You can see the main step extended in the photo I have added to go with this post. But where is the button that releases the step and where are the other hand- and footholds?

I would also like to know more on how to step in World War II aircraft in general. If you have photos and drawings that illustrate the buttons and footholds, please post them.

You can see a hatch slightly righthand and below the pilot's ellbow (right next to the extra-armor plates).

You'd at first thep onto the ladder, then into the hatch and then into the pit.

..... Earlier this week someone posted a link to a video of a Russian wartime film covering their testing of a captured FW190. The film includes pilot entry from ground to cockpit and shows the release of the drop-down foothold by means of a recessed handle on the side of the fuselage above the wing trailing edge.
