View Full Version : Quiz Time!! Friend or Foe??

Hello Everyone,
Yes, while we are all waiting very patiently for the patch, I thought it would be fun to have a bit of a quiz.

Towards the end of the war, the Germans exported one of their most numerous versions of the Bf-109 made, the G-6. It was also during this time that many of the Axis countries changed over to the Allied side of the fighting and brought their Bf-109G6€s with them. As they added their new national insignias to their Messerschmitts, it may have caused a bit of confusion as to which side they were on! Who would you shoot at? Can you match the early insignias on the left column (1-6) with the later national colors on the right (A-G)? Also, one of the early ones on the left split into two versions with one remaining on the Axis and the other going to the Allieds. Extra credit if you can identify and tell the story about the insignia on aircraft €œZ€.

Hmmm I think this is it.

1 changed to G Hungary
2 changed to E, Croatia - Yugoslavia
3 changed to A Finland
4 changed to B Italy ANR (Axis) and E Italy Cobelligerent Air Fiorce
5 Changed to C Romania
6 Changed to D Slovakia

I think Z is Slovenian

Edit: I think I am wrong about Z

I think I remember that Z is really a Russian group of traitors ROA or something like that.

I would love if those changed insignia would make theyr way in to the game. This way I could play with Romanian insignia in the red lines too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I feel like hijacking, but
I just checked from one book, that the new insignia was officially taken in to use the 1st of April 1945 (April's fools day http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
The hostilities were officially over, but there was a minor group of Germans in a very small area in the North of Lappland. They mover to Norway by the end of the April.
So I think all the airwarware against the Germans by the Finns were done with the old insignia and at least mostly with German planes.
The first demands by the Russians to change the insignia came in October or November of 1944.

I'll mainly comment on the two difficult ones: The AC "Z" is carrying the insignia of POA (en "ROA"), Russkaya Osvoboditelnaya Armiya or "Russian Liberation Army" composed of Russian pilots flying on the German side. The insignia is the blue Andreas Cross on a white shield. The depicted aircraft should be one of the allegedly 16 Bf 109 G10 of Jagdstaffel 5 "Kazakov" April/May 1945, based at Deutsch Brod in the Reichs Protectorat Bohemia and Moravia.
Ref: "In The Skies of Europe" by Hans Werner Neulen.
Aircraft "G" is marked with the roundel used by the Bulgarian AF after siding with the Soviet Union September 9, 1944.
Besides the two above:
Regarding aircraft "A". Yes, it is the FAF markings used after the Continuation War, which ended with the truce on September 4, 1944. Yellow eastern front markings was to be removed within 10 days from all aircraft. The roundels replaced the 'hakaristi' officially as from April 1, 1945, after the Soviet led allied supervision commission demanded a change. Soon a 60 year anniversary!
102 out of 162 Me 109 remained in FAF after the armistice and got the new roundels, which were less offensive to the winning powers than the traditonal blue 'Hakaristi', which some could not disguish from the controversial Nazi German 'Swastika'symbol.

Hi Zaelu,
With the help of Aces' Artwork tools Aces' Artwork Downloads (http://www.leigh-kemp.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/MATfiles.htm)(I used his designs as templates for my profiles), you can apply User Defined insignias to the aircraft in the flightsim... like I did below:

It is a super cool utility that really makes the game a lot of fun! Also, you can always make a skin with the insignia that you want... other people can explain it better to you than me! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Good luck and cheers! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
