Hi!

After selling some of my profile drawings I had some cash on my paypal account that I can't be bothered to transfer to my bankaccount. Having just moved I thought it would be good idea to buy some bob dylan posters and Saburo Sakai's book. However to my amazement I can't pay with paypal over on amazon.com. Does any know a site where you can pay with paypal? Don't have a creditcard and I don't really want one, know myself to good for that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Awesome book! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gifBest part in my opinion is the look into pre-war Japanese Naval air force training methods, and the exeptionally high quality of Japanese pilots.

I should think you can get a copy at Amazon. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I did a book report on "Samurai" when I was in grade school and enjoyed the book a lot...but I have heard a lot of negative things about it in resent years and have never re-visited it.

Does anyone know how accurate the book is?

It does contain some errors. For example, aviation author Henry Sakaida interviewed Sakai:

"My subsequent in depth research into Sakai's records confirmed the inaccuracy of Samurai, which was written by Martin Caidin through notes via Fred Saito, who had interviewed Sakai. A case in point: According to Samurai, Sakai took up a Zero on the eve of the surrender and shot down a B-29 at night. When I first queried him about this, I was surprised to hear from Sakai that this episode never took place! He was just as surprised about this myth as I was!

"It might surprise the reader to learn that, despite the millions of copies of Samurai being sold since its publication in 1957, Sakai has never received a penny in royalties due to him."

and:

Winged Samurai: Saburo Sakai and the Zero Fighter Pilots

"Another point of interest is Sakai's debunking certain myths that have cropped up since the end of the War, such as his famed "last combat". In "Samurai!" it is written that Sakai and a certain "Jiro Kawachi" took off in their Zeros and at night, attacked and brought down a B-29. Not so, says Sakai. "There was no Jiro Kowachi". He says he and several others took off in the daytime and attacked and exchanged fire with a B-32 Dominator "Hobo Queen" but failed to shoot it down. This and several other inaccuracies are corrected."

The part where he's surrounded by "dozens of Hellcats" off of Iwo Jima is juiced for drama also. Sakai's entire squadron was with him and it was the F6F's that were outnumbered. Sakai did successfully evade several however, may have shot down one Hellcat, and got away without a scratch when the Grummans broke off the engagement as the fight got within range of Iwo AAA.

Caidin never paid Sakai. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Still recommend this one, even if the language is a bit "crude"http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
