I was just tooling along in the BE sector when I happened apon a contact going in the opposite
direction. I turned 180 degrees and set off
after the merchant ship I picked up. After 30
minutes I ran into a bunch of destroyers
and wondered what all the fuss was about? Then
I noticed a strange dual smokestack on the
horizon and it was an Escort Carrier (14k tons)
heading right at me! After evading the escort,
I pumped three fish into her but made the big
mistake of getting too close to her. I had the
Destroyer just off my stern throwing charges at
me so I couldn't reverse, so I attempted to go under the Carrier. Big mistake! I figured it
would take at least 10 min. for the Carrier to
sink, but she went down fast and dragged me down with her. Even with full reverse, full
blow on the tanks, my sub imploded at 170
meters and my sinking was for nothing. Bummer!
I was wonderng if anyone else made the same
boneheaded mistake? Thanks!

You should have stayed close to the Escort Carrier but not go under it... The DDs will detect you but can;t get in line to drop DCs because they will colide with the sinking ship, so they start going in circles to get a better approach at you...

I often use sinking ships as cover and DDs get really frustrated of not being able to get into position http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I didn't say it was easy to get away afterwards http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I place my boat even closer than that on the photos, I scrape the ship with my hull and settle down... observing the DDs helps in choosing the right moment to run for it! Ramming the DDs also helps http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

wait until youre hiding next to a sunken ship , and it decides to blow up . i ended up with a swimming pool in my forward torpedo room because of an incident like that. we got it under control , but i tend to wait a few minutes and let them do there thing before i hide next to them. here lately , ive been popping the engine room , or the steering , and hiding by them while theyre stopped on the surface. and when those destroyers start that circling , i fix them up with fish when they come aorund the bow or the stern . their choice.

MEFarnham,
The German sub ace Arnaude de La Periere in WWI was almost dragged to the depths by a merchant he sank and tried to go under. He managed to blow all tanks and go full reverse, and was able to shake loose and escape. You are in good company.

Heinrich505:

Thanks for the info. on the WWI Ace. I almost
made it back to the surface, but I got hung up
on the flight deck and that was all she wrote!
It was a hard lesson to learn since I was 14k
tons richer until my mistake. Thanks again!
