Ive found these pics on the website of a well known left-winger magazine. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

They took all pictures with Merkel making a dumb face and made a series out of it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

OF COURSE... their article was in no way meant to make fun out of her.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

But they really screamed "Do something with us !" to me http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

And i tell you he was lucky on that day.

Merkel has a black belt in Judo and normally her reflexes should have told her to grab his arm and throw him over her shoulder directly on the negotiation table of the G8 summit. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Imagine that photo in the newspapers http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I think it's just an equipment storage box, impact-resistant. The guy is a high-altuitude parachute jumper, not a pilot.

But this is quite a motely assembly of various branch representatives. What's the event? Just a personal instruction for Merkel to show her what forces she has under her command (yea, I know, the German constitution - Grundgesetz - says in peacetime the Secretary of State for Defence is Commander-in-Chief, the Chancellor gets the role only in wartime, transfer of function never happened to date), or at least to tell her how well the defense budget has been spent?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yes he is a parachute jumper.

Thats some sort of equipment box , dont know what might be inside, maybe some radio stuff.

One thing is sure : It looks real funny http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Like someone wants him to fall faster. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

And : Its black.....black box ... get it ? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Yes that was some sort of personal demonstration for Merkel to show her what has been accomplished by now in the transformation process of the german armed forces.

And of course to check what happened to all that precious tax money. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Although that should not be her concern. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Germany´s military budget is among the smallest in NATO.

Even the Netherlands has a higher one although they buy 90 % of their weapons from us ... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Thanks, Celeon!

I think the box contains smaller parts of his ground-fighting equipment (ammo, food, fresh socks, and yes, radio) during the freefall, so that they don't come off during the long, high-speed fall through the air before the chute opens. Shortly before landing he drops the box to the ground (see quick-release rings) so that it doesn't impede his movements during landing. After landing the para dons his ground fighting gear from the box, puts the jumping gear in the box, and then buries the box to conceal his landing place, before moving off to the objective or destination area. Ot that's the theory anyway; never done it myself.

Still, I like the "black box" joke. But my favourite is "These are boots" - "Yes I've seen the movie" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Seems the military got their inspiration from this guy:

Elite special forces troops being dropped behind enemy lines on covert missions are to ditch their traditional parachutes in favour of strap-on stealth wings.

The lightweight carbon fibre mono-wings will allow them to jump from high altitudes and then glide 120 miles or more before landing - making them almost impossible to spot, as their aircraft can avoid flying anywhere near the target.

The technology was demonstrated in spectacular fashion three years ago when Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner - a pioneer of freefall gliding - famously 'flew' across the English Channel, leaping out of an aircraft 30,000ft above Dover and landing safely near Calais 12 minutes later.

Yes he tested the Greif and other gliders. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The Greif is developed exclusively for the german army for now but the u.s special forces have also interest in it.

I heard that the british SAS is still sceptical .... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The manufacturer ESG plans to attach rocket thrusters now to make even higher speed and greater range possible. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

But the idea to produce a normal version for sport parachuters still exists too http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
