I have an idea: Download or make your own desert skins for the planes you like, name them like this: "bf109f4desert", "fw190a4desert" or "p40edesert" & voila - we'll all have "default" desert skins with no stress on bandwidth.

This would look good..but only in the desert. I don't really get it... for solving bandwidth problem everyone should have exactly same needed skins in folder. Otherwise it will be bandwidth issue again? No? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

It doesn't matter what skin you have in your folder for each plane as long as it shares the same name on every computer.

WRONG!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

You have to make the skin then share the Cache image of it. It has a universal identy # on it.

Take any skin play it on a server go get its cache image. Then take that same skin with same name and change one pixel to it then play it on the same server, go get its cache image and it will have a new number.

The only way to do this is to share everyones cache images.

Sounds easy enough but its not. We fly skins on the Historia Server all the time. Our cache files are enourmous. But once all shared it runs smooth as silk.

You mean each skin gets a unique identity regardless of file name, right? Which is then altered when downloaded to another machine? My Q is then: Why not share the "unique" cache identity on selected (desert) skins like those that were in the game when we bought it?

No same cache identy for same skin for all machines

Not sure if you can rename any skin with the same identifier code, and have them show correctly.

Lets say I have a blank skin called
Bf109Desert.bmp
its cache # is
-3355690219279824432.bmp

Now I go and add my name or custom markings on the Bf109Desert.bmp
Its netcache # will change to (just an example)
-5533962091728942345.bmp

I have no way of knowing the code. Only 1C does, and the game.

I hope this makes sence now.
If I get a chance this week I'll play with the renameing thing.

I have the exact same skin multiple times in my NetCache, each with a different code number.
I wonder if the code number in part identifys the ISP it came from?
i.e. in different missions, different squad members use the same skin. Different IP = new code number.
Most squad members do not have a static IP. Each IP breeds a "new" skin.

Just a thought.

The following is educated guess work:

Skin names in cache look to be generated by an algorithm released (IIRC) by MS some years ago.

The file names generated by that algorithm are not unique, but the probability of duplicate file names is vanishingly small.

IIRC, the time stamp (ie last save) plays a part in naming the file.
If sombody has copied a file, say to a new directory, then that copy will be sufficiently different to be issued with a new file name.
