear on, because it is in PDF format and for some reason I hate reading long texts online. Give me a real book and I can read for hours http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

So I was thinking I would get an idea of how some of you run a typical mission, because I don't want to start over again from a silly mistake. I want to maximize my tonnage/reknown for each mission, because I'm afraid I'm letting too much time go by and I'll never get to see all the cool toys before the war is over! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Some things I'm not real sure about...

1) Is it wise to go back to base to refuel and rearm and go out to hunt again after you are out of torpedos? Even if the bdU guy tells you to go back home? What if I just don't do a patrol report after I use my last torpedo, then go back and rearm? Then he will never know...right? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

2) After my first mission in 1st Flotilla in 1939, I checked the UBoat Aces chart, and I was in last place with 4,000+ tonnage after sinking three cargo ships! The first place guy had over 16,000 tonnage. How the heck??? He must be driving a VII type, eh?

3) How many missions do you normally have to complete before you have the 2500 reknown to get the type VII(x)? It took me two in my first career, with several neutrals sunk and all.

4) Which upgrades are worth getting...which are not?

5) Do you give medals to your officers, warrant officers, or seamen for maximum gain? I've been giving mostly to WO's.

6) I putt around in "All ahead slow" for most of my long hauls. Any negatives to going so slow?

Thanks in advance for any tips!!

Do the naval academy pass them all and you will start with 1500 renown.

I am sure others will reply with more and better info.

No, the game doesn't work that way. If you don't send a report your tonnage won't be count and if you access another base it will be the same as accessing your homebase, just without being able to upgrade your boat and with the order to go back home instead of patrol orders.

Those upgrades that support your playing stile are worth getting. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You can either save fuel or burn it senseless, if you want to go faster you have to live with the consequences..

Hmm, I didn't know your tonnage didn't count if you don't send a report. Does it count if you make your last report AFTER you refuel/rearm? That's what I'm most curious about http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Or are you saying that you can't go right back out on that same patrol after you re-arm at a base other than your home base? Confusing!

Oh and yes I did the Academy and got my free 1500 reknown. woot!

Thanks for your responses http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If you choose to dock at any port your patrol is over and radioing them after that will give you exactly zero points.

I wasn't even aware that you could refuel/rearm. Can you only do this if you haven't met your objectives yet? Will any port do?

You have to achieve your objectives, radio them to BdU and then you can choose to rearm/fuel in any axis (blue) port.

Sorry for the newbness, but what does BdU stand for?

If you sail back to your home port, doesn't your patrol end?

WRONG SHIPS:

Let's consider real life renoun. At the outbreak of WWII Lieutenant Lemp of U-30 admitted to then Commodore Donitz (Uncle Karl) that it was him that had sunk the passenger-ship Athenia by mistake (he hit th ENTER KEY - no just joking) anyway the upshot was that he was placed under arrest (secretly since Germany still denied it had done the deed) and he remained under arrest for ONE DAY while he was punished. How punished? He was forced to attend ship recognition class for that day. Tough huh?
