The most important of the list is the P-51 and as well as engine sounds, I'm hoping for the dive sound of the 'whistlling death'.

Although I do have some audio of the above planes, trying to track down 'clean' audio is very difficult.

Has anyone in the past come across any good .wav samples or CD samples of the above planes?

Most of the audio I find is good, but has an airshow commentator waffling away in the background.

Possibly firing up the PC for one more 'out of retirement' movie, but audio is so important, that any help is appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read this anyway, hope you can help, cheers, MP.

I got some good whistling death at Legends this year, but like you the commentators insist on waffling.

Oblivious it seems to the fact that 99.9% of the people are there for the sites and sounds of the AC.

I'll trawl though my video again, but the commentator is still there faintly on one channel.
700 directional mike and I stood near a PA speaker http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Got some of Sally B too, I'll work out how to extract the audio and upload it somewhere for you, if you play with the balance you may get something of use.

You should try the Checkflight P-51 Audio CD.

http://www.oldplanes.com/sounds.htm

I have their Bf-109 CD and it is very well recorded. I don't know if there is any whistling on the P-51 CD though.

S!

Mauld that's a great one. I have been subscribed to your Youtube stuff for a while but I somehow missed that one.

Does anyone know why exactly it produces that whine? What part of the engine does that?

I thought it was the supercharger whine but i have been informed that it is the air flowing over the gun ports just like blowing over the top of a bottle.

Yes that's correct, the sound is like air passing over the top of a bottle, and what you hear is air passing over the gun barrels.

Cheers, MP.

If you want it MP I have more P51 whistling, without crowd/commentator.

And Sally 'B' take off and fly bys too, I will have the audio extracted next week.

Yes please B16Enk, the more choice I have, the better the end result.

Thanks for your time and effort, cheers, MP.

About 10 years ago I ordered a cd called Aero Sounds. Occasionally I bore my wife and annoy the neighours by playing it. The inlay of the cd says the following:

Track 1: start and warming-up of B-25's, P-38's and a F4U. You'll also hear a mustang flyby.
Track 2: Bristol F2B start and warm-up.
Track 3: Sopwith Triplane and Sopwith Pup
Track 4: Bomb-run by a LGV C7 followed by Sopwith Triplane.
Track 5: Vickers FB27 Vimy start-up and taxi/Bristol F2B flyby.
Track 6: Hawker Hind (RR Kestrel)take off and flying.
Track 7: Messerschmidt Bf109G start and warm-up. Mosquito DH90 take-off and again Bf109
Track 8: Boeing B17 start-up 2 engines, next 5 B17's taxi and shut down.
Track 9: Boeing B17 (P&W Cyclone)
Track 10: Hawker Hurricane and Spitfire start and taxi (RR Merlin) then flyby. Also Bristol Beaufighter (Mercury's).
Track 11: Spitfires and Mosquito's (Merlin & Griffon's) take off and flyby
Track 12: More Spitfires (Merlin & Griffon's).
Track 13: Curtiss P40 Kittyhawk start-up (Alison).
Track 14: Warbird formation. Flyby comprimising, B17's, B25's, Msquito, Blenheim, P40, AT-6 Harvard, Spitfires, Mustangs, Corsairs, Hellcat, Hurricane and PBY-5 Catalina. Next flyby group compromises Mustangs, Spitfires, B25's and Mosquito's followed by the take-offs by Grumman F7F Tigercat, FM-2 Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, Douglas AD-4 Skyraiders, Vought F4U Corsair and a Fiat GS9 (?)
Track 15: Start of a Dewoitine D27 and some flyby's.
Track 16 to track 23 contains various jets like the MiG 15, Hawker Hunter, AVRO Vulcan, Panavia Tornado IDS, Sukhoi SU-27 Flanker and some helicopters.

I'm not sure how much this can help you but you figure it out http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

About the whistling-- wouldn't other planes with MGs in the same configuration in the wings, same barrels, etc... make the same sound?

I read elsewhere that it might be cause by the big scoop under the belly. What do you all think about that?

Anyone have a link of an F4U whistling? I can't really find a good one on YouTube.

I have several of these CD's http://www.aircraftrecords.com/ . No talking just the high fidelity recordings of aircraft engines running. Some are recorded from inside the aircraft including the B-17. Highly recommended.

These look very useful, but the cost of shipping to the UK nearly doubles the price!

Is there a UK distributor, or a downloadable version anywhere?

Can't seem to find one.

Thanks, MP.

I thought it would be easy to find a UK distributor http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif. I've not found a single one so far. How about this one from the Imperial War Museum? http://www.iwmshop.org.uk/index.html?pageTitle=Sounds_o...prodID=9100&brandID= (http://www.iwmshop.org.uk/index.html?pageTitle=Sounds_of_Duxford_CD&pageDesc=Anyone_who_loves_aeroplanes_will_enjoy_th is_stunning_collection_of_digital_recordings_of_hi storic_wa&action=detail&maincatID=0&catID=&prodID=9100&brandID=) You might be able to find the Aircraft Records label in another museum gift shop.
