I vote for yes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I guess that was the intention of Buchheim for the book and the movie.

In reality the air attack did not happened , U-96 made 3 or 4 additional patrols before it was taken out of active service and the old men became flotilla commander. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ah yes :

What a coincidence - I have just finished the book two days ago! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I think the fact that he has blood coming from his mouth is intended to imply he is haemorrhaging to death (not just a cut on his lip!) so, yes, I believe the Old Man dies at the end. An author would not leave you with a tragic image like that if he wanted you to believe the character survives. The film is the same.

From the first page to the last, Buchheim's relationship and conversations with the Old Man are a key aspect of the book, and this is much stronger in the book than in the film. The Old Man was a great commander and I wanted him to live even more than I did when I watched the film.

The book raised many questions and thoughts in my head as I read it, all of which I noted down and will post on the forum soon.

I saw that video clip a few days ago. Having read the book recently, I think I will enjoy watching the film even more now that I have had the opportunity to get to know the characters and the boat a lot better. The actors chosen for the film are very good representations of the book - especially the Old Man, the Chief, Kriechbaum, the two WO's and of course Johann.

I think the Old Man died yes. Oh the irony that they had survived all that they had, for then to be attacked having made it to port.

I agree with Goose, given that the line (how does it go?) "He opened his mouth as if to speak, but all that came out was.....blood" infers he was mortally wounded.

PS: @ Celeon - How could you not? tsk! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

No problem RJ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

So, U301, what's your view on the Old Man's fate?

Well guys I think he died!
Reading the final chapter one gets the sense that it was written with the inevitable in mind.
I think his luck finally ran out at the dock.
You may disagee.
I hope you enjoyed the book.
KUrtz.

I enjoyed the book much more than I thought I would, after seeing the film many times. The next time I will watch it with a fresh set of eyes and ears, knowing all the extra information on the characters and the boat.

Here's the Goose, of the Green variety http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Sorry RJ, I thought you were quoting me - but the strange thing is I have never uttered those words!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Turning to the thread, I voted for the first one. It sometimes makes good cinema for the hero to die, especially after all the near death experiences they went through. I will be reading Das Boot very soon, once I have finished Wolfgang Luth's bio - a review of that will feature very soon!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

He died.
But in the following book "Die Festung" he is alive again. Maybe it's because the book wasn't planned when "Das Boot" was written. Nevertheless it's quite a good book. You could use it as a tourist guide through certain parts of France http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Can you get this book in English? I've only ever seen it in German.

I believe its a trilogy right ?

There is also a third book called "der Abschied"

Man,.....Buchheim likes to keep the names of his works simple huh ?" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

He Gmuno :

Did you saw this cool docu about U-29 two days ago on RTL ?

Nope, haven't seen it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

"Der Abschied" isn't so good as the other two. It's mostly finishing loose ends.
Just searched amazon.com. Only "Das Boot" was translated and in German the books are a bit tough for non-native speakers.

I believe my next book will be "Das Boot" then. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Im trying to find this docu on the net and there are plenty others avaible but no one has this one. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

It seems that alot of people record all kinds of docus with their tv-cards and put them into file-sharing but i have no luck with that one.

Maybe its just too new.

Its name is "Abgetaucht. Unterwegs mit einem deutschen U-boot" and was made aboard and old type 206, U-29.

This docu is a good proof that the old U-boot Waffe spirit is still alive http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

"Abgetaucht..."? I've already seen it then, i think. It was shown at MDR last year.

So, briefly, what happens in 'Die Festung' and 'Abgetaucht'? I'm intrigued by the titles... 'The Fortress' (is this referring to U-boat pens, or perhaps Germany itself?) and 'Dived' (is that the right translation?)

Just found this - the 'Buchheim Museum der Phantasie' (http://www.buchheimmuseum.de/english/museum.htm). What an amazing building! I remember reading about this in the notes at the end of 'Das Boot'.

I think "Die Festung" is first refered to the town of Brest which got it's status as fortress shortly after D-Day and second to the one thing called "Fortress Europe".
"Abgetaucht" means "Dived", right. It's a doku about a cruise on a german type 206A sub. Quite good, this one. Especially since on-board-dokus on german subs are a bit rare. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

I voted yes. It would have more of an impact if he died rather then just healing in a hospital and returning to duty. As for Celeon's video, I guess that is from the uncut, original version of Das boot, if it is, I'm glad I got the Directors cut. Its shorter yes but its digitally remastered http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif and it sounds great on a Bose 5.1 sound system and 42" plasma http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif (Not to show off or anything http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/halo.gif)
