Hello all,

I seem to be having some trouble with this game/sim. I have the latest patch and installed the Grey wolf addon.

I was doing a campaign and found a medium merchant. I hit it with all 6 torpedos from my sub (type 2 I think). The ship had an incredible list and the aft section was completely submerged but it never sunk. Now I know some hits in critical areas will 1 shot a ship, but can this ship realistically survive 6 hits? I even unloaded all my flack on it, but as it is not really an anti ship weapon it did nothing.

Any advice? I am still new, but both the game and also the TGW addon say they are friendly to players of all skill levels.

it is true the mod is good to players of all experience, but it is still recommended by everybody who plays it to play the stick game with patch 1.4b for a few patrols before you change to the supermod.

This way, you're able to get used to the way the game works in general.

As for the sinking ship, it will sink, just need patience - the mod simulates flooding, which can take time.

I am assuming you haven't change the realism or any of the settings?
As BaggyG says, you may have jumped in the deep end a little, but just be patient, make sure you are 300m or more away and on a good 90 degree angle, make sure you lock your attack periscope on the target before firing....don't worry or lose patience, you were unlucky with that merchant.......<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Thanks all, I'm glad I was not really doing anything specifically wrong. I am on my 5'th patrol now and have been having much more success.

Just a thought. If you attack a ship do you have to stay in visual contact with it and actually watch it sink if you want to have it credited to you?

I think you need to be within 30 Km to gain credit. Usually if the ship is going to sink and you slip away too far the ship will repair itself and carry on as if you have not attacked it.

I have hung around for up to an hour real time wating for a ship to sink with GW, it can sometimes take that long!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Goose is right; the critical distance is about 30km. And the key to getting "She's going down" (the notification for the sinking awarded) is the permanent submerging of the deck - that's why people have even complained of not getting credits for sinking large warships in ports as they may have settled on the harbour bottom with the deck still showing out of the water. The damage model used by GW and also NYGM (on which GW's damage model is based) models flooding of the hull. So if you have a good hit which causes a big explosion under the waterline, then ships go down quickly; if you punch only some inconsequential holes the ship will take much longer to sink - or it may even remain afloat and you need to damage it more. It is therefore important to pay attention to the damage zones which you see on the recognition manual page once you are within 1000m of the target and within 15 degrees of the ideal firing position. Perhaps play with automatic targeting for a few patrols until you learn what the typical aim points are for each type of ship before enabeling manual targeting.

The flooding as the key also has consequences for the deck gun. The only hits that really count are those below the waterline, so either shoot manually or order the watch officer to "Aim for Waterline". Shooting up the superstructure and the deck cargo has no effect on critical damage for sinking, despite all the flames.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

actually I found 1 ship in my new game that cannot be sunk.

split in half
tip of the bow above water
watching it bob all day

never get sinking credit for it.
getting credit for other ships
but this brittish ship is un-sinkable
or at least un-creditable
GW of course.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
