They are Nieuport-11's. One can tell by the flat side fuselage to the back of the cowling and the chick cowling blending the round cowling into the flat-sided fuselage.

Where did you find this picture? Are they for the new movie "Flyboys"?

They also did it in real life! ..... in a dive they would shed the lower wings do to torsional loading, some pilots did make it home flying only with the top wing .... some did not ... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Yes they are .. Miller does excellent work. The Nieuport he has detailed out is a Model-17 not a Model-11 as in the picture above.
