Tried this Russian program and it's fantastic.

What Is It?
It is a view enhancement that uses the integrated TrackIR support in FB/IL2. You do NOT need TrackIR. This is a software solution for smooth scrolling with the hat.

The flying view seems more realistic to me, since you automatically look in the direction that you're maneouvering in, instead of looking straight ahead all the time. Imagine driving a car without moving your head at all.

You can scroll smoothly with the hat, snap to your instrument panel, snap back to center view and program a whole lot of other views. All of the speed settings are adjustable.

Get the English version here:

http://home.iprimus.com.au/djgwen/fb/newviewv26english.zip

Installation:
Read the ReadMe and integrated HELP.

NOTES:
If your hat doesn't work, change the POV No. Setting in the Joystick tab in the NewView CONFIG.EXE until the movement is registered in the POV Check field on the right!

If you are using MY CONFIG and don't like my button assignments, find them and change them to your own. Generally you want to AVOID conflicts by not setting the same keys in NewView AND Forgotten Battles (Controls)! But not always (see below)!

MY Current Config (not NewView default):
ALT = Instrument view with return (to previous view)
F12 = Turn off/on view movement (joystick binding)
SPACE = Accelerate Hat movements
F11 = 360 degree pan

Joy3 = Snap center (also assigned as SNAP FORWARD for Padlock in Forgotten Battles)
Joy5 = No movement while pressed
Joy6 = Return with pan while held

NOTE: I have reduced the head movement associated with the joystick. Increase it in the Additional Settings Tab (Last two settings!). Default NewView is 0.1. If you want NO MOVEMENT (like original IL2/FB) set this to ZERO.

More settings here:
http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view.asp?name=us_il2sturmovik_gd&id=yzimk

Plus these new explanations:

Button Generator

The Button Generator is used to generate a key code when you press the hat so that it looks like you pressed this key on the keyboard. To use the Button Generator, you must assign a key to the "Block POV, with NumPad Key" function in the "Button Generator" group in the list of functions on the Buttons tab. Calling this function blocks the hat view mode and your hat starts to work in push-button mode. By default, the NumPad1, NumPad2....NumPad8 keys are generated for the corresponding hat positions. To replace the default keys assigned to the hat, select one of the hat key positions and then press "Scan Key" followed by the key you want to use.
The Button Generator is also called when you press "Toggle View Mode" or F2 and F8 if the "Alternate Mode for F2,F8" option is on.

In the Button Generator tab, you can also assign the keys that will be sent for the "Press - KGen1(Del), Release - KGen2(PgDn)" function. The default setting for this function is to send the Delete key to IL-2 when the "Press - KGen1(Del), Release - KGen2(PgDn)" key is pressed and then PageDown when released.

Note: Remember that NewView can generate these buttons at any time while IL-2 is running. Even if you are in another Windows application, pressing the "Press - KGen1(Del), Release - KGen2(PgDn)" button will cause the other keys that you assign in the Button Generator to be generated as well.

All of the hat settings for the Button Generator are located in the [Pov2Key] section of the INI file.

Don't forget to save any changes you make by clicking "Save to INI file". If you have configured everything correctly, IL-2 will receive the generated keystrokes.

Toggle View Mode

After you install NewView, the NewView viewing system is used in IL-2 by default. The "Toggle View Mode" function turns NewView off and automatically and automatically activates the TIP1 view mode in IL-2. Pressing this button again generates an F9 and switches the view mode to TIP2 in IL-2. To return to NewView mode, you must press the "Toggle View Mode" button a third time.

Note: In order for all view modes (TIP1, IP2, NewView) to work properly, you must:

1. Assign a button to the "Toggle View Mode" function in NewView;

2. Make sure that the F9 key is assigned to the Toggle Snap/Pan View command in the Controls section of IL-2;

3. Assign the NumPad1.....NumPad9 keys to the view options in both the Snap View and Pan View sections of the IL-2 Control settings.

In the IL-2 Controls section, you can assign the keys to other useful functions then in two out of three modes, the keys are simply pressed and the third mode is NewView.

Note: For panning to work in the two standard IL-2 view modes, you must Press the "Bind Joystick to Views" button to disable NewView joystick binding while in the IL-2 view modes. Otherwise the two view systems will conflict.

Edit: Check6 are hosting an older version of Newview. The newest version seems to be build 25 and it can be downloaded from:

http://www.sh.zp.ua/il2/il2_newview.zip

Assuming you're not a russian speaker, you'll also want to get the English GUI, which can be downloaded from:

Here. (http://home.iprimus.com.au/djgwen/fb/englishconfig_v25.zip)

The english GUI [one single file called config.exe] must be extracted to overwrite the russian build 25 config.exe.

This hacked english GUI was put together by Andrew over at the SimHQ forums. The readme file that appears below is also his work, and applies to an older version of NewView, but the installation and other instructions can also be used for setting up build 25 of NewView.

If you're new to the thread please endeavour to read through all the posts so far, since the same questions seem to keep coming up.

---

For those wondering, the link to this seems to be http://www.checksix-fr.com/bibliotheque/detail_fichier.php?ID=1194

Link is from their crappy java popups system so if it suddenly stops working, don't blame me :>

Seems an interesting program, and seems to hook into IL2s track-ir support to do what it does, rather than mouse emulation as in joy2key.

The check6 link includes a translation of the readme file, if you haven't or can't get the file from there, here's it is:

Translation of the readme file:

-----------------

To configure do the following:
1. Unzip the archive to some directory.
2. Register the DLL.
3. Make sure that TrackIR support is activated in FB.
4. In FB configuration remove hat switch mappings (Pan section)
5. In FB controls configuration remove CenterView mapping to "NumPad5" (Pan section)
6. Check that the DLL is functioning in FB.
7. Check that hat switch panning is working in-game.
8. If not working, in configuration (config.exe) try a different axis.
9. Tune speed parameters if needed.

Now in detail:
1. Unzip the DLL and Config to some directory. You can either create a new directory
or use an existing directory.
For example we'll assume the directory is: "C:\Program Files\UbiSoft"

2. You'll need the following registry key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\NaturalPoint\NATURALPOI NT\NPClient Location]
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\UbiSoft"

where Path is the directory where the DLL is located.

To do this, start Config.exe from the directory and click the second button (ed. has DLL as part of the button caption)

3. According to the readme of FB to enable TrackIR in FB you must:
Open conf.ini in notepad, and in section [rts] find the line
trackIRUse=0
and change it to
trackIRUse=1

Now you can start FB.

4,5. This is in FB controls configuration, if you don't do this it will hamper proper (TrackIR) operation.

6. At this stage it's good to check if the DLL is operating properly.
Start a QMB mission and when in flight the the "Shift" key.
If the view changes to show the instrument panel, the DLL is working. If no, check the previous steps.

7. Next you have to check the reaction to hat switch movement. If it is proper, proceed to step 9.

8. If hat switch view doesn't work, try changing the axis.
To do this start Config.exe
Move the hat(s) and note which axis (display) reacts to the hat movement.
Note the axis number and write it in the spin-edit control (ed. it's in the lower right corner), then press the Save to INI button (ed. next to the edit control).
Start FB and check proper operation (step 7).

9. In the directory where the DLL resides it creates an INI file (NPClient.ini).
It contains parameters which are used to
Section [Speed]
DynamicMultiplyMin - minimum speed; this is the initial movement speed
DynamicMultiplyMax - maximum speed that is reached when accelerating movement by keeping the hat switch pressed
SpeedX - X axis speed parameter; speed scale; negative values invert the axis
SpeedY - same for Y axis; format: floating point (or comma), ie 1.001
Acsel - acceleration; determines how many times is the current speed increased on each co-ordinate increment
Section [LogFile]
Enabled - enable logging to file (for debug purposes)
Path - fully-qualified path of the log file
Section [Axes]
Hat - the number of the hat axis. Integer values (1 .. 6)

Example:
If movement speed is slow, increase SpeedX and SpeedY.
You can also try changing minimum and maximum speeds (ed. I've reduced DynamicMultiplyMax to 25)

Notes:
If the acceleration is insufficient, the maximum speed may never be reached.
The speed calculation formula is:
PosX = PosX + SpeedX * TC * DynamicMultiply,
where TC is the CPU tick count since the last call

The acceleration calculation formula is:
DynamicMultiply = DynamicMultiply * Acsel

If Acsel=1 there will be no dynamic acceleration (constant-speed).

Purpose of acceleration:
The acceleration allows precise positioning by using inputs with short duration, as well as fast movement.
In two words: fast and precise.

What's new in LAST version
Key mapping.

Functions that can be mapped:
1. Instrument view with return to previous view upon key release
2. Center (gunsight) view, without return to previous view
3. Change of acceleration - when pressed AcselHI acceleration is used; when is not pressed AcselLO is used
4. Speed change * 3 - while key is press speed is tripled
5. Instrument view with return to center (gunsight)
6. Center (gunsight) view with return to previous view upon release
7. Mouse and hat switch on/off (toggles mouse and hat switch processing)
8. Speed change / 3 - while key is pressed speed is reduced 3 times
9. XYtoLog - write coordinates to logfile - needed for user-defined views
10. UView1 with return - user view with return to previous view
Coordinates are stored in the INI file: X1=0 Y1=-1000
11. UView2 with return
12. UView3 without return
13. UView4 without return
14. UView5 with return to center (Gunsight)

ed. User view coordinates are stored in [UView] section

Coordinates:
X=0 Y=0 are the center (gunsight coordinates)

code:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-12300 < X < 12300 -8600 < Y < 5500

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coordinates outside these ranges are truncated to range boundary.

------------

Changes to UI:
1st tab - the register DLL button (to save the location of the DLL to registry)
2nd tab - axes configuration;
1st spin edit - axis number
2nd spin edit - input device number (in case of multiple controllers)
button - save axis and device numbers to INI file

3rd tab - keyboard configuration
To assign a key to an action, select the action from the combo box, the press the
wanted key; the key code is displayed in the spin edit below the combo. Click the
lower button (save to ini file). Repeat for other view actions.

Note: selections form list correspond in order to the view functions listed above (Functions that can be mapped:...)

(ed. minor gripe: this saves only the key itself; can't save modifier+key, ie {Alt}+Key, {Ctrl}+Key, {Shift}+Key)

suppose this is only good for TrackIR users, right?

XyZspineZyX

No. Those with TrackIR won't need this.
This is to give you enhanced features using a hat-switch.

I use mouse emulation for my hat-switch - works fine for me.

As was said, it just uses the functionality of the TrackIR .dll rather than being an addon that uses TrackIR itself.

The interface for the Newview program uses cyrillic characters which are naturally going to look somewhat interesting under west european encoding :>

I found that I had to make sure that all related view keys in the IL2FB program itself were unmapped - both the default hat, and keypad panning controls. Leaving them on made the Newview program stutter and shudder as FBs view system tried to fight for control with the Newview program.

As for trackIR Vs Joy2Key, I haven't really found any major differences in their operation yet - maybe I've missed an option somehow, but I don't find it 'frees' the head axis as the first post in the thread said. Just means I get smooth panning from the hat switch. There seems to be more control over the speed and accelleration [most important] of the view speed - small hat movements mean small view movements, the longer you hold down, the faster it goes, which is nice.

Anyone have any other fun options for this program? I'd love it if it really did make your head 'wobble' a bit more than the current 'head movement' option does in FB, as the first thread post seemed to suggest.

Here is the link to the latest version (2.5). The one on CheckSix is old.

http://sh.zp.ua/il2/ ( <A HREF=)il2_newview.zip" target=_blank>http://sh.zp.ua/il2/il2_newview.zip</a>

What happens is that the view follows your joystick movement - i.e., when you pull up, your view moves up and the cockpit doesn't just stick in the middle of the screen. More realistic in my opinion, since you would normally look in the direction you want to move in. This allows you to follow an enemy a little easier too.

There is a help file here:

http://sh.zp.ua/il2/

But again, it is in Russian. Any translators??

For those of you who can read German, there are some good explanations of options here:

Jetstream100 your link doesn't work.

I tried the old NewView program, and I got the DLL working. As when I press shift I get the instrument panel.
However it doesn't pan when I turn my hat switch is still working though, and when I let go of the shift key it immediately looks straight up.

Bump for this - it's a great program. The old version at Check6 doesn't have joystick axis guided viewpoint movement, but the 2.5 version linked above does.

I did some browsing around, unfortunately google doesn't know a lot about the program.

I know there are several russian speakers on the forum so if one of them could possibly attempt a translation of the new 2.5 readme file I'd love you long time.

^ seems to be the latest newview

^ babelfish translation of the page I got these from. God babel sucks at translating russian, it's just painful. Best mangling I found while browsing, on track file downloads:

In this division we will place the tracks of the game Of il2 attack aircraft. Those, who never heard about this game, can boldly harvest button "to shut". We resemble to all rest that skachav the file of track you must unpack file from the archive into folder Records, only after this you can lose it.

Anyhow, just giving this a bump. I'm off to boldly harvest the button "to shut" so I can lose it.

Unfortunately I can't point babelfish at the german forum so any insights there are lost to me also.

There is indeed an english translation of the program interface - most of it anyway. D13-th_Hamm109 emailed me this translation, which is the work of Andrew from SimHQ's forums. The translation I posted above in the second message turns out to also have been the work of Andrew. I emailed Andrew but I still haven't gotten a reply - told him about the existence of this thread and asked if it's OK to host his translation anywhere, but I haven't heard back as yet.

The translation works, but without also having a translation of the readme.txt and help .hlp file, it's still a fair bit of trial and error to configure it all. That the options are now in english is good, but I still don't know what some of them are supposed to do exactly :>

What I'd really love is if someone could tell me how to change the following things:

Panning the FOV with the hat switch outside the aircraft seems to have been disabled somehow on my box. This used to work with Newview and buggered if I know how I turned it off. When it did work, there was about a 30 degree zone where the FOV refused to 'wrap around' at all - unlike mouse control, I couldn't do a full 360 around an object. This wasn't along the 12/6 o'clock line as it is with the standard FB hat view controls, where you can't endlessly wrap around the nose of an aircraft. This is different, and it just seems to be some arbitrary limit where you just can't move the camera past on either side for a good 30 degrees or so. I'm guessing this is to do with the way it emulates trackIR and the fix Oleg put in for the Linda Blair in cockpit view cheat, but is there any way to get hat view panning from externals to work properly without the no-go zone?

The head motion in Newview is great - you look further along towards the direction you're moving the joystick in, which is great for most things, except low level strafing runs. Most of the time in the most zoomed in view, I end up with the gunsight halfway off screen. Is there any way to limit the maximum off-angle in Newview, or disable the 'head tracking' via stick motion somehow? I can get it to turn off mouse and hat panning entirely via button press, but this doesn't stop the auto-head movement that follows your stick movements. I want to be able to lock the camera in place for accurate shooting. Does anyone know how to do this?

The following threads come up if you search for 'newview' over at SimHQ's FB forum if you're looking for any more info or history on it, but it seems there hasn't been any discussion on it for a few weeks now:

Hooray!
Huge "props" (bad pun) to JetStream and all those that contributed help to this topic. This add-on is sweet! Just wanted to give tanx for getting to people's attention and saving me $122+ for a TrackIR system (which I was seriuously considering...just couldn't come up with a good excuse to tell the wifey)
Now I can pan around smooth with the hat switch and keep my eye on the prize...I just gotta keep from being on the receiving end!
Anymore help on fine tuning this program would be much appreciated.
Thanks again. Salute.

Didn't want to shell out over 150 bucks for TrackIR here in Europe either.

What I have found to help ***A LOT*** is to map the same key on your joystick for return to Center View (default Num5 in NiewView) to JoyStick 3 **AND** the Num INS key for padlock snapforward view in IL2 FB (Controls).

The settings for this in NiewView can be found in the 3rd Tab (Tab 3.2) in the Second Group of the list. It is the second option. Change the setting at the top right of the dialog box. Select the second button (Joystick) and then choose the Joystick key number from the popup list.

I also switched the default instrument panel view (SHIFT) to ALT, since I use this less and it tends to interfere with other modifiers otherwise. This is the first option in the Second Group in the list.

This lets you use the same button near your thumb for snapping forward (either in Padlock) or when you are in NiewView flying and scrolling around with the hat.

I have also mapped my padlock (F4) to Joy4 in FB (Controls) so that I can move around with the hat, snapforward, and padlock at anytime with my thumb without getting distracted.

Disclaimer - I'm still a terrible pilot, but hey, hopefully this may improve my chances of not getting killed on line ;-)

I press and hold Joy2 (Snapforward/Return to Center) when I am shooting as well so there is no motion from NewView.

Good luck to all and happy hunting (as long as it's not me) ;-)

JetStream100 or anyone else with working smooth pan:

Could you please copy the text from your NPClient.ini, that´s the one newview creates here so thick skulled people like me can see what changes are in your ini or maybe copy for ourselves.

Maybe a good way to get started...

Thanks in advance,

bump:

Jetstream100 and clint-ruin, please copy text from NPClient.ini.

I've had New View for some time but never had the currage to try it out.

What files should I back-up in case I run into problems and wish to revert back to FB settings?

Thanks,

Would be nice IF this could be built into the next patch of
FB. Automate the install process and they would have a real
compliment or improvement to the current view system.

Oleg already has half the work done for him since the
program is in Russian.

As it stands now, all the tinkering looks a little too complex for the average user.

It really is a nice little program; I have the same problem though on external views not panning the full 360% using hat, but was enough to have the more natural pan in cockpit, I'd posted here a couple months ago about newview! You can still find it, but had no response? Was glade to pass on the English file in the same way I got it. If all you want is mouse to hat it's pretty simple to use, just fallow the above instruction posted by Jetstream 100 and your good to go, if you have a problem just return to default settings in FB and start again " Salute "

Please forgive me if I didn't get this. Is there a way to use the hat switch on the joystick to do EXACTLY what the mouse does in terms of moving the pilots head? Right now I can only use the hat switch to move the pilots head in sections or if I hit F9 to toggle I can move the pilots head but it's too fast and it moves the pilots head completely to one side and then when you let go of the switch it moves the head back to center again. Thanks in advance!

I've been using it for the last 3 or 4 month and i think it's the best alternative to Trackir and Mouse.

I always wondered why i could not get "degree by degree" movements with my switch until one day, i was browsing the file section of some site and saw "newview".

For the others. It's easy to setup if you follow the instructions carefully. And you need to unbind ALL the commands assigned to your hatswitch.

Tip: i assigned a button on top of my stick that emulate the Num-5 key on the pad. (restore center view) to use with this program.

I assume that this program emulate the TrackIr input but with your switch through the DLL since you have to use the "TrackIr = on" option in the config file. ? Am i correct?

Do you happen to know if a deadzone can be made for the glance view so that it´s a bit easier to shoot?
So that if I only move the stick a few degrees nothing much changes and if I give full stick I get the glance ahead?

Even if not, I can keep my targets in view much better now.

Thanks a bunch.

Hope to be able to return the favour somehow /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Sounds like a great little program to help non-TIR users to stop whining about TIR and start enjoying a freer viewing system! And without dropping a buttload of cash like I did, although the real thing has paid me back ten-fold and no fuss with centering or extra buttons.

If my TIR broke tomorrow you could bet I'd be using NewView until my second one arrived!

Have fun!

There is an english user interface, but it's not hosted anywhere yet that I know of. It was hacked and put together by Andrew on the SimHQ boards. I'm still awaiting any word from Andrew as to whether it can be put up anywhere yet.

Without the full documentation as to what the options do specifically it's still not entirely easy to use, though.

There are a links to his posts on the SimHQ boards back on page 1.

If you need the hacked english translation please PM me. You will need to download the russian language build 25 version first, then overwrite the file config.exe with the english language version after you've obtained it. I've edited a link in to the russian build 25 in the second message in the thread.

For those playing with the various options for Newview, note that deleting the programs .ini file will make it re-generate a new one from scratch, if you're worried you've buggered it up.

You'd have to fiddle with the settings some more. I simply mapped the snapforward (Center view) to Joy3 which I press before/during firing. Crude but effective.

D13th-Hamm has an English version of the onscreen options. The help screens are still in Russian, but at least it's easier to fiddle with. PM him.

NOTE: The restriction in external view (no full 360 degree rotate) is to avoid cheats with TrackIR, I believe, and was added recently by Oleg and Co.

IMPORTANT: Make sure all hat assignments in the in-game settings (Controls) are removed so there are no conflicts with NewView.

Everyone, please keep us informed about any settings and features you may discover as you go.

I'm working on some basic help screenshots for this program at the moment, nothing special but hopefully enough to answer some simple questions people keep emailing me with. I just gave myself a seriously nasty stove burn and it's hard to reach alt-printscreen with one hand :> .. so maybe something tomorrow.

As a PS, if anyone else would like the program mailed to them, you might want to seriously consider the use of personal messages ['no messages' text at the top right hand side of the forum screen] rather than leaving your email address in the thread. Putting your email address in a public forum is a sure way to get yourself signed on for spam email lists.

Speaking of cheap alternatives to TrackIR, anyone owning a cheap USB camera (there are as cheap as 12 USD) should try out MouseVision's Cam2Pan, http://www.mousevision.com , which does a very good job as a TIR alternative.

It's a software with a trial version, and the full version costs 18 USD.. With as little as 30 USD you can get everything.

If you want, I can post 1.11 tracks where I am using it.

Been playing with the NewView..

I'm not configured correctly, but it looks like an excellent add-on to the FB. In fact, it's really exciting.

When you move the stick you're getting more movement and visual. It's smooth and doesn't seem phoney... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I really like the way it feels. I've got a MSFT FF2, so I get some sensations of feeling.

I'm looking forward to a good set of instructions in English...that's sure.

I'd suggest anyone without the bucks for an IRTrack look into this tool = post haste. It will definitely make you more competitive than you are now, if you're not using the IRTrack.

Thanks Hruks, its a good app this. I had it up and running following Clint's instructions in no time.

I have only one issue, I can't get CenterView to work, if I set it in the pan settings then it just jerks the screen, which key should I use?
I have a work around in that I use cockpit view (default F1) to go to looking forward, but would prefer to get it right.

You should completely un-bind any controls in Il2 that relate to moving the point of view. They will 'fight' with the Newview program to move the viewpoint.

You need to experiment with the Newview program itself - the instructions for the old version Andrew translated back on page 1 are fairly good for covering the basics.

I would suggest making sure that you have the correct joystick ID selected in newview's first tab, along with the correct POV hat. The hat should always move your viewpoint if Newview is configured correctly. You should be able to see the raw joystick output numbers change when you move the stick when you have the correct joystick number selected in the newview program.

There is also a setting relating to how many axis the hat has in the .ini file for the newview program.

Sorry if I didn't understand the question :>

Too Much Movement (Centered):
If you are experiencing too much movement while trying to shoot, etc., try modifying your joystick input settings in FB/IL2, especially if you are using the game's default settings.

Reduce the movement assoc. with the joystick (head bobbing):
You can vary the amount of movement by changing the last two settings on tab 4.1 (Additional Settings, Speed) called "Bind to Joystick X/Y". Setting this to ZERO makes NewView function like the original IL2/FB.

Getting the Hat to work in F2 (External):
Uncheck the "Alternate Mode for F2/F8" setting on tab 4.3 (Additional Settings, Miscellaneous). See next item as well.

Getting the mouse to work like in IL2/FB:
Uncheck the "Mouse Control" setting on tab 4.3 (Additional Settings, Miscellaneous). This will stop NewView from messing with your view while you move around on the map.

Setting your own key combinations:
Tab 3.1 (Buttons, Combinations) allows you to configure your keyboard and joysticks (two possible settings) for each view option. These are grouped together according to function.

Making custom views (UView).
The UView group on Tab 3.1 (Buttons, Combinations) allows you to configure your own custom views (x,y coordinates). This is useful for "Check Six" or "Check Mirrors" options.

There are two steps involved (thanks to the German-speaking forum for this info!):

1) Assign a key/joy button for the UView option you want in tab 3.1 (Buttons, Combinations). For example, UView1 (with return) ALT GR (right ALT).

2) Assign the x/y coordinates for the view in tab 4.2 (Additional Settings, UView Coordinates) for your UView#. Postive X = left, negative X = right; positive Y = down, negative Y = up. For Hurricanes and P47, you can look in your mirror and snap back to center view by assigning X=0, Y=-2300 to UView1, for example.

Hi Hruks!

Many thanks for putting the Newview program together :>

I was wondering if you know if it's possible to assign a Newview joystick view function to more than one joysticks buttons? At the moment all I get is a dropdown list of buttons on Joystick 0 to assign a function to - is it possible to make it that I can select a different joysticks buttons?

Also, if it's possible to get the Ugear Helmet settings to be bound to a different axis on a joystick? At the moment the Ugear Helmet view emulator settings only bind to X and Y axis on the device selected in the Ugear tab. Is it possible to assign them to say axis X2 or R1 or similar [rudder/throttle control on another joystick]?

Thanks again

Already sent you a PM about this but just in case anyone else is wondering:

Ugear helmet emulation - I have no idea what a Ugear helmet is exactly. Google doesn't turn anything up for the term that I've seen yet.

What it does do is bind a joystick axis to the view control.

Only the primary X/Y axis of the selected device number will control the view, however.

You have to click the "enable helmet" check button to enable this feature at all. Without it all of the settings on this tab have no effect.

I've been playing with it, and it's very handy in my particular circumstances, but I can't imagine how it would be of help to anyone else.

I have a MS Sidewinder 3d, and a USB Thrustmaster Firebird Analogue 2 gamepad.

MS Sidewinder is device ID 0 as far as Newview is concerned, the Firebird is device 1.

So I can sit the gamepad on my left knee and use the digital pad on its left side to control zoom [left = gunsight, right = wide, up = increase fov, down = decrease fov], and the analogue stick to control where my eyes look.

Since the analogue thumbstick on its left side has very stiff centreing bands, when I release the stick my view returns to dead centre forward.

My question to Hruk was about how one would go about binding this feature to a different joystick axis - say, the other right hand side analogue stick on my TM gamepad. This might be more useful for more people if the axis could be directly chosen.

Also note - the English translation of the Newview interface by Andrew also has a fair amount of the 'mouseover' tooltils translated. If you don't know what a setting does, just leave the mouse pointer motionless over it for a second or two, and help might pop up for the function.

*** Everyone keeps asking me this so I'll put it here as a bigass NB ***

Anyone who wants to 'lock' their view straight through the gunsite should bind a key or stick button to the function "bind to stick axis" under Buttons > Combinations > Control inside Newview. This will turn off your chosen joysticks 'move view with stick motion' setting until you press it again. There's also a setting called "disable mouse or movement" which seems to work in conjuction with this, but I haven't worked out the exact details of it yet.

***

Unfortunately, as I mentioned in the post to Hruk, it does not seem possible at the moment to bind these Buttons tab functions to anything other than the joystick you have chosen to use as the Newview TrackIR emulation device.

Note that you can also bind the same key to more than one function in the Buttons > Combinations panel in Newview, which may or may not be handy for some people.

But, I can still use the TM USB gamepad along with my gameport MS Sidewinder inside FB and bind controls to both. This is strange - I swear I never used to be able to bind things to it in FB's own internal HOTAS control panel, and I thought this issue had come up as a 'bug' before. Anyone know when this might have been fixed?

Clint, I was able to find out that UGEAR is a helmet-type joystick with X/Y axes, headphones and a mike.

Sounds pretty esoteric, since no one here has ever heard of it.

What Input Control settings are you using for your joystick in FB itself (Pitch, Yaw, Roll tables)?

Jet

XyZspineZyX
09-10-2003, 02:25 PM
Hahah, wow. I guess it must be more popular on continental russia ;>

I've never had any great need to modify my stick sensitivity axis inside FB. I use the default settings, but with each aileron and pitch setting clicked down by 4 points [10=6, 20=16, .. 90=86] and it does me just fine.

In the Ugear Newview tab, the 'smooth' 'abrupt' etc settings, and the manual inputs for them, work exactly as the HOTAS sensitivity settings do in FB. There are options as to how smooth or fast the view panning should be, and the maximum deflection limit too, which is handy.

If it's of any interest to anyone [say, using the same TM Gamepad as me], whatever device ID you have selected as your Ugear helmet emulator will fight with your POV hat to a certain extent. But it's not as painful as it is inside FB if you have FB set to do view panning via a hat as well as Newview. If I just leave the TM gamepad at centre position it doesn't produce any major problems, but if it wiggles I get major jumps and jerks in the way Newviews stick motion controlled viewpoint movement works.

There's also a command function in Newviews button tab to "Disable POV" which might be useful if you're playing with these functions. Just disables the POV hat from working entirely and leaves all control of viewpoint to Ugear emulation + stick motion controlled view movement.

Damn we need to develop some abbreviations for using this thing coz my hands are going to fall off if I have to keep typing out SMCVM :>

Edit: I'm going to be out for a while, and I still haven't heard from Andrew, and people keep mailing me about it, so here's a direct download link to Andrews english translation of the english hacked config.exe. If you run into problems getting it let me know, but if people PM or email me asking for the file I'll point 'em..

Here. (http://home.iprimus.com.au/djgwen/fb/englishconfig_v25.zip)

Note that as stated before, you'll need to also obtain Newview build 25, then overwrite config.exe with the english version.

D13-th_Hamm109 sent me a partially finished GUI of the program in English. There is no readme, or instructions. This GUI overwrites the 2.5 NewView, which I downloaded.

There are some complex issues associated with this add-on, so I agree we need some pretty good instructions.

I've got mine working, but to be honest it's still not correct. I've got it working well enough to know I really want to use this tool.

.exe file is the interface of the program. I mean: the options of the program once you have it opened and working on it.

THANKS a lot in advance for your extremely useful translation of the readme and (hope) the program interface.

Hi Maxim26,

Thankyou so much for helping out with this :>

I was wondering if you have the time, if perhaps you might also like to have a go at translating the contents of this file:

http://www.sh.zp.ua/il2/nvhelp_v1.0.rar

It's a windows .hlp file and not particularly easy to edit on its own, but if you're able to type it out into a .txt file as you read and translate it I don't think anyone could complain. I don't know specifically what's in there, but there seems to be more text inside that file than there is in the NewView readme files.

PS: I'm trying to keep information on NewView somewhat current by editing the second post of this thread, and a download link to the "hacked" English NewView GUI that Andrew from SimHQ made is now available there as well.

Maxim,

It would be a big help if you could try and translate the Help screens (they are not translated in the English GUI) and/or the help file that is available in Russian here:

http://www.sh.zp.ua/il2/ ( <A HREF=)nvhelp_v1.0.rar" target=_blank>http://www.sh.zp.ua/il2/nvhelp_v1.0.rar</a>

And the general page may be of interest to you for other IL2 related stuff:

Maxim,

Most exe files include resources that can be translated (localized) into other languages. If the programmer isolates these texts outside the code itself, they can be changed without messing with the executable.

Guys. I downloaded Newview files and tried to open it. Instead of cyrillic I got just a bunch of signs. Obviously problem with encoding. I tried to open files with Unicode and all other available types of encoding and it didn't help. If anybody knows the encoding used in these files and any way for me to get the text in cyrillic will appreciate the help.

Translation is not a problem. Russian is my native language and Readme file is not too big.

I believe it uses Koi-8R encoding.

I spent about 4 hours looking into how the hell I could translate it using existing online translators, before someone showed me what Andrew had done over at SimHQ.

There are various programs that can copy what gets turned into just high ascii under west euro fonts and paste it so that it comes out as koi-8r encoding.

The following URLs might be handy:

http://www.translate.ru & http://www.translate.ru./ruscode.asp?lang=en

^ These guys have various software that performs digital translation, and they also have the only thing I was able to find as an online-web form that could understand mutated high ascii gibberish and convert it into russian characters. The second URL is their cyrillic character converter. If I copied and pasted the gibberish in the NewView readmes from Notepad into the text box on their converter, then selected "Windows 1251 to quoted printable", then selected "Quoted printable to Windows 1251", it turns the gibberish into readable cyrillic.

http://russiantext.narod.ru/nppE.htm

^ Version of notepad that supports cyrillic fonts and seems to also convert between KOI8r and Windows 1251. But I can't get the "real" readable cyrillic output of the online translator I mentioned above to paste into it properly.

I'm no expert at this so by all means if anyone else knows more about encoding conversion please chip in :>

**Edit

Boy I'm stupid. Forgot I could use my own web space to translate this through standard translators. Whoops. When they mention that Effexor XR might possibly have side effects I think this is what they mean :>

Version 2.5
English GUI

-Button configurations are hellish to set-up/save. Most save OK using my spacebar (code 32), but hardly any other keys work from the GUI. I have to save a bind using spacebar first, open ini, check which 'key' listing the command is, use the GUI to find out which code I actually want to use, and then edit the ini manually. Is everyone having this problem?

-The 'Viewpoint lock emulation' 'key' doesn't seem to exist. It sounds like a sort of 'padlock' feature that keeps your gaze in the direction you were looking in(?); that would be very cool to have... can it be binded?? How?

-What does the button generator do?

-Is it possible to bind NewView functions to buttons on a second joystick controller?

Cosmetically FB feels nicer; the pilot's head isn't nailed to the seat anymore. Great program. But with a little more work it could be really useful instead of just mostly cosmetic!

Dear Hruks:

Thank-you very much for the New View program and I hope you'll pass on my thanks to your colleagues.

Thanks also to the folks bringing this to the IL2 board and for the instructions.

I have it working on my system. On the joystick tab, my hat did not show up in an axis but when I changed the POV pulldown to POV 1 my hat would change the little black dot in the hat animation at the top right and worked fine in IL2 FB.

This adds a new dimension. Cool!

XyZspineZyX

PROBLEM

The hat function seems to disappear after I finished my first quick mission and it won't come back unless I quit the game and restart. The head-bobbing effect still continues though.

Bind to Views - when you press whatever you've got this bound to, it should stop and cease all trackIR emulation. Which should hopefully result in you looking dead forward with no trackIR motion, until you press that button/key again.

edit: It would probably help more if I could get the name of the function right even when it's staring me in the face :>

--Is it possible to bind NewView functions to buttons on a second joystick controller?

Not as far as I know - only the device you have set as the TrackIR view emulation device gets its buttons added in, and the config.ini doesn't seem to allow you to set a different stick to do it. Hruk seems to have posted something about how to do it but I don't understand what he said :<

Thanks. So 'bind joystick to views' toggles NewView on and off during the game. Great info!

But what I really wanted to know about was the 'viewpoint lock' (we can see it in your jpg at the link above). It can't be bound to anything other than 'Lbutton', and is not listed in the ini file. It sounds interestingly like some sort of padlock feature. Is it usable? What does it do?

Anyone found out?

How do you unbind ALL the commands assigned to your hatswitch. I cannot seem to do it in the HOTAS config in IL2-FB...or at least I can't find a key that will eliminate all entries for each POV keystroke.

I've got it working, but the Hatswitch is useless and I can't get the thing to snap back front and center to shoot.

Note that if you have software for your second joystick that can emulate keypresses, it would be so, so easy to set Newviews functions to be bound to a keyboard key, then set the button in the joystick software to do that keypress.

The View Lock Emulation In Full Real mode allows me to choose keys/mouse buttons to bind it to in the list - I assume you could just manually plug in a key code for it if it didn't. Is the problem more that you can't chose any other key than LMB or is the problem that when you do, it doesn't work? I have no idea what it's supposed to do, myself.

Nearmiss:

You can literally just delete any entries that refer to it [views/POV hat] in the settings.ini file for your FB user profile. The default is x:\fbdirectory\users\doe\settings.ini

Inside FB itself, when I can't be bothered reloading, I just bind right-mouse or another key to the function I want to delete and do it twice, then move down the list binding RMB twice again - if that makes sense. Give it a try.

Just a quick edit here - if you're experiencing any problems with your POV hat not doing anything to move your POV around in the cockpit, try switching to an external view, then switching back to the cockpit again. This happens to me so often now that it's second nature for me to switch to an external before I try and suss out anything in the program, anymore.

Another edit: Did I mention I'm a big dummy? :>

"Bind Joystick to Views" key/button function will cease TrackIR emulation when pressed and resume when pressed again.

It will not centre your view for you as well.

You can use your POV hat to move the view around as normal, while Bind Joystick To Views has been pressed.

If you want your view to be instantly centred, you can use the function "Centre Without Return" under the Buttons > Combinations > Centering section.

The good thing about NewView is that you can have two different functions bound to the same button [as well as the same function bound to two different buttons if you like].

So if you want a control that will instantly centre your view through the gunsight, and turn off the TrackIR head movement, bind the same button or key to both Bind Joystick to Views and Center Without Return.

There should be some way to make this work so that it'll perform view locking and centre whenever you press your trigger to fire, but I'm still working on that one :>

I would like to try manually, but (unlike all the other commands) I can't even get it to make an initial entry in the ini file to see what 'key' entry it is, Eg:
Key31=0
Key2_31=0
JKey31=-1
JKey2_31=-1

If you could tell me which key entry it binds to, I would be very grateful.

> Is the problem more that you can't chose any other key than

I can change it in the GUI, but it doesn't affect the ini file in anyway. There is no key entry that has LMB (code 1). I also tried spacebar (code 32) as that works with all the other functions, but it didn't show that in the ini either.

Maxim,

To view the Russian on an English system,

Control Panel -> Date, Time, Language and Regional Options

Select Regional and Language Options

- In the Languages tab select "Russian"
- In the Advanced tab select "Russian" under Language for non-Unicode programs.

You may have to restart.

This will display the cyrillic characters. If you have any problems, just make sure the Cyrillic Code page conversion tables are ON in the Advanced tab.

I think Hruks really meant in his post that this was a "joke" - a red herring.

I couldn't get it to bind and LBUTTON (=1) doesn't exist in the INI file either.

Hi guys. I just finished translation of on of the text files. I couldn't read the name of the file. Some editing is needed by English native speaker.

To install add-on it is necessary to do following:
1. To unzip dll and Config files.
2. To make sure that TrackIR is activated.
3. To make the POV and buttons settings and to register dll.
4. To disable the hatswitch in the game settings.
5. To disable the "Num5" view centering.
6. To check the connection of the dll in the game.
7. To check the hatswitch controls in the game.
8. To adjust the sensitivity if needed.

Detailed description:
1. To unzip dll and Config files.
Create new folder or use existing one, for example, "C:\Program Files\UBI Soft"
2. To activate TrackIR function in the game open conf.ini file in "Forgotten Battles" folder with the Notepad. Find the line
trackIRUse=0
in the [rts] section
and substitute it with the line
trackIRUse=1
If you didn't change this parameter before you can skip this stage because TrackIR is activated by default.
3. Run Config.exe file, which has to be in one directory with dll file and hit "Register dll" button.
Using Config.exe make Device and POV adjustments.
Now you can start IL2:FB
4,5 These changes have to be done in the game itself.
6. On this stage you have to check whether dll is connected or not. To do this start the game in Quick Mission Builder and use new controls in the flight.
7. After this you have to check hatswitch control.
8. After execution dll file creates NPClient.ini file. This file contains controls settings, which can be adjusted. You can also adjust controls parameters using Config.exe.

Section [LogFile]
Enabled - enables protocol file (needed for some adjustments)
Path - protocol file path

Section [Axes]
Hat - hatswithch number. Can be integral numbers only: 1,2. 4
Example: If the sensitivity is too small, than you can increase SpeedX and SpeedY parameters.
You can also try minimum and maximum sensitivity. Maximum sensitivity can't be reached if the stick is moved with low acceleration.
Formula for sensitivity calculations:
= PosX + SpeedX * TC * DynamicMultiply, where TC is processor clock counter from the moment of last call.
Formula for acceleration calculations:
DynamicMultiply = DynamicMultiply * Acsel
Example:
If Acsel parameter will be preset as 1, than movement would be without acceleration.

Acceleration is needed to position you view precisely with the short and sharp movements.

Hi Maxim,

That's definitely the readme file.

Could you have a look at this file

http://sh.zp.ua/il2/nvhelp_v1.0.rar

It is a help file/manual that would be a good thing to have.

Please get in touch with Hruks and Azezz as well via PM. They need some help with the program text.

I've just sent you a private message with contact details for proofing/review.

Really need to let mudmovers.com put this up for Download. I'm pretty sure they'd be glad to host it.

We just need a final set of docs, a pretty good FAQ created from the postings and a final on the program.

This is one heck of a good add-on. I can imagine how excited everyone would have been if 1C:Maddox had put this out with IL2-FB.

Maybe one of you guys can help me with this.

I can't get the Hat switch to work now, and I cannot find an option in Combinations or Uview to bind the Hatswitch positions to the view directions.
My POV No. in the Joystick Tab DOES register in the POV Check field.

I read these quotes and it seems like the Hat should work:

"This is a software solution for smooth scrolling with the hat."

"You can scroll smoothly with the hat,"

Thanks for any help. Otherwise I really like this program.

I have not tried this program yet ( I will ) but you say you like it except for the hat not working ?

What is it doing - I mean does it do something without the hat switch being involved ?

OK. I outsmarted it!

I had to uncheck "Bind view to joystick on startup" in Additional Settings/Misc

then bound Joystick button 7 in Buttons/Combination/Control/Bind joystick to views

1. tick Keyboard or Joystick in right column
2. Choose keycode or button
3. Save buttons to INI file

Now when the game starts up I have Hatswitch views til I hit Joystick Button 7 (on the stick base) then I have NewView which is like leaning into flight direction instead of flying thru the gunsight.

ALL IN ALL A VAST IMPROVEMENT!!!

Good work Hruks FB=Aleez

Please explane /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif to me - does this newview automatically pan with your turn or do you have to push the hat in the direction of your turn (because if it requires pushing the hat to slowly pan,, my latest joystick software now does that)

Thanks Much, Art /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

The way mine is now with NV OFF, the hat pans normally.

With NV ON you don't have to push the hat in the direction of your turn.
You just turn & get a bigger NewView, like if you learned closer to the glass to see that bogey you're tryin to come around on.

After a few seconds of this, I have to snap to center view to overcome a definite feeling of vertigo

I still have yet to hear definately whether you can have NV and hatswitch panning at the same time. For now I guess it's a novelty option that I'm not sure I would use in online dogfights.

I'm trying out the NewView program and have a problem setting it up..My hat switch does fine panning the view when in the cockpit and the view follows the joystick movement as I turn,,But in the exterior view the view also rotates in the direction I'm moving the joystick,,This seems like some kind of conflict in the axis because it feels like the turning rate is slowed down a lot...I've adjusted the rate for the panning view manually in the npclient file to slow the pan rate for the hat switch.
I think you can map a joystick button to keypad 5 to return to center view but is this a press and hold thing where you must hold the button to stay in the center view for firing,,Using a Saitek X-45 stick,,Any help is appreciated

You should have both functions at all times if you set things up properly, without having to bind/unbind.

Check the POV setting in the Joystick tab (pop-up list). Mine is POV1, for example. Don't forget to press APPLY/Save Changes button!!

Here is the installation part of the readme from Maxim with additions and corrections added by me. Please take the time to read it!

-----
NewView 25 - Readme

To install NewView do the following:

1. Unzip the NewView DLL and Config file
Unzip the DLL and Config file to any directory. You can create a new folder or use an existing one. Here we will assume that you use "C:\Program Files\ Ubi Soft\". Note: the CONFIG.EXE file must always be in the same directory as the DLL file.

2. Activate TrackIR support in IL2FB.
To activate TrackIR support, open the conf.ini file in your "Forgotten Battles" folder ("C:\Program Files\ Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles") with the Notepad. Find the line in the [rts] section that says:
trackIRUse=0
and change it to
trackIRUse=1

Note: TrackIR is activated by default in IL2FB, so if you haven't changed this setting you can skip this step.

3. Register the DLL file.
To add the DLL file to your registry, run Config.exe. Click the "Register the DLL" button on the Installation tab.

4. Assign the POV (HAT) and button settings.
Go to the Joystick tab in Config.EXE and assign your input device (Device No.) and hat switch (POV No.). You can tell if you have done this correctly by moving your joystick and hat switch to see if the onscreen display changes. Hat movement is displayed in the POV Check area to the right. Press Apply to save your settings. Close Config.EXE.

Steps 5 and 6 have to be done in the game, so start IL2FB.
5. Disable all hat switch buttons in the IL2FB Control settings.
Open the Controls page in IL2FB. REMOVE all HAT assignments that appear in the Controls. You do this by assigning another command. The easiest way to do this is to press the left mouse button in each one until the key assignment reads LEFT MOUSE only. Continue doing this in each view command in the PAN and SNAP VIEW sections until they are all blank. When you are finished, reassign LEFT MOUSE to your GUNNER FIRE Control.

6. Disable "Num5" as the view centering key in the IL2FB Control settings.
Follow the steps in step 5 to remove this key from the in-game settings. If you don't you will cause conflicts between NewView and IL2FB. Exit the Control settings by clicking Apply.

7. Verify that the DLL is working in the game.
To see whether NewView is working, start a Quick Mission and press the SHIFT key during your flight. The view should pan down to your instrument panel and then return when you release the SHIFT key. If the view doesn't change, repeat steps 1 to 6 again.

8. Check that the hat switch controls work in IL2FB.
Move your hat switch to see if your view pans correctly. If it doesn't, you haven't done step 4 or 5 (or both) correctly. Usually you will have forgotten to remove a hat switch assignment in IL2FB or you didn't select the correct device or POV No. in step 4.

9. Adjust the sensitivity and other parameters if needed.
The first time you use NewView, it creates a configuration file called NPClient.ini. This file contains the control settings. You adjust the control parameters in Config.exe. Note: if you screw up your settings, just delete the NPClient.ini file. NewView will create a new file with the default settings.

I've got it working pretty well...

We sure need an FAQ or instructions how to effectively use this tool.

Maybe we need to encourage the developers to put up some good information or maybe we just need some posters to comment on using it. I'll be honest it's working, but at the rate I'm going I could be a week figuring this thing out.

Example..

When I'm ready to target and shoot. I'd like to be able to drop out of NearView and get good target fixes without having to hold down a button. When I'm through shooting I could then flick a button to go back into nearview again.

I don't mind if the Nearview is on when I start a mission. I'd just like to be able to front and center with the gunsight quickly, disabling the nearview while shooting.

I think I've solved it...but I'm not quite sure. The reason I'm not sure is because I'm using a button on my joystick to toggle it. The MSFT FF2 stick buttons are quirky at times... LOL

Thank you to for taking the time to post a reply..
The program works great in the cockpit pan view and NewView,,I've printed out you instructions and followed them to the letter and got that far
It's the rotating of the external view thats hard to take,,I needed to find a way to turn it off when I go to an outside view,,
Think i've found a couple of ways to do that,,Trying a few things later saving the npclient file in between so I can back up if I make an error,,
I do like the program it expands my FOV when turning like It would if I turned my head to follow something..
Thank you for the help

Are hat snaps possible with NewView?

What sections should I modify in the Config.exe to restore Hatswitch snap views?

Not sure what you mean by the rotating external views, but what I have done is to disable the following settings in the Advanced Settings_>Miscellaneous tab:

Mouse Control (OFF)
Alternate Mode for F2/F8 (OFF)

If you DON'T like the head bobbing (and want the fixed, original IL2 cockpit view) ALWAYS then set

"Bind View to joystick on startup" to OFF

If you like the head bobbing, but would like to turn it off at times:

Buttons, Combinations tab, set "Bind joystick to views" (Control group) to a key, say F12. Pressing F12 will then enable and disable head bobbing with joystick.

If you like the head bobbing, but it's just too much, reduce the values in Additional Settings, Speed tab under "Bind to primary joystick quot. X/Y". A value of zero is equivalent to OFF (original IL2).

For quick gunsight view, I assigned "Center without return" key to Joybutton 3.

Someone please tell me what the whole real benefit is for newview really?

I hear people saying that they wondered why the game only let you use sudden hat switch movements in-game etc.

But all I thought u needed to do was hit one of the function keys, around somewhere f7-f12 cant remember which it was, and you get degree by degree movement just like a mouse.

seems to work fine for me..

Otherwise feel free to tell me what the huge difference is between my way and the newview way ?

Clint- this is great stuff. I have installed it as per instructions and its way cool. Only one bug was in open cockpit experiment while on a LAN connection with my son. Everything fine - and then only some/part of the POV hat switch would work. Switched back to full cockpit and no problem. Same experiment online with no problems. Conflict somewhere but damned if I know where. Anway more experimenting to come ( I would like to increase the amount of deflection i.e.the harder I pull in a turn the further around)- thanks again.
