If you watch the thank you video posted today in celebration of the Assassin's Creed Facebook page reaching 1 million likes ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMiifNwy81s), you'll see that most of the video is shot in front of a wall in Ubisoft's office with a poster with a painting of an Assassin in the background. I took a screenshot where I could see it the clearest and it's intriguing:

I'm pretty sure that we've never seen this art before. I especially checked the art of Ezio that's been seen lately, and this doesn't match. The way the shirt is ruffled at the collar and the edges of the hood with holes in the fabric doesn't match Ezio's clothes from AC2 or ACB.

Then of course there's the strange mask this Assassin is wearing. Since my mind was focused towards the French Revolution being hinted at before, I searched for French Revolution mask and one of the hits that came up was the Man in the Iron Mask. The man in the mask was a real historical figure with lots of mystery, myths and exaggerations of who he really was. He was a prisoner in France during the late 1600s and died while in captivity at the Bastille in 1703, almost 90 years before the French Revolution. One of the myths is that when the Bastille was stormed at the start of the French Revolution, some people found a cell with a skeleton wearing an iron mask. There's enough uncertainty around his identity that I could easily see him being a good character for Assassin's Creed's philosophy of filling in the holes of history.

It's possible this Assassin could be a character from this year's game, linking the story of Ezio and setting the stage for AC3 to showcase the French Revolution. Of course, the mask could just be a way of concealing this artwork to make it even more of a teaser image. It's interesting either way.

That's Ezio, wearing the Golden Mask from AC2 me thinks.

It's definitely similar to the golden mask, but not the same. Even so, the clothes are still something completely new as far as I can tell.

It's Ezio from ACII, I this art is in the collecters edition ACII guide, which I own http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
He's indeed wearing the carnavale mask.

Thanks for clearing that up. As much art as I've seen, it was new to me and looked unusual.

Shame, it's quite a good idea. The story of the man in the Iron Mask is perfect for AC! Maybe one day they'll incorporate him into a game...
He does look VERY cool and assassiny like that! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes. The mystery around him, could have made great Plot lines!

You can see actual game footage with that artwork after Battle for Forli ends and Ezio wakes up with the beard. It's a close shot and it's the same clothing.

As other have said, this is concept art from ACII, it's shown in the Conspiracy Book that comes with the BE.

I too am rather disappointed that this theory was disproved. Would have been a wicked character to pick up on. Maybe you have sparked some ingenious ideas for the Ubi team and they will grab on to this idea. Would be really cool. While many of the supporting characters is the games really existed in history our main character never has, and I for one think it would be brilliant if they were to pick some one who has enough mystery about them that they could use a real person for our main character!
