Also one of the better WWII war movies of the past 4 or 5 years was the Australian made "Kokoda", its surprisingly accurate for a movie and worth tracking down for anyone that has not seen it ...

Two weeks ago I walked the Kokoda Track from Kokoda to Owers Corner. My Father was part of the 2/16th Btn AIF and took part in fighting withdrawal during September 1942. This trip was a bit of a pilgrimage to see where my father fought 68 years ago.

During our walk we went very close to the area talked about in the video. Probably got within about 500m of the "lost Battle Field".

Unfortunately we ran out of daylight and 500m in this sort of country equates to about an hour each way. Also we didn't have permission from the land owners and without their knowledge we wouldn't have known where to look.

We did get to scramble around the non-lost battle field including a the mountain gun positions above the creek, which is quite well known, and from personal experience is full of stinging nettles!

Although there was (is) still a bit of controversy about the "lost battle field" everyone was very excited about it and needs to be investigated in more depth.

Some of the shots in the video were (in the great journalistic tradition) from other areas of the track close by.

I took this photo at the Japanese Mountain Gun position above Eora Creek. To me it looks like the same pile of ordinance that was shown at about 2.23 in the video in post 1 ( It isn't shown in the photo but the three helmets on poles were there just out of frame you can see the sticks.)

How these soldiers fought in this sort of terrain is beyond me. It is very hard country.

Here is the obligatory picture of me with a Bren Gun at Efogi.

And another one of what I think is a 500lb bomb from a crashed B25 near Myola 1. Notice how the fuse has been made safe by putting a bucket over it!!!! There was very little recognisable about the aircraft.

Here is a B25 "Bar Fly" (still readable on the nose)It's at Popendetta airport on the north cost of Papua New Guinea.

It's hard to see on the photo, but there were two elptical shadows on each side of the cockpit with a rough hole cut through. I think she may have been fitted with gun packs for strafing???

Cheers!

Just found another clip on you tube with an interview if a guy called Brian Freeman about the "lost battle field".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1xR1dY0uyE

This interview tends to blur the line between the battle Field that is fairly well known and the "Lost" battle field that has just been revealed.

Cheers
