1>When targeting a convoy with more than one escort, if you have a clear shot at an escort(has not spotted you) do you take it or are merchants your only objective?

2>Do escorts count as tonnage sunk(I would think yes)?

3>Can a Sub Ping(if so would this not give the enemy
your exact position)? I have heard about active
and passive sonar but sill confused on this one.

4>When under attack is stealth still necessary(since
the escort has made out your position)or do you floor
it and try to out maneuver.

i can kinda answer number 4. i think it is someones choice to try and dive away and go make another run, or you can just fight it out. in my opinion though i would try to fight it becuase the ships have a pretty good idea of where you are. but a skilled seaman might be able to get away without damage. hope im a help.

Thanks theaircobra
I wasn't specific enough
When submerged and getting depthcharged do you go
slow and quiet or fast and noisy(as fast as a sub can
go anyways) your probably right though its up to the
skipper on how best to save his butt http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

well, when theres booming everywhere and you sub is being destroyed i personaly would get the heck outa there. the faster you get out of the depthcharge range the better.

i really hate destroyers so i always try to get at least one,It makes it a whole lot easier having one less bad guy on your back.

As for dodging the escorts i always try to keep changing my position away from the depth charges, alternating between silent running and speed and alternating my depth(the important thing if you keep changing your bearing is not to make 4 rights or 4 lefts in a row),if the sounds are a bit faint i might go to periscope depth and have a shot at the escort, the important thing is getting distance away from the escort. There are 50 men with you in the boat.

The job is to strangle Britain and Russia by sinking merchants. Shooting at destroyers is a waste of torpedoes (especially if you miss) as well as asking for trouble. Of course, if trouble is already heading your way, saving your boat comes before saving torps (which will be lost anyway if you go down).

Depends on the game system. Real life, well a 9000 ton merchant is a lot more than a 1200 ton DD.

Yes and no. Some U.S. subs have active sonar, but u-boats only have passive (hydrophones); I'm not sure about the Type XXI, though. Active sends out a signal, much like radar but using sound. Passive listens to the noises in the water.

When a destroyer has dropped his depth-charges, go to full speed, change course and depth as much as possible. He can't hear you when you are behind him, and the DCs exploding will muffle all sounds for a minute or more. Then go silent again, and see if you lost him. If not, wait until he's on top of you and do it again.

In Aces of the Deep you could tell where he was just by the sound of his engines and pinging. Not so in SHII, hopefully done right in SHIII.
