View Full Version : POLL OT: I can't decide - Silver or Black?

Time for a new tower. I've settled (I think http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif) on a ThermalTake Soprano as it has all the features I'm looking for, especially a 'door' on the front (lockable too!) to keep the two Jambo heirs with their sticky fingers and enquiring minds OUT! But I cannot decide on which colour. I know - it's lame, but help me out here my fellow Kaleuns and Skippers to be. Which would you choose?

Here is the spec details for anyone interested (http://www.thermaltake.com/xaserCase/soprano/sopranomenu.htm)

I have to agree with klcarroll on this one, RJ. Go with the black, more hard to see when you're in the middle of a convoy. If you're having problems with the little ones messing around with the computer get one that has a lockable door on the case. Just a suggestion.

Thanks Tambor, they both lock - they're the same model. Just the colour....Black seems to be winning so far!

My case is silver and I love it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

but for that one I think the blac looks better!
I'm partial to all aluminum cases overall though :P

Celeon had the same problem. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Black or Silver.....so he decided that the combination might do it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Taken a few years ago.

Now i have a aluminium keyboard, a window aswell as blue lights too http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

I'd say black on a case. Silver's a bit gaudy, I like darker towers.

I was going to buy a Soprano, but I got a Raidmax Ninja Instead http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif On the color, if you want a jazzy looking pc, black is the way to go. The picture of the black soprano dosnt give it justice, its really awesome to actually see. However, if you want it to look better longer, go silver, those little scratches show up on mirror shine black like that, and it annoys the hell out of me, and with little ones around it would probably be worse for you.

Raidmax Ninja

Are they the ones Alienware use? or are they copies?

Grrbob25
03-12-2007, 03:01 AM
They are copies, but they do look pretty similar. I only got one because it looks like a Alienware case. Not excact, but good enough to fool my friends http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I'd take the silver one.

Less fingerprints, low dust visibility, looks more lightweight.

JUdging by the votes - Looks like it's gonna be black then!?

Before you start forking out any money, are you using anything like a Creative sound card with a front IO bay? There's not a lot of room between the door and the external drive bays so you might have issues with things like protuding knobs.

protuding knobs

*s******s*

Good point though Potoroo, I have the Creative X-Fi Music edition, so no seperate I/O panel.

I say black also RJ, I have seen pics of your "Command Room", and I think black fits your computer desk and room better. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

When I look for PC towers I look for...

All aluminum case - all aluminum everything...
Solid construction...
Easy to open and extract parts...

I don't care for showy shiney plasticky looking things. I'm not really interested in looking at the guts either. It sits under my desk, spins loud fans, and collects lotsa dust.

Generally speaking, my kinda tower is a boring looking silver box and I love em. I decorate it with game stickers and so forth. My current case has absolutley zero plastic. The entire case is a giant heatsink.

Lemme know how that neon looks though...

I've begun to consider liquid cooling just to quiet the thing down a bit though.

Only RJ touches the tower -house rule - guess keeping it clean will be down to me. It comes with it's own cleaning cloth apparently - how handy! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Oh boy. A delivery to Jambo Towers has been successful. It's huge! I've placed my SH3 case next to the box for scale. I've got my fireproof overalls and blow torch out - I'm going in. More later! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Ah you doubters! I've done it. NATO can stand down now. I've just got some cable tidying to do and it's complete.

Here's a few photo's. The blue cold cathode tubes I fitted for extra 'bling' look great - I'll post another photo when it gets dark, then it'll really look good. The Soprano sings! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

But you really need to do something with that old stinky sports shoe on pic one http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

It looks like it emits odors which could lead the UN weapon inspectors directly to your home sooner or later http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

The anti wife/kids lock seems to be a good feature. Just make sure you dont loose those keys !

Good choice of case, i've had mine nearly 1 1/2 years now, its just a cheapened down 'tsunami' using steel instead of Ali, left the 92mm fan on the side disconnected tho as it has good airflow and it keeps it a bit quieter, after this time the only 'deterioration' i've got is the lovely polished front door has dulled down a bit, not complaining i only paid about 45 ($90) for it all that time ago. The spooky thing is Realjambo, is i fitted a new pioneer dv-109 dvd/rw into this case and i never got it to work properly, would burn cd's ok but not dvd's, weird eh? ended up replacing it with an NEC drive that works spot-on.

Realjambo

Thanks scotmal1.

The Soprano comes with 2 120mm fans as standard, one to draw air in and the other to exhaust it. The 92mm on the side I've let runa nd all in all it seems nice and quiet, just a constant dull thrum in the background.
After all the problems with the DVD drive (odd indeed you had a similar issue) have now been solved, I'm really pleased with the case. The blue cold cathode tubes really finish it off in my opinion, even though they didn't come out as well as I'd hoped in the photo's I posted. I'd recommend it if anyone is looking. Just one word of caution...it's huge! and just fits into my computer/work desk at home with millimetres to spare.

I run my exhaust fan at full speed but have my intake fan temperature controlled by the BIOS. That creates a condition inside the case called negative pressure. The principle is that if the exhaust fan is expelling more air than the intake fan is pushing in then that helps ensure the hot air from around the CPU/CPU cooler is drawn out the back instead of circulating around inside the case doing Bad Things.

I'm generally not enthusiastic about side fans (or top fans for that matter). They have been known to make the front to rear air flow worse rather than better if the system isn't designed well. If it were my system I'd be taking temperature readings of the CPU and GPU with the side fan both on and off to see what's happening rather than just leaving it to chance.

Good point, but my front and rear 120mm fans run at the same speed but achieve your effect (i would imagine) as the front fan pulls air in over 3 HDD's slowing the airflow down, then i have an artic cooling VGA cooler 80mm fan and it exhausts staight out the back of the case which takes some more, my 92mm CPU cooling fan and my northbridge fan blow it around inside a bit leaving my PSU twin 80mm fans and my rear 120mm fan to get the rest out! So im definately pushing more out the rear than what i'm sucking in the front (oop's sounds a bit rude fnar fnar!) must work well as i leave my pc on all days i am not working and i have no heat issues.
And yes Realjambo the case is big and also bloody heavy! Cheers.
