View Full Version : Missing the obvious

I sometimes astound myself with my uncanny ability to spot the obvious after a long period of time.
It has only taken me about 5months to notice that the F4F Wildcat has windows in the floor of the cockpit http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif
I had noticed previously that on external views there was an anomaly under the cockpit with what appeared to be missing panels- when i first installed PF there were a lot of graphic problems including flickering panels etc, so i assumed it was part of that. I didnt realise they were intentional.
While demonstrating the game to my brother i noticed i could see through the floor! I had no idea they had this feature previously, i had thought it was only present on the Ju87.
Does anyone have further info on why the F4F had vision underneath?
Why was it removed?
Was it for increased armour?
Does anyone else have stories of 'missing the bleeding obvious'?

IIRK, the window were for dropping the little 100 lb. bombs the prototype carried. Later deleted. The F2A had a window in the floor as well.

Likewise initial production Corsairs; it was a USN requirement at the time, with the intent of providing an extra bit of visual data to the carrier pilot ("okay, when you see the edge of the carrier deck at a safe distance beneath you, cut power and drop 'er down") since the low speed angle of attack obscured forward vision over the cowl.

It may also have been conceived as an aid to dive bombing or scouting missions...

In any case, it was soon recognized as of little or no value, and removed from later production machines.

cheers

SBD pilots too, only flew it about a dozen times before I noticed the convenient floor window.
