I have been playing Zekes vs wildcats lately and have had a tough time attacking the A-20 in a Zero 21

It seems when I get within .5km of the thing, that I am injured immedately and dead the next. I am barely able to get a few burst in before I am killed. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

I always knew that hand held guns in IL2 were overdone, but... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif historically, I don't believe I heard this type being a problem.

Any advice for attacking bombers in general?

thanks

A20 vs Zeke is very difficult, the A20 is alot faster than the zeke, so you'll have to spend alot of time in range of the gunners to attack one. I usually try for a head-on, but don't try to catch one from six o'clock - that's just a free kill for the A20 gunners.

Slashing vertical attacks from above.
or head on with large calibre weapons
Not good in a Zeke v A-20
good luck

Forgot to mention: the A-20s are flying "down in the weeds"... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

The Zero is a terrible aircraft for bomber attack because its just not well protected and against a fast bomber like the A-20 its not really fast enough for a high speed overtake like a FW190 might get.

As Jolly also suggests you're required to make vertical slashing attacks against a plane like the A-20. This gives you off axis angle (you need good deflection shooting) as well as the speed in the dive to make the time that the gunner has on you as limited as possible. The ventral gunner has less visibility and range of motion but if you sit behind a A-20 it will pummel you.

To be honest its not really the AI in this case. I've flown the A-20 allot online and its rear guns I almost always man when under attack. The AI is not very good at prioritizing a target or leading a target like a human is and I'm always more deadly than the AI gunner is. The AI gunner can get you in inhuman displays of gunnery accuracy or spend the next 30 seconds firing into empty sky.

I've several times been told how lucky I was that the AI got off some impossible shot...and I will often reply that it wasn't the AI that got them but me and my mouse http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

But back to the A-20...its effective in its role largely because it is fast. Its a fast bomber and its relatively streamlined. Its also quite agile and maneuverable for a plane of its size. A Zero is somewhat outmatched here...but the best option is to come in fast at an angle and try and concentrate your shots on the long wings rather than the fuselage as they will break off fairly quickly from a Japanese 20mm hit (several hits are required).

Regardless of bomber you need to have angle. The idea is to not be hit at all and its quite doable with the right sort of angle and speed to your attack....but you need good gunnery skills to pull it off.
