IN TWO PARTS:

A) Server Thanks:

I have been flying on this server exclusively for the past three weeks and I must say it is one of the most enjoyable ones available at HL. The settings are great, maps are varied with plenty of g targets and not too-long flights. I hope it stays available for a while longer...

B) Kill stealing rant:

the only thing that spoils the experience are instances where disabled, plummeting aircraft are chased into the ground and shot at by other players thus discrediting the initial attacker...Being a newcomer to the game I find it hard to outmanouver and shoot down opponents and in a few cases when I am successful my kills get stolen by some low-flying opportunists. I think we all can estimate correctly when an airplane is out of comission and on its way to the ground and there are no excuses for diving after it. Staying slightly higher and observing the situation, then diving when the initial attacker disengages and if the damaged plane does not look "finished off" is, I think, the proper thing to do. In case of bombers it's a diff story since they can still make it with a smoking or burning engine.
Hope I don't sound unreasonable, I think there's many great regulars on the server and many of us agree on this point.... Looking forward to flying with you there tonite.

S!

I am glad that you are Enjoying the server. I have every intention of leave a Warclouds Server up and running in HL. The only reason i would take it down is if for some reason the servers started to sit empty. Empty servers = wasted cpu cycles = wasted money. But it doesnt look like there is going to be any reason to not leave one server there.

As to you kill stealing rant. Welcome to the world of online dogfighting. Honestly, i dont pay attention to points or when the game registers a kill. I have my own criteria for what i consider a Kill or a victory over another pilot. And none of them have anything to do with any ingame scoring system.

I play the warcloud every night most times i'm annoyed that it's full and I cant join. The steal kill, just get used to it,besides who cares about points any way.If you can fly out to the battle down a couple, land back at base get back up and repeat.you wont even care.

I play WarCloud alot...Sparx probably knows me as a regular on the old FAST server. In either case...its a great server to have some fun on.

I too really get annoyed by the kill stealing. Disabled and destroyed targets are shot at by your teammates...who often times ram themselves into the ground while chasing the dead fighter. Its hilarious in one moment and saddening in another...

One tip...if a guy on your team has the target. Back off, gain alt, and watch his tail...and watch him just incase he overshoots and you need to splash the target. There's always something to shoot.

Try to think of kill stealing like this: Your the adult lion, bringing the crippled prey for all the cubs to practice on.

This attitude won't improve your score, but it may help you to have more fun. Truth is that the scoring system of IL2 is junk, and has been junk since day 1. Most online players have a personal standard. Plus you become and online "ace" not by wondering: "how many pilots can I shoot down?", but by wondering: "are my skills getting better?"

I also play on Warclouds quite a bit. Great server. S~ Sparx

Very frustrating when you see 5 of your teamates chase a plane that is obviously going to crash while you get your tail shot off.

I won't break an engagment, but I will go out of my way to clear my teamates tail if I won't get shot down before I get there. To all those that do the same, thank you for saving my arse in advance. For those that don't, you should try it sometime, makes the game more fun when you know that there's somebody out there that will help you out when things go sour.

oh yeah one last thing,
The last time I was on, I was shot down in a good fight with p51. I managed to ditch my plane while an LA7 kept shooting at me. The LA7 then strafed me while I sat in the water with a smoking engine till my plane exploded.

I was confused, not only did they kill-steal, but wasted ammo on a doomed plane?

Well, shooting an obviously downed plane, i.e. after the majority of the aircraft is on fire, people are bailing out, tail fell off, wing came off is obviously not a desireable kind of thing to do.

There are times however when it takes more than one aircraft to down a target.

The other nite I was flying on Slammin, I think but I could have been War Clouds Aces also. I got into the no 6 position behind 5 other friendly fighters who were chasing a very well fought BF110-G2. To make a long story short, I worked my way up to position no 1 after the other fighters in front broke off or overshot. I took a few shots into the 110, but as it was smoking heavily I did'nt aim well and only glanced it. Behind me and below at about .3 from the target and .1 or so from me was another friendly who took a shot and nailed the 110. I did'nt know this but stopped shooting when the 110 crew bailed out. I thought I'd actually killed it until I replayed the track later.

I don't think there was any kill stealing involved in that episode, even though the airplane who started the Bf110 smoking and did 75% of the overall damage, did'nt get the kill. This was the very first plane I saw fire on the target. He broke off early because he got hit pretty good by the 110 gunner.

I've been killed by "cripples" that I did not attack in that past because I saw someone shoot at them prevously. Particularly around home base.

I deplore stealing someone's obvious kill(and people do it), but sometimes what you are aware of in "real time" looks different when replayed.

You told us how you weren't afraid to die.
Well then, so long.Don't cry.
Or feel too down.

But at least you tried.

My first time on that server, I was appalled. Aside from paying no attention to the mission objectives (which is normal) and just going at it WWI style, people were so obsessed with points they didn't just chase down finished aircraft, they actually shot each other to get the kill. I remember when I had just taken off, I saw the strangest thing:
A damaged enemy aircraft was coming in to land at our airfield. Sure enough, a friendly comes in a starts strafing him. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a second line of tracers - coming from another friendly aircraft - cuts right through the first friendly and sends him plummeting to his death. The second friendly, apparently in a feeding frenzy, is so tied up with his strafing he crashes right into the landed enemy aircraft.
That day, I played there for 5 more minutes and finally left when a friendly plane tried shooting an enemy plane I was chasing, right through me...

Fortunately, the other times I've been there have been much more enjoyable. Thanks to the guys keeping that server up!

Well, now you know why it's difficult to say with certainity how many kills the real fighter pilots had in WWII. You see a plane smoking, but you think it might be able to land safely, so you hose it down with lead. Could it really have landed in one piece? Who knows? Hartmann probably had more than 352 kills.
