View Full Version : my manager played AC

Manslayer88

i figured this would be an interesting thread considering that guys from IGN, Gamespot, 1up, etc, dont exactly answer questions. my manager, however, was a skeptic of AC, feeling that it wouldn't match up to everything it promised. he went to the Gamestop conference and it was playable. he waited an hour in line and swore it was worth every second. i asked him dozens of questions about it and figured i would answer any of yours, or, if i didnt already ask it, ask him and give his response. he said the rep gave him an hour because he was "nice to her" so there was plenty of play time involved. anyway, if you think this is pointless go ahead and lock it or whatever. just trying to be a nice guy.

Darn i wish i had a question ummmmm....

Got one: What do you mean "nice to her"?

Lhorkan

Another one: "What company do you work for?"

Manslayer88
09-14-2007, 11:35 AM
1st question - he had a monster energy drink in his pocket and gave it to her because she looked tired. and 2nd - if my manager went to a GAMESTOP conference....where would i be working?

Did he get into any glitches ?
i like my game glitch free lol

Manslayer88
09-14-2007, 11:49 AM
that was one of my first questions. it was glitch free. he spent alot of time exploring and killing random civs to see if it really was a "go anywhere do anything" game

how was the free running?

Manslayer88
09-14-2007, 12:05 PM
he said the free running was simple and addictive. said he wanted to just keep freerunning. he also said it was better free roaming than any other sandbox game he ever played

What he said about the fighting

Manslayer88
09-14-2007, 12:17 PM
he said it was a bit over simplistic. while you could get a kill here and there by pure offense, it was safer and better to play defensively with counters. i think i could live with that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Any info into the whole future scifi twist? (If so, please don't give it all away)

Manslayer88
09-14-2007, 09:49 PM
okay, first question: while my manager DID die, he said it took alot of hits, but he never took one directly in combat (IE: cheap shots as he was running away), so the "one hit in battle" rule may still apply. i asked about the game over screen and he said it wasnt special, just went back to the demo's main menu. second question: the conference was all last week. all Gamestop store managers are invited and this year it was in Vegas (sweeeeet). they get alot of promotional stuff, like mine got Halo 3 and Zelda Phantom Hourglass, (both to be shipped to our store seperately from the regular shipments...these addressed to him). do a google search for the gamestop conference or just watch G4 seeing as how ATOS has been covering it all week. third question: there were no sidequests to speak of, but when he didn't have anyone hunting him down he was able to pickpocket certain people (no idea yet why he couldnt pickpocket anyone). fourth: nothing on the sci fi twist. but he said that when you're playing and you see the targeting system at work, it's almost mesmerizing....(sounds like he might have been on acid LOL).

EDIT: most importantly he said it was a new demo where your target was traveling through the city on horseback with accompanying soldiers on foot and some on horseback as well. BAD...FREAKING...AZZ!!!

GuStick93

was the civilians AI as good as jade raymond claims ? like ppl throwing rocks at you and **** ?

Manslayer88
09-15-2007, 02:16 AM
because he goofed around and killed some random people in the city, the civs warned the target and swarmed between Altair and the target so the baddie could get away. said it was far more "detailed" (i think the word he meant was "dynamic" lol). overall he was pleased with how the AI reacted. he said every now and then while jumping from roof to roof he would notice someone below who would spot him just for a sec. so i guess civs aren't like dogs...they CAN look up (i hope SOME of you got that joke...)

can you swim?

i know they said no, but i want to be sure... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Manslayer88
09-15-2007, 02:59 AM
he said the demo he played was strictly daylight. so still no news on a day/night cycle. night guys, keep posting questions and tomorrow night i'll talk more about it with him at work and respond with answers to any questions. (and if anyone is clever enough to ask a question i didn't think of, i'll call him up after work and ask. arent i a nice guy?)

EDIT: oops sorry i missed the swimming question. my bad... he said he didn't see any water to swim in so it's still unknown.

How was the targeting system, and whats up with the glowing outlines?

gorilla325
09-15-2007, 08:50 PM
can you jump on the spot, where's there's nothing to grab?

how's the camera control? in tight place? how much control do we have over camera?

when you are on the horse back, can you fight?

can you jump while horseback riding? how about jump away from a running horse?

could you scale the city wall?

anything news about how would we advance through the whole game?

can you pick up your enemy's weapon and use it?
is there an RPG element that Altair would get stronger, faster?

how much blood can we see when fighting?

do the locals speak their native tongue, or english? lol

i saw Altair threw daggers in the trailer, or so i remembered, can you do that in the game? throwing anything in the game?

can you really use crossbow in the game?
and what's the targeting system?

can we use fire in the game? like burn our enemy. ok...now that sounds like hitman...http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

did you not suppose to see a lot of virgin girls when altair got killed? lol

Manslayer88
09-15-2007, 09:40 PM
wow, my feelings are a little hurt. if you dont believe me, hell go look at the gamefaqs forum where i started a thread just like this to spread the word, another gamestop manager who was actually at the conference backed up the feedback i got from my manager. i'll even give a link.
http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=9...opic=38227746&page=1 (http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=930278&topic=38227746&page=1)

continuing with helping out the average guy:
1st: he said he didn't meet any walls he couldn't climb; however, there were a couple buildings he found that could only be climbed from a certain side.
2nd: he said the targeting was cool, and it didn't bother him except for the fact that it seemed very surreal and "memorized" him. i think he had too much to drink lol.
ALL QUESTIONS FROM GORILLA: (good questions, i had to actually call and ask about alot cuz i hadnt thought about them)
if there's nothing to grab when you make a jump he will plant his hands and feet into the wall to keep from smashing into it, and then drop. he said there wasnt anything except the ground below so he doesnt know if there had been anything to grab below if he might have been able to. the camera is much like splinter cell, except it moves slower, so i guess the correct word is a tighter camera. he didnt ride a horse so he doesnt know about the horse combat or anything involved with the horse. he never came across any "city wall" or anything else for that matter that could be considered a boundry. cant pick up other weapons, and no RPG element was shown in the demo. he said there was some blood, only enough to warrant an M rating, but barely. "satisfying but not overdone" as he put it. the civs and guards he pissed off spoke english. if you choose your throwing daggers and target the enemy and press X is the only throwing weapon you can have (at least in the demo). there was no crossbow in the demo. the targeting system was, again, the computer code-like light that surrounds NPCs. and noooo word of fire (he asked me if i was on drugs when i asked him that lol). and nope. no virgin girls http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif just took him straight back to the "Assassin's Creed Demo" title screen/main menu.

i can understand you guys being skeptical, but don't call me an outright liar when all it friggin takes is calling up a gamestop, talking to the store manager (who more than likely took the business related vacation to vegas), see if they played AC, and ask them for THEIR take on it. i'm not typically a nice person, i work 3 jobs and Gamestop is the only one i enjoy (for the least pay as well). so the fact that i'm eager to share information to those who want it the most should make me somewhat of a friend, right? it's not nice to call your friend a liar http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

But it'd be stupid to blindly trust someone who has no proofhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif So you should understand their suspicion.

I'm not clear about the controls yet, you have the buttons and the right shoulder button and the stick, but are there others? I heard about the other shoulder button being used as the oposite of the right one, a full control map would be nice http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And that bar in the corner, I know what the anonemity icon does, but what is the bar itsself? there was something for health and something for being able to defend...

I got a question, when you're jumping off big towers your shadow is saposed to look like an eagle, or some kind of bird. Did he notice anything like that?

Manslayer88
09-16-2007, 03:54 PM
ok, first off, Assassin_07, what proof, other than my manager's word, could i have offered? i'm not going to list his phone number or something ya know lol. anyways, back to the Q's.
CONTROLS: ok, these are the 360 controls as my manager described to me. X is your overall attack button (or "weapon hand" button). A is the feet/blend button. when freerunning (by holding A and right trigger) it controls your jumping, "sprinting" (which is diff from running, if you hold right trigger only you jog/run, hold A and you basically sprint and can't turn as sharply), and running up walls. when just walking around, like near a bench, hay, monks, etc, it's your magic blend button. B is your off hand, or "free hand." used for gently pushing people, letting go of a wall or ledge, or grabbing an NPC (in conjunction with the right trigger). y is as far as we know, used for the "eagle vision" (previously called "intuition"), and apparantly if you're above ground level it will put you in first person view in this view mode. he said he didn't use the bumpers for anything. the D pad was for weapon selection. from his recollection down was for fists, right was for sword, left was the short sword, and up was the hidden blade. to throw the daggers all you had to do was target a guy from a distance (with left trigger) and press X.
i think that about sums it up http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

to answer the rumble question, every time he hoisted himself higher, the controller rumbled lightly. if he made a drop in elevation (jumping to the ground, or a rooftop lower than where he was at) hit would rumble violently. also would rumble when he blocked or countered. as for the hood question (and it's not stupid cuz i asked it too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) sadly the hood did not come off in the demo. anymore questions you guys have just post them and i'll reply asap.

But slayer, people are (well i guess were) sceptic because we've had quite a few fa-*cough*s come in saying that they already owned the game or something rediculous like that, but this sounds so sweet!

For the "free roam" aspect; I am a veteran of City of Heroes,, I suspect you may have played that also. I wondered how AC compares to CoH's, in regards to their common features

...Let me try to spell this out.

Well CoH is an MMO, a bad one.

AC is an action game.

While they both have freeroaming, you can't fly in AC, or Jump rediculous heights or use super human speed.

You can how ever climb anything and interact with tons of things, the AI isn't nearly as bad as CoH's and the generic character designs you see 1424124124214 times when playing CoH...well lets just say AC won't give you that feeling quite so harshly.

if there's nothing to grab when you make a jump he will plant his hands and feet into the wall to keep from smashing into it, and then drop. he said there wasnt anything except the ground below so he doesnt know if there had been anything to grab below if he might have been able to. the camera is much like splinter cell, except it moves slower, so i guess the correct word is a tighter camera. he didnt ride a horse so he doesnt know about the horse combat or anything involved with the horse. he never came across any "city wall" or anything else for that matter that could be considered a boundry. cant pick up other weapons, and no RPG element was shown in the demo. he said there was some blood, only enough to warrant an M rating, but barely. "satisfying but not overdone" as he put it. the civs and guards he pissed off spoke english. if you choose your throwing daggers and target the enemy and press X is the only throwing weapon you can have (at least in the demo). there was no crossbow in the demo. the targeting system was, again, the computer code-like light that surrounds NPCs. and noooo word of fire (he asked me if i was on drugs when i asked him that lol). and nope. no virgin girls http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif just took him straight back to the "Assassin's Creed Demo" title screen/main menu.

okay i've been working alot so sorry i havent been here to answer. firstly: he played it on 360. no other version was available to demo. in fact, he mentioned that ALL the demos at the convention were 360 only (lil weird me thinks). secondly, he said he didnt notice anything about Altair's sprinting ability being worn out. also, i nor my manager have played City of Heroes, so i cant say if it's anything like it or not. sorry. he chose NOT to do the leap of faith (he wanted to REALLY test and see if he could do things his way) but i assume just pressing A and a direction would do it. he didnt bother trying to use the hidden blade in battle...HOWEVER, it was still available in the weapon menu during battle...so it may be usable

IMPORTANT NOTE!!!!!
at work we just got some Assassin's Creed thick lanyards (if thats how it's spelled) that have a paper advertising a FREE Assassin's Creed Art Book (to be received at pickup) when you reserve. Also, start seeing if they have any extras of the lanyards http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif i gave one out to a regular customer who i hooked on AC. he also spent a good couple hours talking to my manager about it LOL. anyways, thought i'd fill you guys (and girls) in on that. keep up the Q's and i'll dish out the A's.

thanks for the answers, it's gunna be sweet assassinating random people and then just walking away......

but, can you use the crossbow at will?(wich i wouldn't doubt,) and if so, does it have a conventional crosshair aimer?

and, also ... those AC art books, and the lanyards, and the ubisoft mixtape... are those still avalible? And, if they are... are all gamestops carrying them, and, how much do those cost?

once again, thanks for answering all these questions.

first off, he received nothing special for pickpocketing, probably because in the demo all the info had already been gathered. and secondly, for the last time, there was NO crossbow. probably won't even be in the game since we've only seen it once in all 4 years of development. all Gamestops SHOULD be doing the art books (to be picked up WITH the game at release...no earlier) for those who reserve it. also, the mix tape and lanyards (i don't even think i'm spelling that right) are FREE promotional merchandise. however i can imagine that they wouldn't give them out if you didn't reserve. just call up your local store and ask http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

For some reason, the manager at EB Games seems to like throwing things away. He threw away the mix tape and probably the lanyards, too (according to the assistant manager). So I tried at Gamestop. They said they hadn't received a Ubisoft mix tape in a long time, and the manager there said the AC lanyards (which they haven't received) were supposed to be for the employees only. My hopes were raised and dashed within a matter of minutes.

Some guys from the 1191 A.D. site were also talking about the preorder merchandise (Tin and lithographs). GS said that they didn't have that stuff in though. They did say that they had the Mix tape DVD when I talked about that (They gave me one. I'm friends with this guy and the manager. They're awesome! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif).

I told them that several people said that they got these things and he said that he'd keep an eye out for them and would check to see if they're going to get anything soon. He said as big a game as it is, he wouldn't be surprised if they got anything like that stuff in.

So, I'm gonna talk to the manager when he gets in about this stuff. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If I can I'll try and get the footage on my comp and show you guys. One of the other games on there is SP:conviction. I still have to watch it myself, but I'll see if I can get it for you guys to watch too. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

i wish i had the right software to rip from the 1st mix tape from february. it has small details conveyed like a meeting to decide things like where Altair will pull his throwing knives from; and Patrice says he should throw from the stash at his hip and then when he's out, throw the stash on his shoulder. its the details that make this game absolutely stunning.

How was the AI? On one of the trailers i thought the guards were running around like idiots ... was it ok?

What was the crowd pushing like? Did he actually touch the people? Or was it a few inches off?

What were the graphics like (Not sure if asked)? Room for improvment? Also is it like Shadow of the Collosus? With it being blurry in the distance?

What was the Atsmophere like? Did ur manager feel like he was there? People talking to each other ... markets etc?

Ok let me just make something clear :P

The Fighting : You can take several blows as you have seen in the demo's but you can ONLY take 1 Deadly/Vital blow.. Thats what Jade Raymond said in a interview.
The horse fighting : Yes you can fight when u are on a horse.. Also seen on a video.

You don't got a lifebar. The bar you see at the top left corner is you'r ''block''/defensive'' bar she's said.. As i said. You can take several blows against you but you can only take one Deadly/Vital blow before you're down.

Hope that clearled up some people's mind.

You know, it's like saying:

"You don't get a lifebar. Instead you get 100 block points. You can take several hits, but when you lose 99 block points, one blow takes you down".

It just doesn't make sense. If you can take as many blows as the defense bar indicates, it still sucks.

this isn't an official reply, but it might help...

1.) I think I know the video your on about, but remember that the game has just gone through a alpha test and a beta test, and is now being debugged... Patrice has been saying how things have been updated and tweaked so I think the AI was improved as well

2.)I've noticed that sometimes it seems as if Alty isn't actually touching them, but again, that might have been an earlier video and I've definately seen some videos where there is proper touching !

3.)The graphics are looking quite top notch at the moment, not the best graphics evar!!1! But definately good, with good draw distance and nice character models, I'm not sure on the blur though...

4.) From the videos, there is alot of 'buzz' as you here - usually incoherent - chat in the background, I haven't seen any NPCs having a chat, but I wouldn't say that its impossible, yes there are markets too... altogether I think its a pretty emersive experience...
