View Full Version : Ubi_Wuzzi...how did you get your job?

Hey, this isn't directly related to Red Steel 2, but I've been following this game for awhile and it's a question I've been wanting to ask...

Ubi_Wuzzi, how did you get your job as Creative Director? Most jobs in the Game Development sector make sense on how to aquire them. A 3d Artist creates a portfolio, builds it up, starts on small games and then gets hired by a larger company. A programmer probably does the same.

But a creative director...how do you prove you can direct creativly? Judging by the game and watching the developer diaries, it seems fairly obvious that you are pretty dern good at it, mostly by just hearing the way you talk about the game, art, and controls.

How would you go about getting this kind of job? Did you start out as an artist or programmer, and work your way towards this position? I'm really curious, because this seems like one of the best jobs on the planet.

Anyways, mostly asking it here because I'm really impressed with the direction of this game. The whole Samurai Western setting really blows me away. This looks like one of those rare games where everything - graphics, gameplay, design- all sort of come together.

Thanks in advance, hope you find some time to respond.

And add multiplayer. Sometime.

I'm almost completely sure that Ubi_Wuzzi isn't Jason Vandenberghe, the creative director of the game. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Edit: I actually spelled his last name right, I went to go check afterwards. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Oh...I just assumed because he posted the answers to the community from Jason V that it was him. On further inspection, this doesn't seem to be true.

Well, if Wuzzi sees this, I suppose he could pass it on as a question to him, if it's not too much trouble.

I confirm that I am not Jason http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif but I can pass your question on to him. I'm actually quite interested in the answer too !

Hello all,

Here is the answer from Jason to your question.
I'm sure that will encourage you in this way.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Pixie dust and happy thoughts!

No, kidding. Actually, it was pixie dust, happy thoughts, and a lot of luck. I’ll keep this quick (for me):

I grew up around computers (which was, if you can believe it, actually rare in them thar Dark Ages), and my entire family loved media of all kinds. Thus, I was immersed in electronics and entertainment of all sorts for the whole of my “character creation” phase.

This was before electronics and entertainment merged into Electronic Entertainment, so I (not seeing the future with clarity) got a job as a programmer at an actuarial firm, and went to college to learn how to direct for film and theater. Silly me – I should have just gotten a game degree, but they didn’t exist back then, see.

So, I came into the game industry as a programmer. Bizarrely, having been a huge gamer, dungeon master, and general geek (as well as having a serious affection for LEGO) seems to prepared me to solve game design problems with a certain aplomb, and so over a series of years in the industry I sort of drifted into game design. I spent a lot of time making movie games for other gigantic game companies, and now, twelve years later, I get to make actual games at Ubisoft.

I think the leap to Creative Director came primarily from my utter inability to succeed at anything else. It’s most likely an example of the Peter Principle in action: I’ve been promoted because they couldn’t figure out what else to do with me. Ironically, after all these years of being told I should be less of a pain in the ***, I now am actually required to be one. It’s in my job description now.

In short: Huge Nerd -&gt; Programmer -&gt; Game Programmer -&gt; Producer -&gt; Designer -&gt; Lead Designer -&gt; Creative Director. And I complained about it the whole way. Ironic, no?

Thank you very very much for answering personally, Mr. Vandenberghe! It wasn't my question, but it's great to see you reach out to the community like that, even farther than the Q&A is already reaching. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif
